With Dick Rabbitt On The Sidelines thl column about a genUeman that i had K PHÎ I P r ^Sf • J1^1 only several weeks ago, Lloyd Keller, a resident of Crystal Lake whJ^nfn^ 3 T Jetired emP^yee of Pure Oil company who spent twenty-five \?ars with that company has a most unusual and inter ting hpbby. Many years ago back in North Dakota, Mr. Keller in. basketball. He bagan collecting a TSKZ! 00 actlvlties of North Dakota university. ,n.terested in the play of the University of Minnesota, he took it upon himself to keep a record of the box scores of that fine university. . I? La^ in 1942! Lloyd did not let his hobby get the best of him. Doing much research at a cost w .ime, and money he accumulated records of the Illinois high school State tournament from its beginning in 1908 and has continued it to the present time. He has all tournament scores, plus the box scores of every final game. He has said, that to his knowledge only one other individual, a man from Farmer City, 111., near Champaign, has a record of games of the State tourney to match his record. Getting closer to home, Mr. Keller has a record of all box scores of McHenry County tournaments starting with the initial tournament in 1920. Names familiar to you old time McHenry fans are among those mentioned: Boaslett, Niesen, Barbian, Nye and Weber were among the locals that participated in that first McHenry County tourney, Mr. Keller didn't stop at the county level. He has records of the District tournaments played from their inception. Names like Red Grange of Wheaton and Earl Britton of Elgin, familiar to Mini football fans dot the record books of Lloyds Among some other local names mentioned are Sib Whiting, a gentleman named Walsh, could it be S.I.H. and Red Winkel, from the early days of county basketball. * The 1925 McHenry county champs of McHenry take a place in his record book. Bacon, Krause, Overton, Freund, J. Whiting, and Thomas played in the finals and defeated Hebron 22 to 19. Some of the old time coaches familiar to you fans are also mentioned; Mac McCracken of McHenry, Toney Roskie of Woodstock, Dan Home of Harvard, Mel Stuessy of St. Mary's, Owen Metcalf of Crystal Lake, Fred Gunderson of Richmond, L.B. Crane of Hebron, Max Brady of Crystal Lake, Cliff Fulton of McHenry, just to name a few. The 1937-38 McHenry team finished second. Knox, Adams, McAndrews, Justen, Kildary, and Meyers played on that team. The teams of 1944-45-46-47 also were runnersup in the county tourney. Dean f^cCracken, Art Jackson, Schafer, Bonslett, Michels, Miller, Carl Neiss are mentioned. Mr. Keller has also kept a record of all North Suburban box scores since the league began in 1948. Twenty six years of all conference games. All in all Mr. Keller has seven volumes of basketball material, and I feel quite honored that just last week Mr. Keller came to West Campus and presented me his collection of what I would call basketball history for not only the state, the county, but the North Suburban Conference. As the statistician for the North Suburban Conference, Mr. Keller felt that someone should have records in case a history of the conference would be written in the future. In a humble way, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to Mr. Keller and hope that he has many years ahead to continue his hobby. From time to time I will insert a box score of past McHenry games in this column, to let the old timers relive those glory days of their teens, and to the not so old a chance to get out in the backyard and practice their shots of old. McHENRY TEACHER'S BOWLING LEAGUE 1-15-75 Bernie Clary of McHenry, President of the Polar Pairs leads around the parade lap. The Polar Pairs Snowmobile club of Spring Grove, held their seventh annual Breezy Lawn Farm Snowmobile Derby Sunday, Jan. 5, before a crowd of over a thousand happy fans. There was just enough snow to make conditions favorable for some very exciting racing, snowmobilers stopped at the Polar Pairs clubhose on the last leg of a 1,000 mile ride from Canada to Round Lake for the benefit of the Lion's In ternational. Also present at the race as guest of the Polar Pairs, were the children of the McHenry County Orphanage. With a little help from Mother nature, we'll see you again the first week of 1976. With well over 100 entries, the competition provided some of the finest racing in our short history. Safety was the highlight of the day with no accidents spare a few scattered engines and tracks. Loren Sch midt pf neighboring Johnsburg, a mehiber of the Breezy Lawn Riders, the junior club of the Polar Pairs, was the winner of a half of beef, 1st prize. Second prize of a hind quarter went to John Maroni of Round Lake.
