omsma/ZEZ July 1 cold storage inventory readings confirm that some of America's most popular seafoods are more plentiful than they have been in years The sudden transition from scarcity to surplus covers a panoply of seafood varieties - in all price ranges. Market prices are softening in response to the ample supplies and good buys are appearing in all product categories. Total frozen inventories on July 1, 1974, were record 424 million pounds - up 151 million pounds from a year ago. Supplies of most major fillet products were up substantially with ocean perch and flounder particularly heavy. All fillet and steak varieties on hand totaled 81.5 million pounds compared with 61.1 million pounds a year ago. Unusually heavy inventories of round and dr<>ssed fish have accumulated for salmon and headed and gutted whiting Holdings of frozen fish sticks and fish portions on June 1 climbed to 40 million pounds, which was 5<) percent more than a year ago. Inventories of frozen fish blocks, used in manufacturing sticks and portions, are at an all-time high This assures a continuity of supply of sticks and portions in the near future. Shellfish in storage on July 1, 1974, totaled 116.8 million pounds--30 million pounds more than a year earlier. Shrimp products led the list -with ample supplies of both raw headless and breaded shrimp. King and snow crab also were high on the list of plentifuls. July was the kickoff month for the heavy landing season for most species of fish and shellfish The existing inventories, plus new production will help to assure ample supplies through the summer months. This information is from National Marine Fisheries service. HERE AND THERE IN BUSINESS Ten Intermatic employees at Spring Grove stopped smoking for a year and were awarded $50 each by the company. But the money was the least significant factor, president Jim Miller said, because "according to American Cancer society statistics, they've added nine years to their lives." Miller made the $50 offer in a letter to employees Aug. 10, 1973. Thirty-six of Intermatic's 700 employees signed up for what he called the "I Quit Smoking club." The drop-out rate conforms to national averages for those who participate in formal non smoking programs, he noted. Members of the Intermatic "I Quit Smoking" club came from all work classifications at the plant. The list included Casey Mikosz, McHenry, and Bob Popelka, Spring Grove. Tracey Hoffman, Kimberly Waychunas, Lawrence Ekeroth, Fern Thompson, Margaret Nixon, Donald Corby, Richard Rehberg, McHenry; Mary Kohon, Island Lake; Larry Oonk, John Mergl, Ringwood; Timothy Lennon, William J.
