"1 am slightly miffed. When discussing herbaceous flower beds the only type of plants you talk about are annuals. As an avid gardener, I feel that you have an obligation to delve into the more permanent and just as attractive perennial and biennial species. After all, who wants to devote prolonged periods of time every year sticking in marigolds, petunias, ageratum, zinnias, etc. when, by using perennials and self sowing biennials, the entire, somewhat tiresome, planting operation need only be dont^ once. "Maybe I am a little bit of a snob in this area, but to my mind the use of annuals shows a distinct lack of imagination Anybody can create a long lasting splash of color with snapdragons, sweet alyssum, begonias, and portulaca. Good grief, all one need do is follow the ^directions on the seed packets and success is a forgone conclusion. (Although. I am always amazed at the number of 'gardeners' - I use the word in its loosest sense - who are unable to rhise these peons of the plant world. Ah, but to map out a good perennial garden, now that requires skill "Because of the desired permanency of the garden, initially a great deal of thought and preparation must go into soil conditions, exposure, and air circulation. Although the choice of perennials and biennials is as large, if not larger than that of annuals, the selection process is complicated by sequence of bloom. As you have stated in earlier columns, annuals, with rare exceptions, bloom from June through frost. Perennials and biennials, on the other hand, have relatively restricted periods in which they flower. Thus, in order to be sure of a respectable show at all times a considerable amount of research must be undertaken before specific decisions can be made. "In closing, I would just like to say that by sidestepping the subject of perennials and biennials you are doing the gardeners of McHenry county a grave disservice. Over the long haul, these plants are not only cheaper, but require far less maintenance." Before taking issue with some of the points you made in your letter dear gardener let me state, in no uncertain terms, that this column had been designated for a discussion of perennials several months ago. Your communication simply provided me with an ideal way to begin the article. of WILD 46% ACRES On spring fed bass lake located 10 miles west of Park Falls, Wisconsin, approxi mate ly 1/4 mi le lake frontage, excellent hunting $40,000 ARNIE STUEBER SR. 497 6th Ave. South Park Falls, Wise. 54552 Home Phone 715-762-3602 Office 715-762-3773 7-26 8-16 TF2 HAPPINESS IS: FINDING WHAT YOU WANT IN THE PLAINDEALER'S CLASSIFIED WANT! When it had finished blooming, Mrs. Breier put it outside and continued to care for the plant. AH of the attention she gave theEaster lily had paid off in thirteen blooms compared to five when thev received the plant. STAFF PHOTO By Matthew S. Rosen Instructor Ornamental Horticulture McHenry County College In 1890, the State Massachusetts appropriated $25,000 with the hope of exterminating the gypsy moth. Paying the whopping salary of $1.50 per day, hundreds of young men and boys were hired by the Control board to tromp through the woods collecting and burning egg masses. Every plant in and around Medford, Mass., was sprayed with a variety of amazingly bizarre materials. Paris green, an arsenic based compound, was the most popular and effective against the caterpillars. As a precautionary measure, trees aijd shrub^n the late tyhiter, - *«arly Marw i th all types of strange concoctions in the hope of smothering undetected egg masses. The following is a receipe for one of the weirder materials commonly used: Fish and Whale Oil Soap: "Take one pound of whale oil soap and slice it into thin, small pieces. Place the pieces of soap in a pail, and add about one gallon of boiling or nearly boiling water; then stir until the soap is dissolved; dilute at the rate of one pound of solution per twenty gallons of water." Fire, too. was frequently used. A cyclone burner, the forerunner of the modern flame-thrower, effectively destroyed not only egg masses and caterpillars, but also hundreds of acres of woodland. To quote the Chief of the Control board: "As an exterminative method for use in woodland tracts, the felling of trees and their destruction, together with that of all other vegetation by means of fire, has no equal in terms of expedition and economy." All of the local citizenry was not overjoyed by the chemical baths being given their property. In 1891, the following story was carried by the Medford News: "Considerable opposition to the use of Paris Green for spraying was manifested by many people living in towns. A nVsHw' rtWeiing of opponents of the spraying was held in Medford. One citizen, who attempted to cut the hose attached to one of the spraying tanks, and threatened with violence the employees of the board who had entered upon his land, was arrested and fined. Others neutralized the effects of the spraying by turning the garden hose upon the trees and shrubs that had been sprayed, washing off the solution." Although admirable in scope, the early eradicative control methods failed. Not only did the gypsy moth survive, but the beast prospered, gradually extending its range northward REAL ESTATE REAL ESTATE WATERFRONT-DOLL HOUSE 10 ROOMS AND Two bedroom home on channel to Pistakee Lake that is sharp, sharp, sharp. Perennials, and to some extent, self-sowing biennials offer two advantages to the gardener: First, permanency. By d e f i n i t i o n . h e r b a c e o u s perennials are plants that die dpwn to the ground each winter, but carry over life in their crowns; and thus, appear anew the following spring Blooming only for one year, biennials, on the other hand, enter the great Garden In The Sky at the end of two growing seasons. The first year the young seddlings simply put forth a basal rosette of leaves. Not until the second spring - Summer are flowers produced. Fortunately, many biennials like forget-me-nots self sow readily; consequently, once planted, clumps are not only maintained, but actually gradually increase in size. Second, for the most part, the best background plants for flower beds are perennials. The white flower spikes of the black sankeroot, interesting prickly blue spheres of the globe thistle, and the gaily hued bloom of the foxtail lily not only create a spectacular display but also form a good backdrop for the smaller species. On the negative side of the ledger are cost and maintenance. Not only is the initial price paid for perennials, and, to some extent, biennials higher, but money spent 011 the materials required to fulfill yearly cultural needs frequently amounts to a considerable sum. Fertilizers and pesticides are expensive. Like most trees and shrubs, perennials should be fertilized every spring. No need for a special product. Lawn fertilizers fill the bill quite nicely. U n f o r t u n a t e l y , m a n y perennials and biennials are subject to attack by a wide variety of serious insect and disease pests. Borers in iris rhizomes, thrips on peonies, leaf miners in columbine, rust on hollyhock leaves, and botrytis, a fungal diseased capable of disfiguring a wide variety of spring flowering plants, are all afflictions which, if not controlled, will cause plants to gradually decline in vigor and showiness. Perennial gardens do not. even over the long haul, save time. Aside from the minutes and hours spent fertilizing and spraying, the great majority of species must be divided every three to five years in order to maximize bloom. Old large clumps simply do not flower as freely. An operation normally done at the same time as annuals are planted outdoors, clumpdivision in itself is quite a time consuming process I do not wish to create the impression that perennials and biennials are not desirable garden plants. Nothing would be further from the truth. Like all other species in the floral kingdom they have their place, and should not be viewed as a panacea to save both time and money. In my estimation, the most interesting flower beds are those in which a combination of perennials, biennials, and annuals are used. '% WHISPERING HILLS it SE"W WHAT?
