T" • AINDF \LER-WEDNESDAY. SEPTEMBER g, 1*74 EARL WALSH TURNING THE CORNER-Catching a Wildcat punt on the 24 yard line, Ev Klapperich (left) cuts towards the sideline evading Libertyville tacklers. Ev, aided by some fine Warrior Mocks, raced 76 yards for the McHenry score. (STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) Just turned our calendar for the week and read this: "The secret of happiness is something to do". That should make us one happy fellow. SPORTS EDITOR--I Friday night we climbed the ladder to the press box for the Warrior - Libertyville football game. Reminded us of the davs FOURTH DOWN-Long yardage and seconds to go. Penalties set the Warriors back to the 30 yard line as the half drew near. But Quarterback Don Rode got off a pass to Ev Klapperich (right) who Was brought down inches from the goal line. With 5 seconds remaining, George Hansen was in for the tf"D. The score gave the Warriors a 15-0 half-time lead. By Dick Rabbitt Coach Bill Day's "Fighting Warriors" won their third game of the season as they blasted the defending champs, Libertyville, 29 to 12 last Friday night here. Playing without the services of regular quarterback Steve Kasprzyk. who was injured Thursday, it took Don Rode about a quarter to get the feel of the game From that time on it was all McHenry. The score does not indicate the superiority shown by the Warriors on Friday night. With Rode at quarterback, and George Hansen having his finest game as a Warrior the "Cats" were no match for rampaging Warriors. Neither team could muster any offensive threat during the opening period, and both teams were forced to punt twice. After a Warrior drive was halted at the Cat 27, the Warriors in turn held the Libertyville offense. The Cat's punter Mike Linvall punted to the Warrior 24. where Ev Klapperich gathered in the kick and headed for the sidelines, making the turn and headed upfield behind a wave of Warrior blockers, the McHenry speedster tightroped the sideline, and cutting in behind an excellent block broke loose at the 20 and jogged into the end zone for the first score of the game. Ray Williams' pass to Steve Lane was good and the Warriors led 8 to 0 with 7.54 left in the second period. Klapperich's run could be called the turning point of the game, as the defensive minded Warriors knew that the Wildcats were going to be in trouble throughout the evening. On the ensuing kickoff Michel returned the Warrior kickoff back to the McHenry 40. but again the defense held and forced the Cats to punt. Taking over on the 23 the Warriors marched 77 yds. to score With Hansen and his second and third efforts. Lane and Dulberg. the Warriors marched to the 20 Penalties set them back to the 30 Rode hit Klapperich with a pass, and he was tackled inches from the goal line With time running out. low and behold the Wildcats called a time out with 5 seconds remaining on the clock Given new life. Hansen scooted into the end zone, and Whitehead's kick, made it 15 to 0 at the half Nuss returned the second half kickoff back to the Warrior 34 With Hansen and Lane running like demons, behind fine blocking of Yoight. Eppel. Dix Jernigan. Roberts and Barry the Warrior's marched 66 yds with Hansen going over from the 5 for his second touchdown of the evening Whiteheads kick was again good and the Warriors led 22 to 0. More important was the fact that the Warriors used the clock for seven minutes and twenty seven seconds in this drive. I^ate in the period Nuss intercepted a "Cat' ' pass and returned to the Warrior 40. Again Hansen, Lane and Dulberg scrapped it out yard by yard, and as the quarter ended they were on the Wildcat 26. On the first play of the final period Hansen went 12 to the 14. Dulberg got 4 to the 10. Then Hansen broke up the middle and ran into paydirt for his third T.D. of the night. Whitehead's kick was again good and the Warriors led 29 to 0 with 11 minutes left in the game. DAY USES RESERVES With a 29 to 0 lead, and not taking any chances of injuries. Coach Day sent in the shock troops for valuable game experience. It was during this time that the Wildcats managed to get on the scoreboard. Lidvall 's 32 yd. pass to Baker was good for the T.D (The Warrior's defense had managed to hold opponents scoreless for 11 quarters, prior to the Cat T.D.) With 1:15 remaining Hess scampered 7 yds. into paydirt for the second Libertyville T.D., but by that time Warrior fans were chanting "We're Number One" and the game ended with the Warriors running out the clock It was a great win for the Warriors. Not only did they beat Libertyville. but the win kept them on top of the North Suburban along with Barrington and Zion. One of these two will fall next week, as they match up. in the game of the week at Barrington next Saturday The Warriors were indeed the superior team. The offensive line opened hole after hole for the backs Hansen toted the leather for 14 yds. alone For the second week in a row., the Warriors held their opponents to less than 100 yds in total offense. So frustrated were the Wildcats that on numerous occasions, they had only 10 men on the field, while at other times they had 12 men on the field. It is no secret that the coaching staff was well pleased with the game Friday night. Coach Day remarked "Our offensive line really took it to them and then some" The happy coach then added "Don't forget that after Don Rode settled down, he did a great job". Day then added. "Wasn't that George 1 Hansen > something tonight ". I ' l l go along with that statement and add one of my own. The Warrior's were just GREAT STATS: Rushes Nuss Hansen Klapperich Dulberg Lane Ludwig Rode PASSING Rode 2-6-33. RECEIVERS: Klapperich 2-33. The difference is that we didn't need help at the top in those hav mow davs Our regular hoister upper, Gary Collins, wasn't quite up to the job so Tom Phillips, a husky fellow, hoisted us through the trap door with the greatest of ease. Tom then picked up his camera to take pictures of the entire game. Gary may be back in form for the next home game. Must admit that the first few plays of the game had us wondering about the glowing reports about our Warriors. But. after Ev Klapperich's 76 or 77 yard brilliant touchdown run. things turned around and the boys made a believer out of us. When the game started, we asked if the lighting had been improved Nope The boys in the box were quick to point out that somebody had washed the windows George Hansen put on a real show with his speedy thrusts, many of them right up the middle. He's fast ' With quarterback Steve Kasprzyk on the sidelines with an injury, Don Rode stepped in to do a nice job in directing the team •S ou will be reading the full report on the game, then the "Player of The Week" report so it is best not to go through the lineup with our comments Everybody knows that John Dix was outstanding at his end position It was also nice to see Steve Whitehead kick those extra points with such accuracy McHenry had many years in the past when those extra points were scarce. So Let's just say it was a great team effort that gave the Warriors a 29-12 win over the Libertvville Wildcats. - And let 's not forget to give Coach Bill Day and his staff a pat on the back When the team loses, the coach gets the blame. Seems fair to give credit when victory comes along. Athletic teams are not the onlv ones who lose top performers through grad uation. Just watch the "band cheerleaders, and Pom- Pom girls They looked mighty good to us in spite of the graduation toll. Drove the new road connecting Bull Valley Road and Idyll Dell Road and it brought back memories of the days when we rode our pony through the fields in that area. Those, were the days. No traffic problems. Clyde Blackwell took a trip to North Carolina and sent us a card w ith picture of a coffee pot big enough to cover half of our front lawn.
