> PAGE • - PLAINDEALER-FRIDAY, NOVEMBER IS, I§74 EARL WALSH So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR. Steve Thompson andCindy Miotto are all dressed for an afternoon of snowmobttlng. The Greenwood Gremlins 4-H club are sponsoring a snowmobile safety clinic. Steve and Cindy are members of the club and are helping organize the clinic. One of the features of the clinic will be a display of proper wearing apparel for snowmobiling. It appears as though Cindy could use some pointers on dressing for snowmobiling. Dress boots, long scarf, and no gloves are not what one would recommend for a snowmobile ride. The Snowmobile Safety Clinic will be held on Saturday, November 16,1 to 3:30 p.m. at the Greenwood Methodist church, Greenwood. Anyone who is nine years or older is invited to attend. You do not need to be a 4-H-er. 12TH ANNUAL KING KORN TOURNAMENT NOV. 2d-30, 1974 WINNER No. 1-Nd. 2 » 4tS3 (SAT.) 9:00 A.M. (SAT.) GAME No. 1 WINNER No. 1 -- 1:30 (FRI.) ROCHELLE 1:15 (SAT.) He packed his bags and left the team before the season ended and told his teammates he was retiring. Now he is reported as saying he is coming back. Looks like it is time for the management to decide who is running the show. Let's send Allen to the Cubs and get even with them for that Santo trade Contributed: McHenry has always been known for its athletes but sometimes there are those who remain hidden. For instance, in 1932 a young man set the record for the l/z mile at the Oak Park Relay Races !(a record that has never been broken) AND he lives in McHenry! AND he's still at it. Yep, Dick Barrows was seen sprinting down Front Street last Wednesday, AND he won! His speed was AMAZING, even to the young girl chasing him. It was a real race, the winner got a magnum of champagne. Were you afraid of the girl, Dick, or were you thirsty? That fine old Vet, Paul Leubscher, Commander of McHenry Barracks, saw his first big league baseball game way back in 1905. That must have been just after Abner Doubleday laid out the first diamond. Jerry Bellak (385-5705) is still looking for applicants for Men's Basketball. Now is the time to make a big decision. Do you put your snow tires on or wait for the first big storm when everybody else is rushing for service. Our government has finally decided we are in a recession. Most of us could have told them quite a while ago. That's like somebody telling us our hairline is receding. Martin Smith won't be calling on us to talk baseball any more. We went to his wake Wed nesday night. He lived to the ripe old age of 89 years. Martin lived in St. Louis the last 47 years so naturally became a Cardinal baseball fan. When he came to McHenry for a visit, we always told him how we hoped to see our White Sox play his Cardinals in a World Series. But, mostly, we talked about McHenry teams when they played in the Wattles Driving Park. Fans lived all week for the big game on Sunday. There wasn't any television to distract us. Good ball players were imported in those days and bets were heavy. Martin's barber shop and pool room where Ruck's Hardware is now located was a popular spot. That was the spot where World Series results were posted on a board inning by inning as they were telegraphed to the C&NW depot. Bob Weber was the runner between the depot and Martin's shop. Martin wasn't able to come to McHenry the last few years and we missed those chats. He loved sports. Mostly baseball. So we got along just fine. Again we asked all the coaches of the high schools in the county to submit names of their players they thought worthy of the honor. As in the past we had wonderful cooperation from these coaches, and we hope in the future to get all the county newspapers behind this fine project. Because of our location, it is felt among the coaches that our athletes do not get the recognition they deserve. In a somewhat humble way, we hope that the athletes named, will feel that their playing football this past season has not been overlooked. From the 33 players named to the team plus the 12 honorable mention, one can see that there is plenty of size and talent in the county. George Hansen a halfback of the Warriors rushed for 964 yds and scored 16 touchdowns and was an all choice in the North Suburban. Bob Eppel, who was a mainstay of the defensive unit, tops in the league. Dan Voight and Mike Roberts key linemen in the Warrior offense and defense. Ev Klapperich the senior speedster who averaged 20 yd per catch from the passing arm of Steve Kaspryzk. Jim Stalo one of the leading scorers in the North Suburban from Crystal Lake. He along with fine defensive player Ross Toresi were the backbone of the Tiger team under Coach Bill Mack. Another Tiger who was a terror, Kurt Schafer, the big end. Richmond had probably the finest halfback in the county. Mike Curelo a 5*11 180 lb scatback ran for 8 961 yds and played in only 6 games. Mike averaged 5.7 yd per carry, and was sidelined for three games with an ankle injury. Marian Central, although not winning a game, had an outstanding quarterback in John Craig. Young John threw for over 1,000 yds this season, and that's a lot of yards in tossing the football. Huntley had a couple of Little 8 and Elgin Area players. Mark Brettschneider a defensive back, and Shane Jordy a 6'0 245 junior tackle. Harvard had Terry Perkins represented. Terry averaged 28 yds per catch in 13 attempts for 335 yds. Neil Schultz a 6'0 center was another representative of the Hornet squad. Woodstock had Luke Lohmeyer a fine senior tackle. He was a first team selection in the Northwest Suburban, and was Capt. of the Streaks. Jim Rochford another Streak named to the Northwest Suburban as a defensive back. Randy Stock an end caught 27 passes for 437 yds for the Streaks this year. Tom Burke from Cary Grove the M.V.P. of his team and an all Northwest selection at uarterback, along with Randy einhans the Most Valuable Defensive Player award at Cary. My good friend Rod Poppe at Marengo, who lost 3 games this year, and that is bad for Rod had Dave Decker a center at 5'10 and 230 lbs., along with a safety Glen Edie among his choices. I think any coach would like to take the 33 players selected and start the season tomorrow. Whether they are from a big or little school, the talent is there, and McHenry County does not have to take a back seat to any other area. qui K1 ALL McHENRY COUNTY FOOTBALL SQUAD Name School Pos.
