PAGE 9 - PLAINDEALER-FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER N. 1*74 Holiday Hills Karen Kottke 385-667S 1 Girl Scout Troop Needs New Leaders Now that school has been in session for a few weeks and things have settled down around the old homestead, we're hoping a few mothers will be available for volunteer work with Girl Scout troop 478. The troop is losing lx>th its leaders and the charter will not be renewed unless new leadership is pledged There is a large membership in this troop and it would be most unfortunate to lose the charter because of adult apathy. Anyone interested in a fulfilling position with the youth in our area can contact Marge Connell at 385-3756 or Tillie Williams at 385-8654 for further information TROOP 478 TRIP On Tuesday, Aug 22, several of the girls from troop 478 attended a boat tour at Lake Geneva, Wise. The group arranged to catch the mail run tour. A postmistress deposits mail at 55 stops as the boat tours the lake. The tour takes approximately two hours to complete. Many of the girls and their ehaperones stopped at Honey Bear Farm on the way home. Cheri Hoglund, Tillie Williams, Mimi DeWitt, and Helen Boettcher acted as chauffeurs and ehaperones for the group. Marge Connell also acted as ehaperone for the following girls who attended the field trip: Dale Williams, Angela Catanzaro, Cindy and Doreen Rasbaugh, Jeanna Boettcher, Chris Connell, Priscilla Kasprzyk, Debby Bartkus, Cheri Bruser, Noreen DeWitt, Diana Gregg, Kiki Hughes, Jeana Koeppen, Val Priko, Karen Thietje, and Dawn Douglas. VACATIONING Part of the Connell family was on the go for one last camping fling, Sept. 6-15. Jack, Marge and Gary spent the week camping, fishing, and enjoying the wilds of Northeastern Minnesota. Marge reports that the fishing was excellent, the bears active, and the weather a bit too nippy (with temperatures plunging to the upper 20's at night) for this early in the season. After a very relaxing week, the Connells began their trek homeward but interrupted it for a short visit with Marge's brother and his family in Wisconsin. THEN THE SURPRISE!!! Arriving home tired and weary. Marge and Jack Connell were greeted by their children, who had a delightful twenty - third anniversary present waiting for them in the form of a beautiful new color T V. What s a gift and terrific surprise awaiting the weary travelers. ANOTHER TRAVELER Now that we're on the subject of vacations, Pat Hughes and her daughters, Denise and Kiki, took a driving tour of six southern states. Among the sights they encountered were the Cumberland Gap, Appalacia, the Great Stone Mt. in Georgia (the largest above ground piece of granite in the world), they also enjoyed the sights in Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Indiana, and Alabama. Pat tried in vain to contact recently transferred residents, Craig and Carolyn Stackhouse and the Hellmigs, who were former residents of the area, now residing in the South. Luck was not with Pat and the girls, but they certainly enjoyed the leisurely pace and returned home relaxed and refreshed for the final weeks of the summer vacation FAMILY REUNION Last weekend (Sept 14-15) the Hughes family entertained guests from Ed's family for a family reunion outing Many of the family members remained as the Hughes' guests for the entire weekend. This is the fourth year the Hughes family has entertained family and friends from Chicago and other suburban areas. On Saturday afternoon, Pat and Fd were pleasantly surprised by an unexpected visit from former residents, Ruth and Rich Hanke. The Hankes have recently acquired a farm in Almond, Wis SUCCESSFUL PICNIC The Holiday Hills Property Owner's Association picnic was a huge success for both the association's treasury and all the residents who were awarded prizes. The association is grateful to all those who participated in the planning and execution of the picnic There were many folks operating booths and helping out at concessions. PLAN BAZAAR Plans are underway for the Holiday Hills Women's Club annual Christmas bazaar. The ladies are busy preparing their wares for the scheduled date, Nov. 23, at St. Patrick church hall in MeHenry. We're hoping to draw a large crowd for the sale as we'll be supplied with many, many gift items plus refreshments will be available. As always the club would be grateful for assistance from club members and anyone interested in offering their services for creating crafts for the bazaar. BIRTHDAYS Birthday greetings to Jimmy Drew on Sept. 21; to Roger Saunders on Sept. 22; to Gary Connell on Sept. 23; to Salli Bartkus and Terry Mickelvitz on Sept. 26; and to Bill Abbink and Linda Thietje on Sept. 27. ANNIVERSARY Happy anniversary roses to Marge and Frank Krueger on their special day, Sept. 26. The average American works 50 weeks out of the year to equip his home with comforts and conveniences - then spends his vacation in a cabin or tent, with none.
