DEVIL S TOWER, WYOMING (Father William O. Hanner, rector emeritus of Holy Comforter church, Episcopal, Kenilworth). Thursday morning Sept. 26, we got back on the road to the East. There followed a couple of days of ordinary driving. This was the time of our visit to the town that is poisoning itself, Kellogg, Idaho, (lead mining- lead poisoning). If we had been more knowledgeable about Montana we might have had a better time and gone to Great Falls or Helena but were ignorant, so that night found us in the home of Senator Mike Mansfield, Butte, Montana. Butte sits on a hill of copper ore. It is a wealthy spot but it in no way resembles Miami Beach, Acapulco, the Lido nor the Cosa de Ora. It just isn't a resort town. Of yore, it was whispered to me, the town was "wide open". I would not recommend Butte for a rest cure though it seems to grow pretty good senators. The next morning it was snowing - not too badly but enough to make it slick. We crossed Elk pass at an altitude of 6,000 feet plus. At noon we were in a wee town with a big restaurant. If you can find where the locals eat you will do pretty well. We drove all day long. Evening found us in Sheridan, Wyoming, in our good motel with the king size beds and the indoor putting green. We had missed having dinner at the Cody Inn, where Buffalo Bill had stayed at one time. It is an historic shrine now. Meals are served. There is an old bar - polished, fine looking, that was hauled in by wagon many years ago. Here we dined in an historic perspective. The hotel was first built to let cross- c o n t i n e n t a l r a i l r o a d passengers spend a night here while the train laid up during darkness. We saw Dale and Berta Kinley next morning and had breakfast with them. It was Berta's birthday. Seems like all our friends keep having them -- this is of course preferable to not having them anymore. The next morning we were on our way East again. Did not make much in the way of miles covered though we did get to Rapid City, South Dakota. All my life I had wanted to see Devil's Tower. It lies in northeast Wyoming about 40 miles north of the road between Gillette and Sundance. Devil's Tower is a national monument. It is the first national monument and was set up by President Roosevelt I Devil's Tower is the lava hardened core of an ancient volcano. Issides have eroded away over the millennia so that the nude core rises 855 feet above its base and over 1,200 feet above the surface of the Belle Fourche river hard by. Its picture is in many a geology text book. It sits upon a pine covered rise built by the refuse of the erosion of the old mountain. It rises straight up, its walls vertical. Over 2,000 persons have climbed it. The day we were there a ranger let us use his high powered field glasses. High up where the naked eye misses them you could see two climbers.
