Holiday Hillg Karen Kottke --w: Little League Teams Attend Baseball Game Many of the minor league players from the Little League of the I^kes Cub and Angel teams attended a baseball game between the Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals on July 27. Unfortunately the Cubs lost the game. This trip was none the less exciting for those youths who made it. Among the boys who enjoyed the game were Kevin Reid, John Wegener, Ray Hoglund, Dave Zemrus, Dave Sparacio, Don Hasten, Robbie Kirkland and Jim Leishering. Other team members included Richie Hamilton, Robert Johnson, Roy LeRoy, Eric Hultquist, Mike Penze, Scott Postal, Steve Rostand and Robert Torrez. Mr. Sparacio and Cberi Hoglund provided the transportation to the game for the boys. The coaching staff for the Cubs and Angels teams provided excellent training for the boys this year. Ron Wegener is the Cubs manager, LeRoy Beltz coached the team and Bill Boettcher was the assistant coach. There are many, many more folks responsible for the success of the Lakes Little League this season and we hope all of them will be with us again next season. APOLOGIES I would like to beg forgiveness from Denise Hughes for my failure to mention her in last week's article on the Girls Travelling Softball League tournaments. Denise played in the games and helped her teammates capture several trophies in so doing. This was an unintentional oversight, please forgive. LABOR DAY As the country proclaims a national holiday to celebrate its labor force, many may wonder what's to celebrate? This country's working class has been the basic ingredient which has established it as a great country. Hope everyone enjoys their holiday and doesn't forget cabinet out of the reach of small children. Dispose of any chemicalsi that have an un readable label so you will al-. ways know what you are put ting down on your lawn. More importantly, if a chemical is swallowed, the label will be needed so a doctor can pre scribe an antidote. BIRTHDAYS Happy birthday greetings to Ricky Douglas on Aug. 31, to Penny Appleyard and Doug Carroll on Sept. 3; to Larry Jende on Sept. 4; and to Ruben Gonzales on Sept. 5.- ANNIVERSARIES Anniversary roses to Erna and Mike Novak on their special day Aug. 31; to Joyce and Wally Karafa on their special day Sept. 4. By early August the imi of dn ict irought, disease and dam age hits home especially on bluegrass or fescue lawns. But is resodding necessary or can the lawn be revitalized through renovation? Home owners must answer the question themselves, but a good rule of thumb is to ren ovate in early fall if your lawn still has more than 50 per cent good grass. The arduous and time-consuming task of com plete reconstruction should be a last resort. The first step in renovation is to kill any broadleaf or viney weeds. A mixture of 2,4-Dand 2,4,5-TP (Silvex) is vyidely used to eradicate broad and small-leaved weeds ranging from clover to dandelions. Neither dry formulations nor liquid chemicals should be applied during a wind since tneir contact can damage shrubs, plants and flowers. Keep chemicals locked in a over the lawn with a power rake. It is almost impossible to sweep up seed with a power rake if you let loosened thatch dry a bit By power raking in early fall you can thin crabgrass and summer weeds, loosen thatch and make room for new grass leaf growth. Fall dethatching is better than spring on cool- season grasses, but springtime power raking is preferred for warm season grasses such as St Augustine. After the loosened thatch has dried, sweep it up and then water your lawn with a hose to wash seed into the soil. Keep the overseeded area moist so the seed can germinate but avoid overwatering since seed will not germinate in stand ing water. The last step is to put down a light fertilizer about three weeks after the seedlings are up to provide them with nu trients. Ideally, to force denser turf before winter, put down fertilizer lightly in early fall and then again in late fall. (Editor's note Dr Bill Daniel is responsible for turf re search at Purdue University and is a consultant to Ryan. He is a member of the Ameri can Society of Agronomy an'd is executive secretary of the Midwest Regional Turf Foun dation ).
