(STAFF PHOTO WAYNE GAYLORD) Helicopter Rescue Demonstration To Be Held On Fox Lake A demonstration of air-sea rescue techniques by a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter will highlight the observance of COAST GUARD DAY in Fox Lake on Sunday, September 1st. The day's festivities will be centered at KORPAN'S LANDING at the west end of Fox Lake near Mineola Bay. Among the other facilities on hand for the day will be a Coast Guard BOATING SAFETY BOOTH where Coast Guard and Coast Guard Auxiliary personnel will be available to answer questions on boating safety, Federal and State equipment regulations, and changes in the new boating STRAWBERRY HILL HIGH POINT ENGLISH HORSE RIDDEN BY TAMMY MILLS The bright blue skies, the fortitude of the show committee and the enthusiasm of the contestants combined to make the Aug. 18 horse show at the Good Times Riding Academy, 8206 Bull Valley road, Woodstock, a roaring success. The visiting tack shop, an art display and the fact that the over-fence classes were held on a four- acre rolling hunt field, helped to draw over 400 entries and the hundreds of spectators that lined the ringside. The competition was stiff with many classes reaching an entry of 30 or more horses. When all the points were totaled, the local talents prevailed, winning 3 out of 4 top awards. The High Point Western horse was Shim-Sham ridden by Pat Chapman of Lake Bluff. The Reserve High Point Western horse was Cuttin Kitten ridden by Gail Risto of Woodstock. The High Point English horse was Strawberry Hill ridden by Tammy Mills of McHenry. The Reserve High Point English horse was Creole Lady ridden by Jeannette Winikates of Crystal Lake. The turnout for the Aug. 18 show was such as to indicate the need to divide the show by days for the next series to be held in October. The Western Show, complete with games, will be on Oct. 12; the expanded English Show will be on Oct. 13. The Good Times Riding Academy will be holding a series of playdays beginning in early fall. A Coast Guard recruiting booth will also be available where young men and women may learn the advantage being offered by the U.S. Coast Guard. Pleasure boat owners will also be given the opportunity to receive the Coast Guard Auxiliary's COURTESY EXAMINATION ... a free equipment and safety check of your boat by trained motorboat examiners. There is no cost or obligation connected with this examination. Boats that pass are awarded the coveted Courtesy Examination Decal. Boats not passing are not reported to any law enforcement agency ... only the boat owner is advised of the deficiencies. These boat examinations will be available at various locations throughout the Chain of Lakes. A list of examination stations will be available at the Boating Safety booth. Also available at the booth will be a listing of locations where SMALL BOAT SEAMANSHIP courses are to be conducted by Coast Guard Auxiliary and U.S. Power Squadron instructors. The main event of the day ... the "rescue" by the Coast Guard helicopter ... is scheduled to take place at approximately 2 p.m. in the waters of Fox Lake off Korpan's Landing. This demonstration will be conducted by personnel from the Coast Guard Helicopter Wing stationed at Glenview Air Station, and will include pickup of an injured person from the water and lowering of the patient in a basket to a surface vessel underway. Present plans also call for the helicopter to make a tour of the Chain of Lakes at low altitude so all boaters in the area will have an opportunity to view it close at hand. In the event of inclement weather, the demonstration will be rescheduled for the follwing day, September 2nd, at the same hour.
