SEPTEMBER 28 St. Margaret Chapter of NAIM - Meet For Cards ~ Oak Room, St. Mary's - 7:30 p.m. HOW CAN n By Anne Ashley Q. How can I clean out a bottle that has contained sour milk? A. By shaking a mixture of baking soda and water vigorously in the bottle, then rinsing out with cold water. Q. How can I soften a stiff chamois? A. Soak in warm water which contains a spoonful of olive oil. Q. How can I perform a good cleaning job on enameled woodwork? A. You can do this nicely with a mixture of one cup kerosene, one cup vinegar, and a half cup water, all shaken up in a bottle and applied to the woodwork with a soft cloth, then followed with a dry cloth polishing. Q. How can I remove some road tar stains from my nylon hosiery? A. Rub some butter on them with a cloth until the stains disappear, then launder as usual. Q. How can I make my own good furniture polish? A. Two tablespoons of olive oil, and one of vinegar, added to a quart of warm water will make a very good one. Keep your solution warm while using. Q. How can I avoid the shine on woolen fabrics when ironing them? A. When pressing with a damp cloth, don't iron until the fabric is dry, for this causes that unwanted shine. Press quickly, then allow the steam to rise. This brings up the nap marvellously. Q. How can I make the driving of screws into hard wood easier? A. By lubricating the screw beforehand with ordinary soap or shaving cream. Q. How can I clean stainless steel cooking utensils? A. With steel wool dipped in lemon juice. Q. How can I cope with a familiar film of scum of "skin" that forms on the top of milk or cocoa when it boils? A. Instead of skimming it off, beat it into the beverage with a beater or spoon. In this way you will save nutritious milk solids and minerals. Q. Have you any tips for a good fly-repellent? A. A few drops of oil of lavender in a glass of boiling water not only chases away the flies, but quickly fills a musty- smelling room with a pleasant aroma. Goodness is not a com parisoii.
