Bridge was played with honors being won by Mrs. Gordon Stringer and Mrs. Anton Schneider. The big mill at Richmond is a mass of ruins following a fire which threatened the town on Friday night. Richmond is without fire protection of any kind of fire departments were called from Lake Geneva, McHenry, Fox Lake and Genoa City. G.F. Brand, the owner, purchased the building a* year ago for $12,000. The mill was an old landmark and was built in 1844. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Fisher have moved to the Frisby farm north of Terra Cotta. Epworthians from McHenry are planning to enjoy Watch Night service on New Year's Eve at Volo. Young people from Richmond, Crystal Lake, Wauconda, McHenry, Ingleside, Grayslake, Lake Villa and Volo will join in their Watch Night services. The high school students and members of the faculty enjoyed a kid's party at the high school gym. All were dressed and acted with the spirit of the occasion. The fun began in a game of "Drop the Han dkerchief" and Santa appeared with candy and gifts. The remainder of the evening was spent in dancing to the strains of the popular Sun Dodgers orchestra. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Dec. 27, 1934) The Lily Lake Ladies league held its meeting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Weber Tuesday evening. Cards and bunco were enjoyed. On Friday William Etten treated the ladies to a sleigh ride at which time Christmas baskets were delivered to the sick and unemployed. A cold snap struck McHenry on Christmas night sending the temperature to 10 to 15 degrees below zero. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Michels have moved from the Mat Weber home on Riverside drive to one of the Skidmore farms. Lester Sherman, Alvin Peterson and Arthur Krause will represent McHenry on the January petit jury. Mrs. Elmer Freund en tertained a party of friends Sunday afternoon at a miscellaneous shower in honor of her sister-in-law, Mrs. Homer FitzGerald of Crystal Lake, who was formerly Miss Flora Freund. Father Claud Freund, son of Mrs. Frank Freund of this city, has been appointed pastor of a church at Hanover and com menced his new duties last week. He has been chaplain at the St. Charles hospital Aurora, for several years. All graduates of the McHenry high school who are interested in holding a general ialumnae banquet next year in order to establish an alumnae organization of the high school are requested to get in touch with any of the following. Dorothy Fisher, Walter Brefeld, Alma Justen, Alvera Antholz or Kenneth N. Boley. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Jan. 5, 1950) Something new in the way of entertainment for the younger crowd was instituted Dec. 31 when the preteenage club held its meeting with Mary Kauss co-owner of the shop. The club is open to seventh and eighth grade pupils of the local schools. McHenry's first new baby of 1950 was born at St. Therese hospital, Waukegan, to Mr. and Mrs. Edward Todd on Jan. 1. The baby's mother is the for mer Elaine Bradley of this city. Do you remember forty-one years ago when R.I. Overton opened the Riverside livety where the George Kramer residence now stands on the Fox River. It was in January 1909. One year later he opened the West side livery on the site of the present Freund gas station. Clarence Anglese of the McHenry Community high school faculty was one of three delegates of the county to at tend the ninety-sixth annual meeting of the Illinois Education Association held at the Hotel Sherman in Chicago Dec. 28 to 30. William Kinsala, son of Henry Kinsala of Waukegan road, McHenry, has been ac cepted as a student at Wood bury college, Los Angeles, selecting executive interior decorating as his major. Mrs. Leila Merrett of Woodstock spent the New Year weekend with Mrs. Annabel Aicrter. They were Chicago callers on Friday. Announcement has been made of the marriage on Dec. 23 at the Community Methodist church of Miss Patricia Madden of Johnsburg and Mr. Charles E. Wilder of Fox Lake. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Wayne Price. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Dec. 31, 1964) John Behrendt of Lilymoor was awarded a citation for bravery. The local resident was honored for his part in the capture of a bandit at the Prospect Plaza Bank in Mount Prospect. He courageously recovered an estimated $3,500 from a bank thief. But last Wednesday, Betty found a two tone brown athletic bag there, complete with gym clothes, underwear, etc. Being a con cerned mother who realizes the cost of replacing such items, she is anxious to return the bag record of $68.5 million established in the comparable quarter of 1952, Vincent Barreca, president, has an nounced. to its owner. If it's yours, please call Betty at 653-9023. CHRISTMAS PROGRAM Just want to mention that we think Perry Como's Christmas Program was the finest of its kind this season. It was an hour of delightful entertainment and his story of the first Christmas with the singing of all those old carols, jolted us out of our "hurry up and join the crowd for a commercialized 1974 Christmas" doldrums, and made us remember why there is a Christmas at all.
