STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Thought For Food Tips For The Homemaker U you plan to buy an electric slow-cooker for yourself or as a gift, you need not be at the mercy of advertisers. Consider these shopping pointers from Pat Frank, University of Illinois Home Economics ad viser, to decide among the many brands and models available. The location of the heating coils is the most important fe&ture of an electric slow- cooker. If the heating coils are located only in the base of the cooker, little difference exists between using the cooker and putting a heavy gauge pot on the electric range at the warm temperature. After determining the location of the heat source, inspect the lid, says Miss Frank. A see-through lid allows you to check on the food without lifting it. A loss of too much moisture and heat from the cooker may cause the food to dry out or burn. In addition, the loss of heat from lifting the lid too often may increase cooking time. Cleaning ease also rates as an important feature. Some cookers contain removable inner cook wells and removable heat-control units so that they Uflltt THE MCHSNRT PLAINDEALER Established 1875 3812 Wwt Elm Street Phone 385-0170 McHenry, Illinois 60050 Published Every Wednesday ft Friday at McHenry, Illinois Second Class Postage Paid at McHenry, Illinois By McHENRY PUBLISHING COMPANY Larry E. Some slow cookers feature an automatic shift in the position of the control dials that lowers the temperature from high heat. This feature shortens cooking time by bringing the contents to a boil on the high setting and then automatically adjusting to a low setting to continue cooking. The automatic shift is especially important on slow- cookers that offer an extra-high heat setting for browning or deep fat frying. What in the world did that little girl mean by the prayer, "forgive us our Christmases?" Here's what I think. I think that as December 25 got nearer and nearer, she sensed a hurry and anxiety that threatened to rob the holidays of their real joy. You know what I mean. You've seen kids slapped and pushed in crowded stores, as their harried parents strain every nerve to "get ready" for Christmas. What these parents don't realize is that children want unhurried moments just to watch and listen to the color and music of Christmas. They want homes where there is at least a resemblance of sanity and calm. Expensive gifts, and gaudily wrapped presents, and mountains of mouthwatering goodies will not replace a child's hunger for security and warmth and un derstanding. Prices are high this Christmas of 1974. But the price of what I'm talking about is still the same. What is that price? It's whatever it costs us to share ourselves with those we love the most. Otherwise, we'll need to imitate the prayer of the little girl who begged: ".. .and forgive us our Christmases, as we forgive those who Christmas against us." D*4 ILJ. Christmas Eve In many countries of the world December 24th is as much fun as the 25th. In England Christmas carols are sung on Christmas Eve. In Scandinavia and in many American homes a family dinner the afternoon of the 24th ushers in Christ mas. The custom of lighting candles (now lights in most cases) in windows on Christmas Eve originated, in this country, in Boston. The Santa Claus legend comes from Germany but it has been expanded and changed in America, with greater emphasis on toys for children. And Christmas Eve night, of course, is the high pitch of anticipation for millions of youngsters. Many churches have special Christmas Eve services. Some church choirs still go about singing carols on Christ mas Eve. The great Christmas rush, unfortunately, reaches its hectic climax for millions of parents on the 24th. If one can plan ahead and enjoy a leisurely Christmas Eve, it can bring as much pleasure, fulfillment and reward as the 25th.
