Blkalls Tills Decision Not To Sook Appointment State School Supt. Michael J. Bakalis announced last week that he is no longer a candidate for the appointed post of state superintendent of education. "I have given this much thought over the past month, and I feel it is in my best in terests professionally and in the best interests of the state board of education that I with draw," he said in making the announcement. Bakalis noted that the state board and superintendent must be "mutually compatible." "The board has developed no philosophical positions on major educational issues and consequently could give me no assurance that programs 1 deeply believe in would be continued." Bakalis said. Other reasons he noted for withdrawing were that the board could present no clearly defined description of the position and a feeling among some board members that his election on a partisan ticket was a negative factor, an issue he said "never allowed my educational record to be fairly evaluated."
