Market Place Woodstock, Illinois McHenry, Illinois percent, plastics 6 percent, and wood containers, 1 percent. Large grocery bags will continue to be in short supply; one national chain reported jying 2 cents each - up about 14 percent over 1972. A regular grocery bag holds about a $7 to $8 sale -- the retail food chain profit reportedly (in 1973) was 34 cents on an average sale. This indicates that the cost of bags may equal over one half of the grocery store profit, according to a report by the National Economic Analysis Division of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. If tempting words such as "free" or "extra money for you" or "will cost you nothing" are printed on the advertisement, be suspicious. Your time, money, energy or work are somehow involved in any of these broad claims. Other warning signals include offers that imply you have been specially selected or that you are going to get something free or far below the regular price. Sometimes you are told that you have to decide "right now" or lose the deal or that you must sign something but you don't need to read it. Many deceptive selling schemes are used in advertisements and most of us can be sold something by at least one of them. A recent survey by the postal service showed that 63 percent of the people in the United Sates over 18 years of age have made a purchase as a result of direct mail solicitations. Some of the consumer information available at the University of Illinois Extension office are two booklets, one entitled "Consumer Credit, uses, costs and laws" and "Your Family and Consumer Credit." These are obtainable at the Extension office in the old court house on the Square in Woodstock, and are free to all McHenry county citizens. Auxiliary Notes From V.F.W.
