American Legion Auxiliary News MCHENRY UNIT NO. 491 By Pearl Cooper After the advancement of the flags, the singing of the "Star Spangled Banner" and the pledge of allegiance, the September meeting was called to order by newly elected president, Mrs. Roy (Lauretta) Homo. Mrs. David (Doris) Henken, Membership chairman, announced that the membership drive is now under way and all members can send their dues to her or to any member of the team. Past president, Mrs. Lloyd (Midge) Scharf, announced that the unit past presidents were going to have their annual dinner and all past pres ents were to contact her for their reservations. She jlso announced that the McHerry County Past Presidents' dinner will be held in Wonder Lake Oct. 17 and all past presidents nf the McHenry unit planning to attend are to call Mrs. Scharf with their reservations. Rehabilitation chairman, Mrs. Victor (Marie) Howe, announced that playing cards, deodorant, combs, stationery, toothpaste, t-shirts, etc. are needed by the Elgin veteran patients. $25.00 was donated to the Monday Morning program at Elgin hospital. Mrs. Ceil Violett and Mrs. Marge Datz were elected as delegates to the McHenry County council, with Mrs. Ruth Mrachek and Mrs. Lydia Fenner as alternates. All members of the auxiliary are welcome to attend the county meetings, which are held on the first Friday of each month. All members of the auxiliary were invited to attend the installation of the new officers of the 11th district Saturday, Setp. 21, at the Plainfield post home. Mrs. Homo will be installed as the newly elected chaplain for the 11th district auxiliary. Past President Frances Matchen installed Ceil Violett as secretary and the charter was draped for departed members, Eileen Swanson and Jennie Mae Richardson, by President Lauretta Homo and standing in for chaplain, Reba Owen, Mrs. Lydia Fenner. Americanism Chairman Virkir t'oMari announced that an outside flag was given to Valley View school and also on to the West campus high school. Foreign Relations Chairman Ruth Mrachek announced that West Java, in Indonesia, will be the "Country for 1974-75". The CARE box was passed and the funds will go for new schools in that country. She also asked for pictures and clippings of West Java for her Foreign Relations scrapebook. Ways and Means chairman, Mrs. Courtney (Ceil) Violett, announced that the auxiliary will sponsor the third annual chicken dinner on Sunday, Oct. 27, serving noon to 4 p.m. It will be open to the public. Tickets are being sent in the mail to the members and can also be obtained from Mrs. Violett, or her co-chairman, Mrs. Jack (Pearl) Cooper, or can be purchased at the door. "Happy Birthday" was sung to Grace Latimer and Frances Latimer. Joanne Garrelts was not present to receive the attendance prize. Ceil Violett and Harriet Mikosz were winners of the 'special prizes'. It was announced that the Publicity book compiled by Communications Chairman Pearl Cooper received a second place award at the Department convention. There were ten books entered and only first and second place were awarded prizes. Mrs. Cooper had won first place in both the 11th d i s t r i c t e l i m i n a t i o n competition and the 2nd division competition Maria Guettler. Music chairman, led the group in the singing of "America" and as Blood chairman, urged all members to donate blood at the Kiwanis Blood Bank. Twenty-seven members attended the meeting with the refreshments served by the past officer, with Midge Scharf in charge. The October refreshment committee will be headed by Grace Latimer and will be held Monday, Oct. 21, at the post home. Area Pilgrimage For Holy Year Celebration In conjunction with the Holy Year celebration declared by Popt Paul VI of the Roman Catholic church, the McHenry deanery has announced plans for a pilgrimage and Holy Year conference to be held Oct. 13 at St. Mary's church in Woodstock. The fourteen parishes in the McHenry deanery will participate and have representation. A pilgrimage is a journey to a sacred place undertaken as an act of religious devotion, either simply to venerate, or to ask the fulfillment of some need, or as an act of penance or thanksgiving, or a combination of these. The pilgrimage commences when the people from the deanery leave their homes and gather at a designated area at St. Mary's church and continue to process into the church for the celebration of the Mass which will begin at 1:30 p.m. Bishop Arthur J. O'Neil will be celebrant and all parish priests attending will be concelebrants. Workshops on Education, Administration, Respect of Life, Social Action and Liturgy will begin after Mass at 2:30 p.m., with refreshments served. The General Assembly will reconvene in the church at 4:15 p.m. The theme of the day will be Renewal- Reconciliation.
