Fake-fur coats vary in several ways. Some resemble real^fur while others are ob viously fake. The quality of the fabrics also differ, reminds Pat Frank, McHenry county Ex tension adviser in Home Economics. For example, a soft, drapable fur-like fabric has a more natural look than a stiff, "boardy" fake fur. Blending of irregular length, iridescent man-made fibers to duplicate (he "guard hairs" and luster of natural fur produces the natural coloration. As you shop for a fake-fur coat, check the density of the pile. For warmth, resiliency and durability, the pile yarns should be close together or dense, points out Miss Frank. You can check this quality by pressing your finger into the pile and gently brushing the area with your hand. No depression or mark should remain on the fabric. The backing of the fabric should be sturdy and supple but should not stretch easily*. Whatever the pile depth, the backing should not show through too much when you bend the fabric. Coat seams should be strongly constructed, and linings should be durable and neatly attached. The type of closure - buttons or zippers - should be appropriate for the type of pile fabric and not cause matting or damage to the pile if you wear the coat often.i Check the permanent care label for specific instructions on cleaning the coat, suggests Miss Frank. UNDERSTANDING MENTAL HEALTH. a health column from the Alcohol, Drug Abuse, and Mental Health Administration U.S. Department of Health, Educatiort. and Welfare PAGE 3 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, JANUARY 17,1975 / Positive Approach "It is amazing how much control you have over whether your world runs smoothly; the most important factor is you." A good thing to know, you may feel--particularly for those times when it seems you are considerably pushed around by circumstances be yond your control. Well, the fact is that you can't win them all, as the say ing goes, but a positive ap proach to life problems is very helpful in building and main taining your,„ good mental health. The opening quote is from a pamphlet, It's Good to Know About Mental Health, published by the National In stitute of Mental Health, which is part of HEW's Alco hol, Drug Abuse, and Mental Health Administration. Following are a few point ers from the pamphlet on how you can help yourself to bet ter mental health: • When an individual re laxes, so can others around him. When he is cooperative and outgoing, he stimulates the cooperative spirit in others. • The "easy-does-it" ap proach may be best. It means getting the job at hand done without overreacting to--a challenge and upsetting others. • Try to analyze and han dle anger. Knowing why you •are angry and acknowledging it may help. • Don't brood. A change of pace, a refocusing of energies and effort, may help you to do something positive and use ful about a problem instead of brooding. The pamphlet also offers an overview of the various kinds of mental and emo tional disorders and a. brief discussion of their causes. Another section gives help ful information for recogniz ing some of the warning signs of mental health prob lems for which help may be needed. What is a mentally healthy person? A full discussion is a c large order indeed, but the pamphlet offers incisive gen eral comment. For example: A mentally healthy person can cope with life. It isn't always easy, but he manages to handle life's usual chal lenges and the different stages most of us go through-- school, marriage, work, loss of loved ones, retirement. The emotionally disturbed or mentally ill person, on the other hand, sees the bad things as exaggerated or larger than life-size. He loses his grip; life has him on the run. The joys that should come with healthy living es cape him as life becomes es sentially a grim experience. Free single copies -of It's Good to Know About Mental Health may be had by writing to the National Institute of Mental Health, ADAMHA, 5600 Fishers Lane, Rockville, Maryland 20852. * * * * There're two things that lead to error: a speaker with a loud voice and one with deep emotion.
