Mail Delays Caused By Zip Code Omissions Most complaints about slow mail are local, and most of the reasons for the delays are lack of zip codes in addresses, Postmaster LeRoy Smith said this week. "Letters going across town need zip codes just as much as letters going across the country", he said. "Letters with zip codes are removed from the mail stream and placed in no-zip sorting bins for handling. This slows up delivery." Postmaster Smith noted that there are 4,250,000,000 local letters without zip codes mailed BIRTHS McHENRY HOSPITAL Mr. and Mrs. Stephen DeGeorge, MeHenry, are parents of a daughter July 23. MEMORIAL HOSPITAL WOODSTOCK Mr. and Mrs. Craig* Leigh, Wonder Lake, are parents of a girl July 22. in this country yearly. "Here in MeHenry about 2,000 letters are mailed daily without zip codes", he said, "you can always find the local zip code in the telephone book yellow pages", he added. He noted that 90 percent of national mail now carries zip codes, while 84 per cent of local mail uses zip codes. "We clearly need an improvement in using local zip codes", he said. "Good local service is as important as good national service." NEW!
