(RT.31) McHENRY The tubes 'disappear* from chassis of color television The company which pio neered in both black-and- white and color televi sion receiver development marked the 20th anniver sary of color TV earlier this year with an an nouncement it was to be come the first U.S. manu facturer offering a full color TV line consisting entirely of solid state models. As a result, RCA's last color television receiver with chassis tubes -- the so-called hybrid design -- has rolled off the produc tion line at the company's Bloomington, ind., plant. In making the solid state commitm'ent an nouncement, William C. Hittinger, who heads RCA Consumer Electronics, said the switch to all solid state otto. He noted that the new RCA XL-100 sets will consume from 22.5 tp 48 per cent less energy than compa rable tube-type sets. The changeover to ex clusive production of all solid state receivers marks the end of a 20-year era which saw color TV grow from zero in 1954 to a more than $12 billion-a- year business today in sales of sets, replacements parts, servicing and broad casting. He emphasized that the new RCA XL-100 sets are "clearly superior" in tech nology, reliability and long-term performance to past RCA tube-type color receivers. "Instrument perform ance improvements have been made to give more pleasing and natural flesh tones, and the new RCA color line on a model-for-:. model basis will provide a superior picture when compared to the previous line." Noting increased public awareness in the area of energy conservation, RCA has discontinued the wide ly-used "instant-on" fea ture which requires some power operating at all times. Recently, a leading consumer product maga zine criticized the quick warm-up feature, noting that it is wasteful of en ergy and should be dis continued. With the discontinuance of production of 14-inch and 18-inch (diagonal) screen sizes, RCA manu factures five basic color TV screen sizes -- 15, 17, 19, 21 and 25-inch 'diago nal) -- in an XL-100 line that offers a full year's Purchaser Satisfaction warranty regardless of size or price. The fine furniture cabinet contains RCA's newest XL-100 all solid state color TV chassis and V big 25-inch (diagonal) negative matrix picture tube. The Cumberland is among RCA's 1975 color TV offerings, the first completely solid state line.
