AUGUST 28, 1974 Twice Told Tales FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Aug. 28, 1924) Alfred Nicholls who was born and reared in Volo met a horrible death in Chicago on Monday evening when his life was crushed out by the falling of an elevator under which the man had been at work. The fatality occurred in the basement of the Thompson building on North Clark street. Charles Miller, seventeen year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter F. Miller, who resides at Lily I,ake suffered the fracture of both bones in his lower right arm while cranking a Ford car A backfire of a motor caused the accident The McHenry volunteer fire department acknowledges the receipt of a check in the sum of $100 from Mr. and Mrs F.E Streed of Chicago who have a summer home on the east shore of the river The check was presented with the understanding that same be placed into the fund which is being set aside for the purchase of a suitable fire truck and equipment. William E. Holmes, civil war veteran and at one time a resident of this city, passed away at Milwaukee Aug. 23. He came to McHenry with his parents at the age of seven. His father for a number of years. conducted the old McHenry House and later acted as proprietor of the old Gage House in what is now the Westside but at that time known as Gagetown. Miss Lenore Freund, who has been spending part of the summer vacation in the home of parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe W Freund, left Sunday for Yorkville where she has been engaged as one of the teachers in their school. On Saturday evening, Aug. 16. the home of Mr and Mrs. John R Knox on Riverside drive was the scene of a pretty silver wedding anniversary surprise given in honor of Mr. and Mrs. John N. Twenty-Two Join Church Twenty-two new members were received into the fellowship at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran church. The new members joined the congregation by letter of transfer from other Lutheran congregations. At an especially appointed time in the 10:30 a m. worship service, each of the new families was introduced to the congregation and participated in a brief service of reception. All of the new families received certificates of church membership from Paster Roger Schneider. Following the service, the new members stood in a receiving line at the door of the church to be greeted by the membership of the parish. A reception to honor the new members will be held in September and will be sponsored by the Evangelism committee of the church. The new members received included Robert Cowles, Ruth Cowles, Thomas Cowles, Timothy Cowles, Sandra Cowles, Kathy Cowles, Robert Cowles Jr., Ronnie Cowles, James Boyd, Denise Boyd, Tricia Boyd, Greg Boyd, Walter Johnson, Beth Johnson, Maggie Johnson, David Johnson, Roger Pickell, Michael Hughes, Olaf Bergeson, Lilly Bergeson, Wilbert Schuhknecht and Emma Schuhknecht. A pretty wedding of this vicinity was solemnized at St. Patrick's church Tuesday morning, Aug. 28, when Miss Dorothy Knox and Mr. Carl Weber were united in holy bonds of matrimony. Father William O'Rourke officiated at the ceremony. Peggy Armstrong, 12 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lennox Armstrong, died at their summer home at Emerald Park Tuesday. Adele Froehlich regained the tennis crown by her great forehand smashes in defeating Charles Yycital on the semi finals and then went on to defeat Dorothy Althoff in the finals. Sister Mary Robertus, B.V.M., has recently been made Sister Superior at Waconia, Iowa. She was formerly Lucy Sutton of this city The undersigned has taken over the business known as Marshall's Bakery, Green street, McHenry, and will hereafter conduct same. Mrs. Marshall will act as manager. A full line of bakery goods will be carried Mrs. Agnes Wentworth. Gerald Freund, an experienced tire man from Cincinnati, Ohio, is now in the employ of his brother-in-law, Walter J Freund, the West side dealer, which assures customers of experienced service in the shop at all times. Dr and Mrs. C.W Klontz and Mr and Mrs. Nick Freund attended a surprise party on Frank Marzahl at Richmond. Any person paying his taxes by September 1 will avoid having his name appear in the delinquent 'ax list TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Sept. 8, 1949) Motorists will be interested to know that the colors for Illinois 1950 auto license plates will be ivy green on an off white base. Sept. 1 the Rev. James A. Vanderpool returned to this community as the first resident pastor of Christ the King church at Wonder Lake. He had left McHenry fifteen months previous after serving for a year as administrator of St. Patrick's parish and of Christ the King. He had been transferred to St. James Cathedral in Rockford. The death of 6 year old John Beyer of Marengo brought McHenry County's polio death toll to three and its number of cases to thirty-eight. The first Girl Scout leaders club breakfast of the season will be held Sept. 13 at the home of Mrs. Howard Reinboldt. Albert S. Blake, local Dodge- Plymouth dealer, has been appointed area chairman for the National Automobile Dealers association to stimulate active participation in the associations national program throughout McHenry county. Observer Sgt. Robert Svoboda of Lilymoor was pictured in a recent issue of the W'aukegan News-Sun with two other members of the National Guard participating in a 15 day training period for most of the units of the forty-fourth Infantry Division at Camp McCoy, Wis. Sgt Svoboda, a member of Lake County's "D" company 128th infantry regiment, was shown on the firing range with a 30 calibre machine gun. The Malfolds of West McHenry are the proud possessors of what they believe is a record size canteloupe, one weighing 13'4 pounds. