With so much sports copy and so many pictures this issue, some may have to be held over for next week Our make-up artists haven't figured out how to fit a square peg into a round hole So. We said it might be a good time to skip a column and give everybody a rest. That's when our little Ilelen (line-o-type gal) gave the order "Write a column.," It 's hard to argue with a woman. Fall is in the air. Leaves are falling like our hair after a shampoo. School bells are ringing In our day that meant squeezing your feet into shoes after a summer of going barefoot. Torture. Those damyankees "don't show no respect" for our White Sox. It isn't bombs away like the days of the old Yankees, but they hit and run like scared rabbits. What the Sox need are new pitchers and more players from Iowa where they grow more than tall corn. The Cubs backed up t he truck last year to haul em out. They may have to crank up the truck and bring back a new batch Had a short visit with County Clerk Vern Kays. Not enough time to decide what we are going to do about our Sox for next year We really wanted Ron Santo to have a big year in a White Sox uniform. Could be old father time has caught up to him Dick Allen has a lot of hits, homers and RBI's But watch for the statisticians to count up his strikeouts and the times he has hit into double plays. They have already started to count the number of times he has forgotten the number of outs. One thing he could do before retiring is to teach his mates how to run bases. He cuts the inside of third base and heads for home while others circle half way to the grandstand The ranks are thinning Joe Sutton is the latest McHenry Old Timer to leave this earth. The Sutton name goes way back in the early history of McHenry A good name. We liked Joe When death scratches the name of a good friend off your list, you may gain a new friend, but vou never replace an old friend Bowling scores are back. Dnrl/n nnnh 1 I The women's 16 inch league ended the season in a championship game when Ed's Rental beat the First National Bank by a score of 13-8. Both teams came into the final game with a 8-1 record. Last year these two teams also had a championship game, with First National winning. Ed's Rental started the scoring in the top of the second inning with Kathy Boro hitting a homerun with one man on base. The Rentall scored 2 more runs in the top of the third with First National getting 3 runs. Fourth inning brought six runs for Ed's Rental with Julie Gende hitting a homerun. her first of two that night. The First National Bank came on strong in the bottom of the fifth inning by getting 5 runs, even though Sis Kloepfer, catcher for the Rental made some excellent plays at home plate. Ed's Rental finished the scoring with 3 runs in the 7th inning - final score 13-8. What kept Ed's Rental in the game was good fielding by Judy Boro - left field, Kathy McBreen - center field, and Jeanie Busse - right field. The Rentals infield consisted of from 1st to 3rd base: Jeanie Gende, Millie Gende, Kathy Boro, Julie Gende and Bev Scala Substitute players for the game were Mary Beth Gende, Leslie Nordenson, and Kim Pinkstaff. Joanne Ospalik, pitcher for Ed's Rental, with a record of 8-1, kept First National to a maximum of 12 hits, while Ed's Rental got 26 hits off of First National. Ed's Rental was coached by John Gende and Mike Gende. The Women's 16 inch league played every Monday night during the summer and are looking forward to next season. Coach Chuck Cuda's McHenry high golf team opened their fall season on Tuesday with a nifty win over Grant high school. The score was 155 to 193. Hosier, pictured with NIU offensive coordinator Ralph Zurbrugg, is a senior tight end. Ippoliti's Huskies will open their 1974 campaign Saturday, Sept. 14 at 1:30 p.m. (CDT) by hosting Long Beach State University at Huskie Stadium in DeKalb. This follows the NIU season opener Saturday, Sept. 7 at McNeese State University in Lake Charles, La. (PHOTO BY HERN SHENKIN) By Dick Rabbitt Coach Bill Day will take his "Fighting Warriors" to Mundelein tomorrow to open the 1974 football season. Sophomore game at 12 p.m. and the Varsity at 2 p.m. Spirit is still running high in the Warrior camp, and from the looks of things the Warriors could be a surprise in the North Suburban. In talking with various people around the league, the comment is always "Watch McHenry this year". With a veteran line returning, and with plenty of speed and depth in the backfield, the Warriors will indeed be gunning for revenge on their North Suburban conference foes. A couple of linemen have stood out so far this week in practice, Kerry Jernigan and Roger Gerstad. Credit must be given where it is due, and these two lads have earned it this past week Coach Day is confident that the Warriors will be ready for Saturday's game The Mustangs lost a lot of boys by graduation Only returning letterman in the backfield is Rick Roothe. but he was one of SKYLINE o u t * 1 JO - 1 Mile Eo»t of McHenry P®™Sept 6 thru Sept 12^^™ I SIDNEY POITIER BILL COSBY Aryj Iharry belafonte As Geechir Dan UPTOWN SATURDAY , NIGHT the top scorers in the conference last year. They have a veteran defensive line, but the offense is spotty, with a lot of newcomers filling in the positions. It looks as if it will shape up to be a real ball game, so let's all journey to Mundelein on Saturday and root the Warriors home to a victory. Coach Bill Hutchinson "Running Warriors" open their 1974 cross country season on Tuesday at West campus. Buffalo Grove and Lake Zurich will provide the opposition. Looking in mid season form at this time are John Mclnerney, John Barnings, Andy Oakley, Tim Talbot, Kevin Wynveen and Greg Worm. Showing vast improvement in the pre-season training are: Greg O'Halleran, Ron Himpelmann, Steve Thorns, and Randy Blankenhorn. Once again it is crystal ball time, and I'm picking the Warriors to start the season with a win over the Mustangs. Lake Forest over Dundee Zion over Libertyville (ZeeBees the team to beat this year) Barrington over Crown (Barrington always a contender) Crystal Lake over North Chicago (Tigers too strong for War hawks) Coach Hutchinson feels that the team has the potential to do an outstanding job this season.
