Reveal Exciting Sports Stories In '74 Review ^ JANUARY To start off the new year, S.I.H. was fined for things he said about the Cubs by his fellow Rotarians. The Warriors lost to Joliet East, 54-53, in the Kankakee tourney. It was the second one point loss in a' row for the Warriors in the tournament as they were defeated 56 to 55 by Bradley. North Chicago and Wood­ stock defeated the Warriors in the Waukegan Frosh holiday tournament. The freshmen basketball team won their fifth straight game by defeating previously unbeaten Crown 54- to 36. S.I.H. was thrilled with the game of the century when Notre Dame beat Alabama by one point. The McHenry swimmers set a new record in the 200 Medley Relay at the Libertyville in­ vitation with a fine time of 1:49:1. The Warriors won first place in the 10 event tourney. Mary Etten, president of the McHenry Chapter of White Sox Fan clubs, says that S.I.H. had to accept Eddie Bimbo into the club. The McHenry junior high Trojan basketball team cap­ tured the American Legion tournament. The Frosh wrestlers tied for sixth place at the Barrington , meet. FEBRUARY The McHenry high Warriors split a pair of weekend games, losing to Mundelein, 65 to 63 and defeating Marian Central, 71 to 66. The freshmen wrestlers tied Mundelein, 30 to 30. Forfeiting three matches for a total of 18 points was just too much to overcome and the "Rassling Warriors" went down to defeat to Mundelein, 38 to 11. McHenry swimmers sub­ merged Elgin Larkin, 113 to 51. Local girls showed class in the state bowling tourney. Kadisak Tile, The Happy Five and Bob & Ron's Town Tap of McHenry had high scores. The Warrior freshmen staged a 4th quarter rally to defeat Dundee, 47-46. ' Libertyville Wildcats, defeated the Warriors, 74-54. and left the Warriors in a four- way tie for the North Suburban conference. The Freshmen wrestlers won two matches, one frqm Antioch 36 to 21 and Libertyville, 39-12. The high school swimmers defeated DeKalb, 107-64 and Woodstock, *50-34. The McHenry Junior high Trojan eighth grade basketball team won two conference games, from the undefeated Hickory Hill, 52-44 and from Cary, 58-39. The Warriors dropped out of a first place tie when they were defeated by North Chicago, 64- 53. The next night they defeated Kaneland Five, 71-63. The "Rassling Warriors" defeated the North Chicago "Warhawks" for the first McHenry victory in the 10 year rivalry between the two schools. The frosh-soph wrestlers defeated North Chicago, the sophs, 36-27 and the freshmen, 61-6. The freshmen cagers defeated North Chicago, 54-45. The swimmers lost to Lake Forest 42-41. MARCH Vance Roth received the most valuable award from Coach Mike Shanahan in swimming. Jim Heard, a 1970 graduate of McHenry high school, closed out a brilliant career at Huron college, Huron, S.D. Jim set a new all time Huron college individual scoring record for a single game when he scored 40 points in a 82 to 81 loss to Dakota Wesleyan. He was the leading scorer in the S.D.I.C. conference with a 29.2 average. Two local athletes, Richard Freund and Edwin Choate, have been named to the Prep All-American football program for 1973-74. Sixty-five honored at basketball award night, Steve Himpelmann, was awarded the free throw trophy. S.I.H. and wife spent an enjoyable ten days with the White Sox in Florida. Walt Freund took over the duties of the column and some Cub fans in town thought S.I.H. had flipped his lid when they read such glowing reports of the Cubs. APRIL The Warrior nine defeated Carmel; 7-2 in the season's opener. The Sophs also chalked up a victory against Carmel, 2-0 while losing to Larkin, 2-1. The McHenry Sophomores ran their record to 4 and 1 when they won three games. They defeated Cary-Grove, 2 to 1; Woodstock, twice, 6 to 4 and 13 to 2. The Warriors split a doubleheader with Grant, losing the first game 3-2 and winning the second, 5-2. The Freshmen team took it on the chin three times, losing to Cary-Grove, 11 to 1 and twice to Woodstock, 11 to 8 and 14 to 10. McHenry's inexperienced tennis team showed some promise when they lost a close match to Lake Zurich, 3 to 2 The Warriors won two games, defeating Wauconda by a score of 8 to 7, and a win over Crystal