PAGE • . PLAINDEALKRJrRIDAY. NOVEMBER t. 1974 EARL WALSH So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR I It is Halloween time again. That's an evening when you eat standing up. The front door bell hngs and rings. We get fun out of the small ones all dressed up to scare us with "Trick or a treat". In our day, the kids didn't give you a choice. It was a trick and run like h--. Of course, there were no police cars to cover the city and there was plenty of time to tip over an outhouse or hang the front gale in a free. Percy Lodtz tells about the time a group of young fellows struggled hard to tip over an outdoor facility behind the City Hall. When it went over, they looked up and saw our Dad (McHenry Policeman for more than 40 years). Percy claims they didn't get bawled out. Their only order was, "Well, boys, now that you got it down, put it up again." They couldn't hoist it up so had to hire George "Frenchy" Meyers the next day to do the restoration job. How they did it, we wouldn't know, but boys used to tie ropes to church bells and ring them from across the street. There were some great tricks, but not much destruc tion of property. Put our teeth into a slice of special bread baked by Grandma (Mrs. Will) Blake. Man - that was eatin! We like those old fashioned girls. We get a little scared when they talk about switching to the metric system. Haven't learned all the old measurements and tables yet. This coming football game with Zion-Benton Friday night is taking on all the proportions of a Super-Bowl contest. The winner is almost certain to go into the state playoffs, something new in high school football. The Zeebees rate a notch higher, but that means nothing to this '74 Warrior team. The home team has a great defense and some big guns on the of fensive side. Dick Rabbitt wants another prediction. OK. We predict that the Zeebees will set their defense to zero in on George Hansen and our other backfield men will give them a surprise. And the Warriors to pull an upset in 9 squeaker. Muhammed Ali boasted "I am the greatest." Then he knocked out the champion George Forman. Maybe Ali is the greatest. Remember the good old days when you pulled into a gas station and instead of saying "fill er up", you would ask for 5 gallons or a dollar's worth? WKDYS 7:15-9:3<T SAT-SUN 5:00 7:15 9:30 M VIVID COLON with this By Dick Rabbitt With the possibility of a State Playoff spot in the offering, the Fighting Warriors of Coach Bill Day lock horns with the Zion ZeeBees tonight in the home final. A Zion-Warrior game in itself should be worth the price of admission, but the incentive of a playoff berth is something that should have all Warrior fans at the game tonight. , This game will match the high scoring record breaking Zion offense, against the toughest defense in the North Suburban Conference. The ZeeBees have scored 296 pts, breaking the old record of 260 of the 1968 Barrington Broncos. Coach Leroy Cliff's eleven is led by senior quarterback Butch Monaghan, who has passed for 20 touchdowns and scored 5 himself. Chris Hayes a halfback is a favorite target of Monaghan's and has gathered in 10 touchdown passes. Other Zion players who bear watching are Bob Haru, a i halfback who has scored 6 touchdowns, Len LaBelle, and end Tom Stockton. The ZeeBees great kicker who doubles as a middle linebacker, Scott Roe, has already booted 35 extra points for a new conference record. However, the Warriors should not be overlooked. They have a couple of offensive threats of their own. In George Delores picked the 9-10 split and Bret the 5-7 split. Won 3 - Lost 1 Team No. 8 - The Jels - Eva had high game 184 and high series 455. Hansen who has gained nearly 900 yds and scored 15 touchdowns and Ev Klapperich perhaps the fastest man in the conference who has averaged nearly 25 yds per pass from quarterback Steve Kaspryzk. The defense which has given up an average of 7 points a game, shutting out their last two opponents, North Chicago and Dundee. Barry, Roberts, Voight, Jacobs, Dix, Dulberg, Eppel, are the mainstays of the Warrior defensive line. The secondary of Hansen, Kaspryzk, Nuss, Rode, Lane, will have to be at their best to stop the passing attack of Monaghan. The Warriors are confident that they can upset the ZeeBees and from all reports it should be a whale of a game. Don't miss it. It has been 12 years since a Warrior eleven has won 6 games in a season. Let's all turn out and cheer them on to win number 7, and hopefully a bid to the State playoffs. Last week for the first time my crystal ball didn't crack even one little bit. I picked all 5 winners, and for the season have a 77 percent average, which is about average picking for the tough North Suburban. This week I am going against all odds and pick the Warriors Pts 150 90 63 60 54 20 13 35 277 19 Mrs. Doukas' fifth grade class are the soccer champions at Edgebrook school. (Dawn Douglas - absent). for the upset of the year in defeating the ZeeBees. I look for our seniors to close out their final home game in a blaze of glory. In a tossup I'll pick Crown over Mundelein. Neither team has much of an offense, so will give the nod to Crown under the lights. Another tossup Dundee at Libertyville, I'll pick the Cats, they do have some kind of an organized offense. Lake Forest over North Chicago (Scouts too tough for the Warhawks). Barrington over Crystal Lake. This could be another good game, and the Tigers could give the Broncos some trouble. I hope.
