(STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) Tennis Explosion Hits McHeniy Area By Gary Gray McHenry, l ike the rest of the nation, is experiencing a tremendous boom in tennis. Just a few years ago it was possible to walk onto a court at the high school or at the park at anytime. The courts are now in almost continuous use from 7 a.m. until dark As part of i ts summer program McHenry high school offered tennis lessons for children aged 8 to 18 The response was excellent and six classes were held Many of the older participants competed in the Aurora Junior Open at the Westwind tennis club in Aurora. McHenry County college offered both beginning and intermediate tennis classes for adults through the high school in McHenry this summer. Over seventy adults were in the classes and the Junior college is planning on having from three to five courses this fall One of the biggest changes on the local courts in the past two vears has been the increasing number of younger players. Some local elementary schools have taken note of this interest and are beginning to investigate the possibili ty of building tennis courts. The city of McHenry held a tennis meet this year as part of i ts growing summer recreational program on the renovated courts at city park. The McHenry area Javcees also sponsored a tennis meet this past weekend and were so pleased with the results that they are considering hosting meets next year for both youngsters and adults.