Lake 6 to 5. McHenry's Frosh-Soph tennis team lost their first match when Carmel defeated them 3-2. The Warriors lost to Carmel 5 to 0. The Sophomore baseball team beat Wauconda, 4-2 and0 lost to Crystal Lake 2-0. The Freshmen team split a pair, beating Wauconda 16 to 3 and losiqg to Crvstal Lake 11 to 6. MAY The golf team won its opening game over Grant, 196-240. Warriors split a doubleheader at Lake Forest, losing 5 to 3 then winning by the same score, 5 to 3. The Sophomores lost to Lake Forest 9 to 7 and then won 13-5. The Freshmen lost twice to Lake Forest. The Frosh-Soph track team won an easy triangular meet over Mundelein and Antioch, with 88 points to Antioch's 64 and Mundelein with 25. The varsity thinclads easily defeated Mundelein and An­ tioch with McHenry, 71, An­ tioch, 56, and Mundelein, 50. Senior Rick Freund broke a record for pole vaulting in a dual meet between Libertyville and the Warriors who were defeated by a score of 75 to 66. Six unearned runs by the Dundee team paved the way for a victory over the Warriors, 10- 6. The Sophomore team won from Dundee 5 tc 1. The Sophomore track squad lost to Libertyville, 85-56. MCHS trackmen whipped Barrington 78 to 63. The Sophomores won 79-61. The varsity tennis team dropped two matches, Barrington and Elgin. The Sophomores split their mat­ ches, losing to Barrington and winning at Elgin. Warriors defeated Elgin, 11 to 10 and won a doubleheader from Mundelein. The Sophomores defeated Elgin. The Crystal Lake Tigers defeated the McHenry Warriors 67 to 60 in a triangular meet. The McHenry Gdlfers beat Grayslake, but lost to Crystal Lake and Barrington. The Sophomore baseball team split with Mundelein and the Freshmen lost a pair of games to Mundelein. The Kaneland Knights edged the McHenry Warriors for the championship of the McHenry Relays. Coach Scott's thinclads defeated Zion and Carmel in a triangular meet. The Sophomore baseball team beat Crown 4-1. The Warriors won Woodstock Invitational track meet. The golfers tied North Chicago. The McHenry high Warriors split a doubleheader at North Cnicago. They whipped Warren 8-1 The Sophomores won a pair of games from North Chicago. The Thinclads beat Dundee 83-62 in a dual meet. The McHenry high school track team won a triangular meet as they defeated North Chicago and Marian Central. McHenry girls raced past Round Lake and then lost to Lake Forest. The Warrior tennis team lost to N. Chicago, but the Sophomores won. Libertyville tennis teams beat McHenry. Jack Thomas and Barb ' Gilpin won the mixed doubles tourney. Lake Forest thinclads went down to the wire to defeat the Warriors. JUNE Freshman Bobby Buss led the McHenry Warriors to a second place finish in the Grayslake district golf meet. The young lad shot 37-38 for a 75 to tie Dave Ogrin of Waukegan for the medalist honors. Kenne Ludwig shot 37-39 to tie for third place. The Mundelein girls beat McHenry high track team 57- 47. The high school Sophomore track team placed second in the Dundee invitational. Steve Himpelmann was honored with the top area basketball men at a dinner in Elgin. The Men's 16" softball league officially opened its season. The Bavaria Haus beat Het- termann's, 13-11. Running under the most adverse weather conditions, the McHenry Sophomore track team won a thriller in the county meet. Honored for their athletic achievements at Marian Central high school's fifteenth annual spring banquet were Mike Pierce and Mitch Pr- zetacznik, co-winners of most valuable player in baseball; Gary Gilpin most valuable player in track; Bill Adams, student athlete award; Mike Tonyan, best defense in basketball; A1 May of John­ sburg, outstanding athlete award and most valuable player in basket .ball; Bill Moerschbaecher of McHenry, most improved player in basketball. The Warriors won the McHenry County Track Meet at Crystal Lake. Four trackmen went to the state finals at Charleston in­ cluding Ev. Klapperich, Rick Freund, John Mclnerney and Tim Talbot. The Libertyville Wildcats beat the Warriors twice to win conference title. McHenry high golfers closed out a very successful season by defeating Woodstock 178 to 192. Kenne Ludwig received the trophy for low total in all matches. Kenne