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Sept. 3, 19641 James Selvaggio of McHenry Shores has purchased the Snack Shop on Green street from Arthur Johnson. Mr. Selvaggio has named his business Jim's Snack Shop Mary Jane Schulien, a summer resident, mother of four, died unexpectedly at McHenry hospital Aug. 26 after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage in her Villa Lane home. Many McHenry residents were surprised last Saturday evening as they watched the Steve £llen show to see in the audience Mr and Mrs. Adrian Thomas and daughter, Cathy, and former residents, Mr. and Mrs. James Fay. The state has issued a charter to Aero-P.A Inc., W. Idyll Dell road, McHenry, to buy, sell, repair and engineer new and used cars, aircraft and other power moving vehicles, wholesale and retail. A seven year old Worthmoor Estates boy remained in critical condition in a Chicago hospital following surgery made necessary due to injuries suffered when he was struck by a car Tuesday afternoon. The lad is William Damiani of W. Navajo, McHenry. Burglary occurred some time between Tuesday evening and Thursday at the new home of the Gerald Wagner family north of McHenry. Boettcher completed five years with the company. Colomer Named Territorial Sales Head At Goodyear The Goodyear Tire and Rubber company of Akron, Ohio, announced the promotion of Frank Colomer to the position of Territorial Sales manager in charge of wholesale and retail distribution in Northeast Illinois. Colomer was formerly store manager of the Goodyear Service store at 4400 West Rt. 120 in McHenry. Colomer joined Goodyear in August of 1966 as an assistant service manager at the Waukegan store. In November of 1966 he was promoted to service manager here in McHenry, and in 1967 he was promoted to credit sales manager. In October of 1968 Colomer was promoted to store manager. Colomer, his wife, and two children, will continue to live here in McHenry. Colomer has been replaced by Jim Fanselow, a native of SHARING THE BILL - Comedian Bob Newhart and a walking, talking robot named Maximilian E. Sight-Saver promote eye health and safety in a new series of TV public service spots for the National Society for the Prevention of Blindness. The pair will be seen beginning in September, kicking off national Sight-Saving month. LaPorte, Ind. Fanselow has a three-year retail sales background with Goodyear. Fanselow was assigned to the McHenry store Aug. 1st. He is married, has three children, and is planning to settle in the McHenry area by Sept. 1. AT BANKING SCHOOL Ormel Prust and Ronald Vacula, both of McHenry State Bank, McHenry, are among 1,652 students-bankers from 42 states, the District of Columbia, and several foreign nations who have just completed the annual two-week residence session of the thirtieth annual Graduate School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. The school, sponsored by the Central States conference consisting of the banker's associations of sixteen midwestern states, requires attendance for two weeks each year for three years for graduation. Gary Schaefer St Earns Degree At University University of Michigan students receiving degrees this summer attended the university's commencement ceremonies last Sunday. An estimated 2,500 students on the Ann Arbor campus were degree candidates. Gary C. Schaefer of 1509 N. Court street, McHenry, was the only degree candidate from McHenry. He worked for his Master of Science degree in Engineering. Damon J. Keith, U.S. district judge, was the main commencement speaker. STUDENT NURSE C athy Munyon, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Holmes, 2209 W. Fairview, McHenry, began orientation last week at the Rockford Memorial School of Nursing. The fifty-four young women and two men who are enrolled as freshmen began classes at the School of Nursing Monday, Aug. 26, and at Rock Valley college the following day. Thirty-three communities in Illinois, Wisconsin and Michigan are represented in the freshman class. He was Pres ident of the United Brother hood of Carpenters and Join ers of America in 1882 when his suggestion was adopted by the Central Labor Union in New York. The first Labor Day, then, was observed in 1882. In 1884 the Federation of Or ganized Trades and Labor Unions, which later became the American Federation of Labor, adopted the sugges tion and states (Oregon was the first) began to declare the first Monday in Septem ber a holiday. By 1894, when Congress declared the day a holiday in all federal offices and ter ritories, some thirty states had acted to make Labor Day a legal holiday. This year Labor Day is on the 2nd.
