V PAGE I • PLAINDEALER-WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 11, 1974 be submitted over and over until they pass. They ignore the proven principle that con solidation or expansion of present facilities represents the most economical and efficient way of meeting future needs. "2)-You will have no more control over a high school in Johnsburg than you do over the one in McHenry! Proponents claim that you will. This is untrue. The present board conducts its most important business in 'executive sessions'," locking out ob servers. Most parents rightly oppose the lack of graded report cards, the absence of systematic discipline, the substitution of 'life adjustment' courses for academic courses, and the extreme 'in dividualization' that minimizes teacher effectiveness in the classroom. Yet these practices are the hallmark of the Johnsburg schools and reflect the views of the superintendent and the school board. If this administration runs a high school, all these things will characterize it. You wiU have no more say about it than*you do now! "3)-A high school in John sburg would not provide superior discipline to that presently existing in McHenry! PUBLIC PULSE (The Plaindealer invites the public to use this column as an expression of their views on subjects of general interest in our community. THE JOHNSBURG SCHOOL '^Editor: "A petition is being cir culated supporting a feasibility study for a unit school district in Johnsburg. It gives the go- ahead for planning a high school to be built in Johnsburg and managed by the current Johnsburg administration. For the good of our children's education, you should consider the following points before signing it. "1)-A high school in John sburg will cost you plenty! Proponents claim it will not raise your taxes. They do not talk about bond issues that will The petition's proponents claim dissatisfaction with discipline in McHenry. Would a school in Johnsburg improve the situation? Consider the present state of the Johnsburg schools in this regard: " . a continuous incidence of unpunished locker theft " . toleration of general student disrespect for faculty " . incidence of injury to students in play not properly supervised " . lack of defined dress and behavior codes absence of defined penalties for specific types of misbehavior " . general policy of non- expulsion, even for the most serious misconduct " . student evaluation of teachers used by ad ministrators to grade teacher performance discipline through motivation lacking due to removal of competition for grades " . administrative advocacy of "individualized" discipline "It is important that the building of a high school in Johnsburg be defeated. The cost is prohibitive, and it could mean financial disaster to many members of the com munity in these inflationary times. Even if we could afford it, the present Johnsburg ad ministration cannot and will not give us our dollar's worth of education. Best regards, "Rick Kemmer" .PARENT APATHY "Editor: "For the second year, McHenry high school - East campus, has organized a Parent Advisory committee. Our initial meeting of the year was held on Nov. 14. To our disappointment, after adequate publicity, only eight parents were interested and chose to attend the meeting. "Our next meeting will be held on Thursday evening, Dec. 12, at 7:30 p.m. in the East campus library. We sincerely ho|>e that many more parents of East campus students will choose to attend. We all realise the many problems high schools face in today's society. Our school desires parental participation and input. The Parent Advisory committee is one way that any interested parent can participate in school activities and truly have a voice in helping make school decisions. "East campus houses in excess of 1,200 ninth and tenth grade students. Is it possible that only eight parents are interested in serving in ad visory capacity? "Gary M. Fields, "Principal" .