captured third in the district tourney with a 76. In the conference Kenne placed seventh with a 37 in the rain shortened tourney. Ev Klap­ perich won the trophy for scoring the most points for the second year in a row. Rick Freund was selected as the athlete of the year. Bob Dobbertin, senior cat­ cher for the Warriors, was honored by the conference coaches by being selected on the All Conference team. He was also named most valuable baseball player. , Gary Swanson received the most valuable player award at M.C.H.S. Something different ap­ peared at the top of So I Hear. It all came about when Ed Bonslett and Jim Curran ac­ cused S.I.H. of using a picture taken 20 years ago. So Wayne Gaylord, staff photographer, took a picture with a hat covering his noggin'. The Bruins beat the Freeloaders 11 to 9 to earn the championship of the annual 16" softball tournament. In the final round of the Director's tournament played at McHenry country club Ed Buss defeated Jim Packee in Class A match. Class B winner was Dick Warfield while in Class C Jack Smithson won over Butch Meyer. Class D winner was Dick Kreuser. Linda L. Miller of McHenry and her partner, Bryan Kasper of Indiana, took first place in free dance, junior international and sophomore American in the roller skating contest. They also received the showmanship award at the end of the events. Ray Jemiola made a hole in one on the 18th green in the first round of the President's tournament. JULY In the first tournament held in the park, Tom Sharp won the shuffleboard contest, in the under 12 age group. Tim Sabatka was the victor in the 12 to 15 age group. In a doubles tournament Peter Wilt and Bob Sharp defeated Ronald Waytula and Tom Sharp. Jake's Dead End Lounge continued with their undefeated season as they slipped by Rusty Nail 4 to 3 and 9 to 1 in the in­ dustrial league 12 inch softball. Pat Vavrik shot a hole in one on the 169 yard No. 8 at Chapel Hill golf course. Cathy Connell and Donna Munyon represented McHenry high school GAA at the Nor­ thern GAA Leadership Camp at Lake Geneva. Jake's Dead End Lounge wrapped up first place in the McHenry Area Industrial League with two games remaining. They defeated Brake Parts twice, raising their undefeated record to 14 and 0. Don Howard shot a hole-in- one at the Woodstock Country club, 180 yards. Jim Leon won the free throw tournament at the City park for the 6 8 age group. AUGUST The White Sox were giving S.I.H. fits. He talked with Walt Freund daily and they wish they could manage that team. „ Phillips 66 gains a playoff spot as the McHenry Area Industrail League 12-inch softball regular season ended. Richard Matt was a third place finisher in the Amateur- built Class of the Twelfth an­ nual AC Flight rally held in Oshkosh, Wis. For the third year Chapel Hill's girls' softball team won the league championship. They defeated Jewel Mfg. of Barrington 8-5 for the cham­ pionship. As they did last year, both Pam Spengel and Toni Weber traveled to Indian Lakes, Bloomingdale, and proved their competitive spirits by turning in some fine results and again bringing home trophies. Kathleen Bolger spent a week in Sauk Valley, - Mich., in­ structing high school age girls from all over the United States in the art) of playing field hockey. The McHenry Shamrocks ended their season with an 11-3 mark, good for a second place finish in their division of the Northern Illinois Amateur league. T h e J o h n s b u r g Businessmen's softball team captured its third consecutive teenage softball league championship with a perfect 14- 0 record. Herm Zwissler is the new senior handicap club champion at McHenry Country club. He had a 54 hole net score of 210, barely nosing out Hank Leisten with 211. o McHenry high school's athletic program was under way for the new season. Eleven lettermen returned on the Warriors '74 squad. The Soph football team had 42 candidates while Cross Country had 28 candidates and more were on the way. There was a large turnout for the Frosh football squad. The Johnsburg Pigtail League had its picnic with the All-Stars playing the first place team in each division. Coach Chuck Cuda has seven returning lettermen for his 1974 fall golf