Most good shoppers are now label - trained. They look for label markings that show the product has been pre - tested for quality and safety by such experts as the Underwriter's laboratory <UL), the Good Housekeeping testing center and others But what about products that carry no such label assurances" Very simply, you buy at your own risk. Nonetheless there is something you can do if the product proves to be hazardous. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety commission has established a toll-free "hot line" phone number and anyone can report a hazardous product or, for that matter, a product - related injury by calling 800-638-2666. Again, the phone call is free and you can do your part to help rid the market of unsafe products by reporting hazardous items to the Safety commission. underwater physiology; (3) basic skin and scuba equipment skills; (4) first aid for diving accidents; (5) environment and marine life: (6) planning a scuba dive as well as work with mask, fins and snorkel. Certified divers from this course will be able to participate in the Scuba Club organized at the YMCA on the second and fourth Sunday of each month to have planned activities and water practice. For further information please call the YMCA at 459-4455. THE LAW SERVES YOU GENERAL PARTNERSHIP - vs- LIMITED PARTNERSHIP "A rose is a rose is a rose", but a partnership may be general or limited, says the Illinois Sate Bar association. Each member of a general partnership is liable for 100 percent of the partnership obligations without regard to the percentage of profits he may share. A general partner's liability is not limited to his investment. A limited partnership consists of one or more general partners and one or more limited partners. Limited partners are restricted in their rights to participate in the management of the business. The general partners manage the business and have the same liability for losses as they would in a general partnership. Limited partners share profits like general partners or receive other compensation by way of income but their liability for losses is limited to the amount of their capital investment. A general partner in a limited partnership is tjiuch the same as a general partner in a general partnership. On the other hand, a limited partner more closely resembles a stockholder in a corporation. The Illinois State Bar association points out that every type of business organization has comparative advantages and disadvantages for the investor and the tax consequences of his ownership vary, depending upon whether he is a proprietor, a gejieral partner, limited partner or corporate shareholder. Before selecting a firm in which to do business, consult your lawyer. ALUMINUM ELECTRICAL WIRING IN ^ YOUR HOME? One of the hazards the Product Safety commission is particularly interested in these days is the use of aluminum in home electrical wiring systems An estimated two million homes and mobile homes have been constructed using aluminum wiring since 1965. The commission has received numerous reports that home fires have been traced to the use of aluminum conductors in branch circuits as the result of overheated terminals involving aluminum wiring and a receptacle or switch. The Product Safety commission is now evaluating such information from the public and if you've had similar problems your added comments could be influential in ending a potentially hazardous construction practice. Try the toll-free number. And a note of caution: Poking around in electrical wiring is risky and if you're not an electrician you probably wouldn't recognize aluminum wiring anyway, so if you want your own home checked out please contact a knowledgeable electrician. Trouble signs associated with aluminum wiring problems include: --Warm ? switches or receptacle face plates. --Strange or distinctive odor of the smell of burning plastic in the vicinity of a receptacle or switch. --Flickering of lights not traceable to appliances or obvious external causes. These general "symptoms" suggest trouble anyway, so try preventative medicine and call an electrician. And if you find aluminum wiring is at fault, call the Product Safety commission at 800 - 638 - 2666. That will help everybody and its toll-free. ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY FOR A Voice' IN PRODUCT STANDARDS The commission has also opened its doors to public "volunteers" who want to help in the development of mandatory product safety standards for such items as lawn mowers, extension cords, swimming pool slides, matches, architectural glass, all kinds of things. By "going public," the commission hopes to get the Seamless Aluminum Gutters & Downspouts in Six Colors • No more peeling or flaking • Heavy, durable alumi num • Cut down on maintenance problems • hxpert installation Call For Free Estimate 653-9720 385-9427 iutters Unlimited McHenry MBI TAVICE KHWBI SERVICE KITCUBI ieWlfe KITCHEN SBRVCE ON THE BEACH ...
