ppt "$k* The Viscounts By Bob Wiles and Sandra Betancourt In this article we will endeavor to convey to the readers of the Plaindealer what Drum corps is all about and how this organization is pledged to do everything? possible to mold the lives of our young people into responsible young adults. A Drum corps season really starts with the first practice after Labor day. This is the time when you never hear from or about members because all of their time is spent in preparation for the next « , N' PRESENTS BARBEQUE RIBS NIGHTLY 1 FOR *3.50 plus we have expanded our menu to include delicious T-Bone, Rib Eye and Strip Steaks at a reasonable price. (dining room dosed Tuesday) Wonder Lake, III. 7518 Hancock Dr. 653-9081 summer. Fall, winter and spring are spent at either full corps practices or sectional practices on Tuesdays and sometime Wednesday or Thursday. The corps people are getting together on their own to learn and perfect their parts and building a strong sense of pride in their sections, either the horns, the drums or the color guard which then come together in a total sense of price and belonging to their own corps. All of our members feel this pride. This is why drums corps members have little or no time to be caught up in our present day vices such as smoking pot, usage of hard drugs, etc. These children are kept very busy reaching their goal and consequently, this sense of pride does help keep them out of trouble. All Drum corps people know that our support comes from the interest parents or boosters who would not allow a new member to join or stay in the corps if this sort of thing goes on. The feeling for the corps is so strong in our members that a few contests this past sea son, many of our Viscounts left the competition field in tears because they knew they had made mis takes which cos t the corps a higher p lac ing. But these same people were the ones working harder a t the next pract ice to perfec t the areas where mistakes were made Why young people belong to a Drum corps i s a ques t ion tha t i s very difficult to figure out. A corps member must be able to at tend prac t ices two, three or four times a week. A corps member must be ready to spend a l l weekends of the summer traveling to parades and contests and endless hours of practices between parades and contest. They must be able to survive long bus rides, eating at drive-ins or buying hot dogs from the contest area. They must want all of this and still face being told this step or that note was wrong plus being given fund raising projects for money toward this or that. Now, realizing all of these things, come with us sometime and watch the chests swelling and the backs straighten out when these m^gic words are spoken - "On the starting line, from McMenry, III . under the sponsorship of The American Legion Post 49] The Viscounts" This is what keeps a Drum corps going Kids wanting to compete as part of a unit, wanting to be recognized for doing well If anyone doubts any of this, please come down to a practice and see what goes on. See how a Drum corps ends the boring, hot summers that parents and children have to contend with. The Viscounts are entering their twenty-fifth year of existence and are preparing for next summer. We have had bad years and good years but next year is going to be our best with our new dedicated manager Dick Ludig, a drum corps man for many years who has decided that after twenty-five years, it is about time for the Viscounts to be a No. 1 corps. If anyone between 12 and 21 is interested in joining this corps with such pride and tradition, come on down to the American l^egion on Tuesdays betwen 7 and 9:30 p.m. PAGE 17 - PLAINDEALER-FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER Z», tfft Political ~ Come in and browse, you'll get ideas for furnishing your bath and discover many charming gifts. 3012 W Rte. 120, McHenry East of New Bridge - Free Parking 385-0048 Mon.-Thurs. 9-5:30, Fri. 9-9, Sat. 9-5 Complete planning and installation of fixtures and accessories.