season. They are senior: Kenne Ludwig, Marty Zeller "and Ed Thomas. Juniors, Bob Buenzli, Jim Burke, Lowell Kively and Sophomore, Bobby Buss. , * Jake's Dead End Lounge went through the entire 1974 season without a loss as they took the championship with two straight victories over Swanson Chalet, with an easy 13 to 2 victory in game one followed by a tense extra inning game two, 10 to 9. Ed Buss, the old master, won the club championship at McHenry Country club. This makes the eleventh time he has captured the top prize. Art Jackson was second with a 302 total and Gary Adams finished with 303. In the handicap club ' championship Dr. Jay Sayler won easily with a 72 hole total of 280, followed by Jerry Harpling and Dick Freund with 290. Hettermann's powered their way to another championship in the Men's 6 inch softball league. They finished the season with a 17 and 4 won-lost record. SEPTEMBER Carol Cooney captured the club champion title with a 54 hole play of 271 at McHenry Country club. Anna Johnson shot a hole in one on 18. 18 hole winners at McHenry Country club were Class C, Carol Bolger, low net; Carla Wright, low gross; Ethel Conway, low net; Laverne Harpling, low gross; Class A Floss O'Connell, low net. 9 hole winners included 1st flight Evelyn Guntner, low gross and Fran Herrmann, low net; 2nd flight Ann Blaney, low gross and Shirley Nye, low net. Five McHenry area karate students competed in the Kwon's Open Karate tour­ nament in Joliet. Kevin Cedergren won third place trophy for free style fighting, junior division. Other local entrants were Roger Winters, Jeff Spears and Tom Krak of McHenry and Bob Reuter of Wonder Lake. Hettermann's Old-Timers defeated Bimbo's Old-Timers, 4-3 in the 16 inch softball game. McHenry All-Stars easily defeated the Crystal Lake All- Stars, 11-3. The Black team coached by the East Campus duo of Don Seaton and Vern Peterson won the annual soap bowl battle, 6-0. The women's 16 inch league ended the season in a cham­ pionship game when Ed's Rental beat the First National Bank by a score of 13-8. The high school golf team opened its fall season with a nifty win over Grant high school, 155 to 193. Warriors won the opening game of the football season defeating Mundelein, 21-6. McHenry high golfers dropped two matches, one to Lake Forest, 151 to 162 and Elgin Larkin, 155 to 158. They got back on the winning track by beating Crystal Lake 158 to 162. The "Running Warriors" won their opening meet of the season, a double dual over Buffalo Grove and Lake Zurich. They defeated Buffalo Grove 17 to 42 and Lake Zurich 15 to 50. The Warrior gridders beat Crown, 22-0. The Sophs beat Crown 12-0. John Cunat of McHenry was a member of Wartburg college 1974 football team. Cunat is a Sophomore. The "Running Warriors" edged Larkin 27 to 28 in a thrilling meet at West Campus in the rain. MCHS Golfers won two out of three matches, defeating Grayslake and Elgin and losing to Libertyville. Seventeen-year old Dave Wickenkamp experienced that "once-in-a-lifetime" feeling on the fourth hole of the Hunter Country club at Richmond, a hole-in-one. The "Running Warriors" finished sixth in the twenty- three team Maine West in­ vitational Cross Country meet. The Warriors downed Libertyville 29-12 for third victory in a row The McHenry girls field hockey team battled Dundee to a 2-2 tie. OCTOBER With Senior John Mclnerney running his fastest time ever on the home course the McHenry "Running Warriors" won a thrilling meet over Antioch and Schaumburg. Larkin also won the, J.V. match. Barrington beat the Warriors 16 to 7 at its annual homecoming. Eleven year old Josh Winston and his father, Paul Winston, of McHenry snagged forty-seven Chinook (King) Salmon ranging from 23-30 pounds near Manitowoc, Wis. The f Woodstock "Blue Streaks" proved too much for t£oach Bill Hutchinson's '"Running Warriors" as they captured the McHenry County meet. McHenry came in second, and Cary Grove finished third. The young "Warriors" showed their heels to the rest of the field as they won easily. The MCHS Golfers were a disappointing sixth place in the District Golf Meet at Plum Tree Country club. The "Running Warriors" knocked Barrington from the unbeaten ranks by