" •% ' (Don Peasley Photography) Farm Bureau Focuses Interest On Government McHenry County Farm Bureau members will become increasingly involved in local activities, including those that center around the county government. This became evident with the adoption of resolutions at the 62nd annual meeting last week and in the report by Ervin Walters, outgoing president who has served eight consecutive years on the board- maximum allowed by the by laws. Walters said he sees increased emphasis on local affairs and cited proper use of land, assessment, land fill, zoning and taxation as some of the areas where farmers will become more involved. In the resolutions adopted, farmers voted to support development of land fill that would use old gravel pits, brought up to EPA standards. They want farmers to have a major role in the land use planning. They believe farmers must take the lead to protect good farmland throughout Illinois. McHenry County. Farm Bureau members oppose export controls, preferring a free market, to determine prices, and they oppose any kind of a grain reserve in government hands. Grain surpluses, when developed, should be stored and kept under the control of farmers to prevent government-owned feed grains from overhanding the market and serving as a price depressant. Five new board members joined the seventeen-member board. They include: Ed Gourley, Woodstock, Hartland township, corn and soybean farmer who operates 500 acres. Allan Swanson, Woodstock, Door township, dairy farmer with a milking herd of 50 cows who operates 300 acres Jack Young, Spring Grove, Burton township, poultry and hog farmer who operates 2,300 acres. Don Cash, Harvard, Chemung township, cattle and grain farmer who operates 400 acres. Jim Hallisy, Hebron, Hebron township, who has a 55-head dairy herd, raises purebred hogs and farms 320 acres. Re-elected to the board are: Ed Meier, Jr., Algonquin township; Elmer Hill, Coral township; John Martin, Marengo township, and Keith Weingart, McHenry township. Ervin Walters completed his sixth year as president, presiding at the business session as his final duty. Walters was presented a plaque by Jim Book, Harvard, in behalf of the board, r e c o g n i z i n g W a l t e r s ' distinctive leadership and praising him for his part in starting the Consumer Information program and in creasing Farm Bureau participation in local governmental activities. Earlier, Walters presented a certificate to Lee Kortemeier, Country Companies agent who retired this summer after forty years of service. He also presented a special award to Stanley Church, former board member who was also active with the affiliated companies. Church was attending his fiftieth consecutive McHenry county annual meetings. Walters reviewed his eight years of service, six as president, and enumerated four areas where new programs have been developed or old ones greatly expanded: 1 - Formation of a Young Farmers committee. 2 - Formation of a Farm Bureau Women's committee. 3 - Development during the past several months of the C o n s u m e r I n f o r m a t i o n program in conjunction with five other northeast Illinois County Farm Bureaus. 4 - Increased emphasis on an information program aimed at informing the members and also at city friends. Larry Harris, executive s e c r e t a r y , r e v e a l e d membership reached an all- time high of 3,714 members in the fiscal year ending Aug. 31. Harris took over as executive secretary July 1, 1973, and new programs have evolved to e n c o u r a g e g r e a t e r membership. LOOK! Operating expenses have risen sharply since the last increase 10 years. Besides new program requiring financing, the Illinois Agricultural association, through its voting delegates representing all members, approved a $3 a member dues increase. So far the past year McHenry County Farm Bureau has taken that assessment, amounting to $10,500, from the treasury. Walters said the Farm Bureau cannot continue to absorb that loss. Last year it had an income of more than $110,000 and expenditures that produced a net loss of $7,500. What is the Newman club? The Newman club, as it is popularly called on a public school campus, is a Catholic community of students and faculty - in this case at McHenry County college. Their program of faith, worship, service, social and cultural activities is enhanced by building a better community. The Newman club is dedicated to the service of human needs, committed to witness and administer in connection with other communities. Bishop Arthur J O'Neill, bishop of Rockford, has appointed Father John C. Holdren to be director of and chaplain at MCC in addition to his other parochial duties at St. Thomas the Apostole parish. Father Holdren is in the process of establishing a Newman club at McHenry County college. The club will promote and develop true Christian friendship through spiritual, intellectual, and social activities for Catholics. It is recognized for its ability to congregate young Catholics r e p r e s e n t i n g n u m e r o u s professions, occupations, and interests who might otherwise be denied these contacts due to the diversity of living. "The campus ministry," Father Holdren stated, "attempts to fill the role in a variety of ways: planning religious services, assisting those of no particular confession to express their beliefs in action, counseling, and to the best of our ability sharing in the light of the Gospel. We hope the Newman club at McHenry County college will be a center of a Christian community of faith, worship and service in which the students will be led to understand how profoundly in Christian action humans can realize their abilities," Father Holdren commented. The first meeting of the Newman club will take place Tuesday, Sept. 24, at 1 p.m. in the IIT Office (directly inside the administrative wing). All are welcome to come and find out what Newman is all about and attempting to do on a college campus. Father Holdren's office is also presently in.the IIT office. He will be at the college Wednesday afternoons from l to 4 p.m. and on Friday mornings from 9 to 11 a.m. Other times he can be contacted at St. Thomas rectory, 200 Washington street, Crystal Lake. The Rev. Robert Hoffman is diocesan director of Campus Ministry and is presently serving at Northern Illinois university in DeKalb.
