The Cardunals were able to stay with the Warriors through the entire game until the last minute when McHenry pulled ahead to win by 6 points. "EARL WALSH So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR It had been a long time since we saw a McHenry High team romp over Barrington Bronco aggregation until it happened Saturday night. The Barrington basketball boys were here to see what they could do about stopping our rampaging Warriors. Their big man got physical as the game opened, but couldn't hold the pace. The Broncos did give the home team some trouble at the start with their zone defense, but found the outside shooters coming through with enough good shots to get things rolling. It was the best team McHenry has trotted out in many years against the worst Barrington team. The score was 78-39 as Coach Ludwig had everybody in the game. One exception was Joe Meyer who had one hand wrapped because of an injury. Sorry Joe couldn't get into this one. He has rated a top sub spot, but is one of those boys who grew so tall so fast and needs another year to develop. Once again the Warriors bench strength looked good. Must be a comfort to Coach Ludwig to have a year when he can look down the bench and pick a player or two to go in and actually give the team a lift. We„ didn't see the game at Dundee so will have to pick up the details in Dick Rabbitt's report. The McHenry team had to give it all they had to win that one. No surprise in that. The Warriors who had fretted away a 14 point lead in the early stages of the game had to come from behind for the win. The Warriors raced out to a quick 5 to 0 lead before Dundee found the range and countered with three straight baskets to lead 6 to 5. With Kasprzyk having the hot hand from the outside and Koerber working underneath, the locals sped away to a 21 to 9 first quarter fead and it looked as if the game would be a runaway. The Warriors scored quick on Koerber's basket to lead 23 to 9, and then Max Kipfer the 6'7" Dundee center took command. Using his height to great ad vantage the lanky senior hit for 17 points in the period. Even though Kipfer was a one man show for the Cards, balanced scoring on the part of the Warriors enabled them to still hold a nine point advantage at halftime 42 to 33. In the third period the Warriors hit a cold spell, and the Cards gradually crept up, and at 3:30 of the period went ahead 48 to 46. But two quick baskets by the "Radar" put the Warriors ahead, and Zeller and Koerber ended the scoring for the period with the locals hanging on to a 54 to 52 margin. The fourth quarter was a real ding dong battle. Both teams McHenry Country Club We will be closed from Feb. 2nd to March 14th. With a hostile crowd jeering, Tom, with ice water in his veins, made the two free throws to again knot UD the game. Marty Zeller on a breakaway put the Warriors ahead by two after Miller had tied it up on a one hander from the corner. With 34 seconds remaining Stark again was fouled. He calmly put in two more to in sure the victory, and Koerber's basket with 5 seconds remaining made the final 72 to 66 for a big Warrior win. Kipfer of Dundee led all scorers with 27, while Koerber had 20 for the Warriors. It was a great victory for the Warriors. The Cards never gave up, and Kipfer was a one man gang until he was injured seconds before the half. He played the second half, but the bad knee gave him trouble, and Saturday found him on crutches, and will be oiit for several weeks. Again the Warriors defense bothered the opposition, the tight man to man defense is one of the best in the conference, and is a big factor in the win ning ways of the Warriors. Phone 385-8630 OPEN TODAY - NO APPOINTMENT NECESSARY by Dick Rabbitt The rampaging Warriors of Coach Ken Ludwig won their fourth game in a row, their twelfth of the season as they easily defeated Barrington here Saturday night 78 to 39. The win was their fifth in conference play and keeps them one game behind first place Zion who had trouble beating Mundelein 62 to 53. Koerber's basket at 7:30 put the Warriors ahead to stay and vim four starters all scoring led 13 to 7 at the end of the period. Barrington's ability to get back into their zone defense during the period slowed down the Warriors attack, but in the second stanza the Warriors began to make their move to the basket. With a pressing ball hawking defease the bigger, slower Broncos were having trouble running with 4he well conditioned lads of Coach Ludwig, and the Warriors went into the intermission leading 32 to 18. Going to a three guard of fense the Warriors literally ran the Broncos out of Buckner gym during the third period. With the Ludwig brothers, along with Reilly hitting from the outside and Koerber from underneath, the Warriors raced to a 56 to 24 lead at the end of the period. Once again Coach Ludwig showed compassion for the opposition, by going to the bench at the beginning of the final period. Even this could not stop the Warriors, as the reserves outscored Barrington 22 to 15 in the final eight minutes. Coach Ludwig used his entire squad in the game, and they all did a splendid job. Once again it was a great team effort. Defense was most noteable in this game. Tom Stark, hero of Friday night's game with his clutch free throws, put on an excellent performance Saturday night. Given the assignment of guarding Tichy, Barrington's high scoring forward, the local lad held Tichy to 3 baskets in 7 attempts. So frustrated was Tichy that he didn't get a shot off the third period, and finally was taken out of the game for the remainder of the evening. With fine team balance, a good bench, and Stark begin ning to play like the Tom of last season, this Warrior team is rounding into a real good ball club. The Broncos were really never in it. Although they are a big team, they couldn't keep pace with the swifter, smoother Warriors of McHenry. Coach Ludwig was most pleased with his Warriors for their weekend play. Winning two conference games in a weekend will give the Warriors the confidence they will need at Libertyville Friday night. Next home game is Friday, Jan. 31 when the Warhawks of North Chicago will be here. It will be Orange Night at Buckner gym that night. The Pep Club is going all out to fill the gym and give this fine team the support it richly deserves. So mark Friday, Jan. 31 on your calendar and come out to see a real fine McHenry basketball team in action. You won't be disappointed.
