A STINGING SIGHT - This hornet's nest hangs 3 feet in a tree near theCicchini home, 3711 W. Timothy lane, Edgebrook Heights. The photographer went close enough to catch this fine view of the nest Ifefore hanging a "Do Not Disturb" sign. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Wounds That Really Hurt A Growing Child Parents sometimes worry about the wrong things in their children. Physically, a child is much tougher than we think. We fret about accidents, wet feet, missed meals, and in fections. Indeed, given the incredible array of accidents and diseases a child is exposed to, it is something of a minor miracle that any child survives to age 10. That most of them do stfrVfve is compelling evidence of-a child's physical hardiness and adaptability. It is the emotional arena that a child is vulnerable to influences that we may be scarcely aware of. The experiences that cripple children the most (and often permanently if repeated many times) are not falls from trees or viruses or occasional deficient meals. They are, rather, the destructive emotional climate of a home: the hostilities, the in consistencies of mood, the negative labels, and the un certainties and anxieties about themselves which parents project upon their children, often without even being aware of it. I remember, for example, working with a mother who was, in many ways, a fine mother in the sense of being involved and concerned about whether her two children were eating enough vegetables, getting their homework done, and so on. Unquestionably, she cared for her children, but she was also slowly but surely (also unwittingly) undermining their sense of personal adequacy and self-confidence by giving them negative messages and ego- damaging labels. She would, for example, say things of the following sort to her children (remember, she loved them; she did not intend to hurt them): "Alice, now finish your carrots. You're skinny enough as it is." "John, have you finished your homework? You're not exactly the brightest one in class, you know." In many ways, this is an illustration of a classic "anxious mother" concerned about the effects of diet and school on her children. Un fortunately, she was also doing psychic harm to them in ways that all the carrots and good grades in the world could not protect them from.