a score of 26 to 29, and they defeated Libertyville 15 to 50. The Sophomore cross country team ended the season un­ defeated. They defeated Lake Forest 18 to 43 and North Chicago 15 to 50. The MCHS Warriors walloped North Chicago for fifth win, 44-0. The sophomore team defeated North Chicago 19 to 18. Chuck Peterson, skipper of the racing sailboat "C" Hawk, and Jim McMahon won the 1974 overall season championship at Pistakee Yacht club. MCHS Harriers tied for second place in conference meet at Randall Oaks, Dundee. Barrington won the meet. John Mclnerney of Coach Bill Hutchinson's "Running Warriors" finished sixth in the Crystal Lake District meet and qualified for the state sectional at Maine East high school. The Warriors blanked Cardunals of Dundee, 21-0. Beverly Chelini, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Chelini, was a member of the 1974-75 UW- Stout's Pom Pom Squad. NOVEMBER Before a crowd of thirteen hundred fans, the ZeeBees of Zion defeated the McHenry Warriors, 13 to 7. For the second time in two years John Mclnerney won the most valuable cross country award. The most improved award went to junior Andy Oakley and the 100 percent man award went to Greg "Spider" Worm. Fred O'Halleran won the most valuable sophomore award. The Warriors ended the golf season with a 10 win-6 loss record. Warriors placed nine men on all county football team, George Hansen, Dan Voight, Bob Eppel, Ev Klapperich, John Dix, Steve Lane, Steve Kaspryzk, Mike Roberts and Neal Barry. Five McHenry Warriors were selected to the N.S.C. All Star Football team. Sharing the honors are George Hansen, Bob Eppel, Dan Voight, John Dix and Steve Kaspryzk. All are seniors. Two top awards were presented at the annual awards night. George Hansen, a senior halfback, was honored as the MVP and Bob Eppel received the best defensive player DECEMBER The McHenry Warriors^ placed third in the King Kom tourney, while setting three records, highest single game score, 102, breaking the 85 held by DeKalb in 1967, highest single game field goals by an individual, Steve Koerber with 16 point breaking the record held by West of Belvidere with 15. The third record was the highest number of field go&ls by a team for a single game, 43, breaking the record held by DeKalb'who had 34 in 1965/ The Sophomore team also placed third in the Kaneland tourney. The "Rassling Warriors" opened their home season with a bang when they walloped Grayslake 55 to 6. The Warrior Freshmen won their opener at Libertyville, 45- 32. The McHenry high swim-" ming team submerged Woodstock, 104-60. The Warriors lost a thriller to Zion Benton, 63-62. They outhustled Grant cagers, 69-54. The Sophomores lost to Zion, but defeated Grant. The Volleyball girls defeated Lake Forest. The Barrington Broncos defeated the Wrestlers, 33-15. The Rassling Warriors split a pair of matches in their annual double dual meet. They lost to Rockford Jefferson 36-15 and defeated Geneva 28-24. Rock- ford Jefferson won the meet as they defeated the Warriors and Round Lake. Jim Burke, a junior at West campus, received the most valuable player trophy for having the lowest average for all golf matches during the McHenry high school golf season. Jim averaged 41 strokes per 9 hole round, followed by Marty Zeller with 41.5, Bob Buenzli with 41.6, Ken Ludwig with 42 and Lowell Kively with 42.5. The McHenry high school Girls Varsity Volleyball team chalked up another victory by defeating a strong North Chicago team 16-14 and 15-12. Coach Pat Wirtz' Freshmen B squad won a pair of games when they defeated Lake Forest 48 to 40 and Lake Zurich 41 to 9. The Freshmen Warriors lost to Lake Forest 45 to 32. Warriors aggressive play downed Crown, 70 to 58. The Sophomore team defeated Crown 62 to 48. The Sophomores won their own holiday tour­ nament in an overtime game against Marian Central. The Swimmers lost to Libertyville 109-61. The "Fighting Warriors" pulled one out of the fire at Kankakee when they defeated Normal University high 67 to 61 in a double overtime. For the second time in three years the McHenry Warriors wound up in second place in the Kankakee Holiday tournament. They were defeated by Peoria Central by the score of 54-49.
