c And Bits Described By Pastor On Gulf Coast You want a few samples of life on the Gulf Coast friend? OK, read on now that I have your attention. I went into a bank here in Ocean Springs yesterday to cash a traveler's check. The young lady who was teller was an obliging sort of gal so I asked for a 1975 calendar. "Oh!" said she, "we don't have calendars but would you like a nice orange? We give oranges at Christmas." She handed me a great big orange such as you pay 10 to 15 cents for around home. It is so large 1 shall halve it and eat it with a spoon. Then the bank of my friend, Glen Swetman, is advertising that if you come in the 23rd or 24th they will give you a shrimp cocktail. There used to be a bank in Wilmette where we had our account, that made the "Season" bright with coffee and Christmas cookies during the holidays. Some one drop me a postal card and tell me what is on the menu at the local banks in McHenry. I dropped in at the Biloxi library the other day to browse while the garage worked on my car. The good ladies who run the library have many friends. They visit with them in study and reading disturbing tones. You cannot miss snatches -- one I caught was - "My mother used to say thank God He didn't give me all the fool things I used to pray for!" (Clergy, here is a note to comment on next Sunday.) To pass the time down here and get in on cheaper food I joined the Open Mess at the Officers' club here at Keesler field, the great air base. I am a retired Air Force officer. We stopped by for dinner last Wednesday and as the Happy Hour was on the wane dropped in for a martini before dinner. The place was emptying out but remnants of the hors d'oeuvres were still on the table. A very genteel and wary mouse ap proached from the sidelines for a bash at the crumbs that had fallen on the polished floor. He took off for the sidelines leaving behind a squealing waitress and delighted officers. After we got down here I wrote a shop in McHenry asking for some things we needed; they were shipped down by United Parcel and unfortunately collect. (My credit really isn't that bad). However, the only address I gave was General Delivery for I expected the shipment by parcel post. One day when I was up town shopping, the United Parccel man was making a delivery to a shop I was in. He knew everyone there and finally he asked the lady - "Do you know any Hanner around here? I have a collect package here for Hanner, general delivery." J How we both happened to hit that shop at the same time I cannot figure out but there we were. I gladly paid the charge and hurried home with the needed articles to Mrs. Han- ner's relief, delight and amazement. It is all in the day's work, I suppose. I found there was no Episcopal chaplain at Keesler field so now I am taking care of the Episcopalians there and giving them a service each week. This I am happy to do. The housekeeper springs to life in Mrs. H. It is warm and mild and sunny today so she is washing our four windows, 66 degrees up town. The morning paper carries the news that an airman from Keesler field was walking along Pass road near Edgewater drive in Biloxi, a car called "look out" and when he looked they shot at him twice woun ding him on the lower lip. He has provided an exclusive Weather-By-Phone service by agreement with the General Telephone company for residents of McHenry county. For county residents the telephone number to call is 1- 728-8123; for Wonder Lake, 8- 8123. During this holiday season the weather forecast is prefaced by a holiday greeting for callers, by Mr. Mathews himself. Another service is Gallery of Homes, a national referral service for folks planning to SERVICE NEWS move into and away from McHenry county. The service has 1,300 offices and 15,000 real estate sales representatives for the convenience of both buyers and sellers of real estate. The library at Keesler field is open and used terribly hard - it tends to be more technical and there are few new books. The library in Biloxi, to which I referred, is well equipped both in late fiction and non-fiction. Here in Ocean Springs the local library is a branch of the county library service and if I can get over to Pascagoula where the head library is we can get at least one picture to hang on our bare walls to keep company with our little Christmas tree and its wooden ornaments. Have a good healthy, happy, solvent 1975, everybody! He was pictured with two faces, one looking ahead, the other backwards. It is certainly appropriate for Jan uary, the first month of the year, to be derived from the name of Janus. January first is an ideal time to look back, but it is far more important to look ahead. Worry, regret, disappointment and other negative thoughts of the past can and should be replaced with positive thoughts of hope, faith, trust and confidence as we look ahead. The New Year represents opportunity. Challenge. We can only make the most of it if we show less concern for what lies behind us and intelligently motivate our thinking and action to that which lies ahead. As we sincerely say "Happy New Year" to you, we fervidly hope you glance back to the past ONLY to chart a new course ahead, cheerfully facing the full view of all possible pleasantries in the year ahead. Wed nesdays - Holy Eucharist 9:30 a.m. Friday - Holy Eucharist 9:30 a.m. Why celebrate the end of one year and the beginning of the next? It seems a strange custom, yet there is a good reason for it. Few, if any of us, have come even close to perfection in the year just ending. So we look ahead toward 365 brand- new days, blank pages in the next chapter of our lives. What will we do with them? On the eve of a New Year, most of us certainly have the desire to try harder, to be better people. But even while we are saying, "Off with the old and on with the new," we are also clinging to the good in the days gone by. As we renew old friendships, we thank God for those friends, for the Faith he has given us, for life itself. And, in the midst of revelry, we start the year the best way of all: We go to church.
