S K %. SECTION 2-PAGE 1-PLAINDEALER-FRIDAY. AUGUST 30, 1974 Uons Members Plan For Candy Day October 11 For the seventh year in a •row, John Oberweis of Aurora will strive to beat his own record in the annual Illinois Lions Candy Day for tfie Blind campaign. Overall state goal for the drive this year is $1.1 million. As trustee serving as Chairman for Candy Day and blind related activities in District l- J, Oberweis will be shooting for a local goal of $100,000. "We are most gratified that John has agreed to serve as Candy Day chairman and again take on the responsibility of the campaign," said Walter Wilson of Dundee, district 1-J Governor. Oberweis will face a challenging precedent as he tries to better his own previous records. During last year's one day drive District 1-J clubs were among the top in gross collections. "Each year contributions to the Lions' supported Leader Dogs for the Blind and the Hadley School for the Blind increase. Each year, too, the Lions' work in the areas of sight conservation and sight restoration programs grows," Oberweis said. "In District 1-J the Lions' Sensory Garden in Aurora attracts more and more visitors annually. And we find support for this worthy project grows annually too, and this is most gratifying." "In turn this is reflected In the enthusiasm of individual Lions and clubs for the traditional Candy Day drive. Prom the preliminary work already underway I predict we will meet our goal," he declared. All 28,000 Lions in Illinois are proud of what Candy day makes possible. Every Lion will give an extra measure of effort to meet this year's record $1.1 million goal Oct. 11, and District 1-J clubs will be among the pacesetters Oberweis concluded. By The Year 2000 By the year 2000, it ia esti mated that 85 percent of Ameri cans will be living in metropoli tan areas. Hold Kennedy Program For Representatives Zion Lutheran church in McHenry had a Kennedy program banquet Aug. 22 for r e p r e s e n t a t i v e s f r o m Algonquin, Crystal Lake, McHenry and Lake Zurich. After the banquet there was fellowship in singing and viewing a film which explained how this particular porgram began. It was the "brain-child" of a Rev. Kennedy, minister of a Presbyterian church in Coral Gables, Fla. The Kennedy program's chief purpose is to train "Soul" winners. It has been in existence at Zion Lutheran church for four years. Quite simply, it is an Evangelism Explosion. It consists of "concerned people who go out in teams to witness to a lost and dying world. Their message is Christian love which gives one the only true happiness." The Kennedy teams will start their evangelism calling again Sept. 6. Those interested in this rewarding work are asked to contact the church. This is something a Christian of any age can do. The leaders recall that Jesus promised that "You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit is come upon you and you shall be My witnessess." Acts 1:8". All interested persons should contact the Zion Lutheran church office or parsonage; both of which are listed in the telephone directory. FROM THE Spontaneous combustion can occur in silage stored at the normal range of 30- to 50- percent moisture if enough oxygen is present, says George J. Young, University of Illinois Extension adviser in McHenry county. And special techniques are required to fight spontaneous combustion fires in oxygen-free silage or grain storage structures, he adds. Usually the oxygen level is too limited to permit active flaming in silo fires, says Young. But smoldering or partial combustion can occur when filler doors are left open for long periods of time with the DAILY 9-9 SUNDAY 10-6 structure less than one-third full. The fire-fighting job is best left to experts, he continues. But there are some step-by-step procedures to follow if s p o n t a n e o u s c o m b u s t i o n occurs: -Close the unloader door and all other openings in the bottom of the structure. -Put the covers on roof access hatches, but don't dog them down. If excessive gas pressure builds up, the covers can then lift to relieve pressure. Get off the roof as quickly as possible. --Wait at least twenty-four hours . -Remove the cap from the drainpipe at the lower access opening and introduce carbon dioxide into the unloader cavity. It takes about 500 pounds of carbon dioxide at n o r m a l t e m p e r a t u r e a n d pressure to occupy the volume in one ring of an empty 20-foot- diameter structure. -Leave the structure closed as completely as possible, even if silo walls become hot enough to melt the sealer or force it out of joints. Don't spray water on the structure. Water may damage hpt, glass-coated sheets and Will not effectively cool the contents of the structure. -Open the unloader door and inspect the feed when wallB are cool and no smoke has issued from the breather valve for several days. If it is still too hot to handle, close the structure again. If the material is not too hot, dog down the roof hatch covers and resume normal feeding operations. -Test for pressure and vacuum when the structure is completely empty; r^seal if required and make any other necessary repairs.
