You know that crack you made about Alvina tolerating you around the house, well, you may have been jesting but I am certainly glad that I can get out on the golf course and the tennis courts to escape from the "Little Woman" on occasion as I know that I get in her hair. Give her my sincere sympathy and tell her to speak softly but carry a big stick, bigger than that one you have carried around for protection for so many years. Enough of this chit-chat, Earl, but do settle back in your easy chair, light up that big cigar, keep a beer or highball handy, and enjoy all the sports on TV, even those pesky Cubs who will be popping up with a pennant one of these years, probably even before the White Sox now that Ron Santo has deserted them! Do hope that we can get together when we return to Illinois come May or June. You will recall that I tried several times last summer but you were always too busy, or your wife wasn't feeling well. Now you'll either have to come or else come up with another reason. Anyway, we'll try and alert Red Winkel and Sib Whiting, too, just for old times' sake. Most Sincerely, Zeke PS - Don't forget that Cleveland trains out here so maybe you can get an expense account allowance to visit their Spring Training Camp, also. HJB < Dear "Zeke": Must look up the records. Think we will hit the 40-year mark in August. The name Smith is right. That "Tempus Fugit" watch shop should have been preserved. So you think the Cubs will win a pennant before the Sox turn the trick Huh! Must say they should since they haven't won the honors since 1945. Never mind the hair piece. We will need a stocking cap for skiing. We should be free as a bird for that lunch date next sum mer. --And, what about my "Little Woman" getting my hair? Your letter is greatly ap preciated, "Zeke". Sincerely, "S.I.H." Another of those famous McHenry Country Club We will be closed from Feb. 2nd to March 14th. We will reopen Friday March 14th. IT'S ORANGE NIGHT TONIGHT-and this action confirms that the Warriors are attracted to the ORANGE ball, during this rebound play in the McHenry 57-45 victory over Libertyville. Marty Zeller, No. 51, gets a good view (and a foul) as he watches Steve Koerber capture the rebound. The win gives the Warriors sole possession of second place. Just one game off pace of the Zion- Benton Zee-Bees. The action will be heavi-lonight as the McHenry cagers take on the Warhawks of North Chicago. The West Campus gym will be the most colorful place in town if everyone wears something ORANGE. The Knights always come to play ball, and they will be looking to knock off a top rated team in the Warriors. It should be a good game. (STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) Warriors Set For Home Doubleheader By Dick Rabbitt The McHenry High "Fighting Warriors" take to the court tonight to face the always dangerous North Chicago "Warhawks". The Warriors are currently alone in second place in the conference as a result of defeating Libertyville last week. North Chicago is tied for fourth with a 4 and 3 record. The Warhawks are led by center 6'6" Del Yarbrough, the conference leading scorer with a 21 pt. average. Another high scorer for the Hawks is Terry Barrett. Coach Larry Hanzel's club has been struggling along all season and he feels that his club is ready to make its move during the second half of the conference season. ' They are big, and fast, but their trouble in the early stages of the season has been their shooting. The Warriors of Coach Ken Ludwig likewise are ready to make the move. Only one game out, and depending upon help from some other club to knock off the Zeebees, the Warriors have been improving With each game. When their offense has let down, the defense has picked them up, and vice versa. They are a good ball club and are riding a five game winning streak. Let's get out and help them to win six in a row. FORMAL WEAR RENTAL for ALL OCCASIONS tttuiM.Mll 1214 N. Green St., McHenry EARL WALSH So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR The following letter came from our old (shouldn't say old - - better say long time) friend, Harold "Zeke" Bacon, who wrote "Bacon's Strip" before we took over: Ptaurof the Week! KENNE LUDWIG Kenne displayed a fine de fensive effort against Lib- ert"ville last weekend. He alsi? scored 8 points and picked up 5 assists. WRESTLER Tuesday, January 14 Dear So I Hear, Well, Earl, I don't know if you were trying or not, but you have just succeeded in firing the shot that was heard round the world, or at least across the United States. Didn't think you would ever do it, but you did; resign from your job as City Clerk! The one thing I can sincerely wish you, and Alvina, is that you enjoy your retirement as much as have Char and I. This life in Arizona is all that one could hope for and again, our only regret is that we cannot share it with more of our friends. Now that you have that retirement bug in your system what are you going to do about that other 'job' you have held for an even longer time than the Clerk's position? I'm referring, of course, to your column in the Plaindealer. Was thinking the other day that come October of this year, or thereabouts, it will be 40 long years since you took over! To think of all the events you have covered in that period, and all the Blarney you had to manufacture to fill the spaces each week, then twice each week, it just doesn't seem possible. One can just hear Joe Frett remarking, when he learned of your retiring, "Some people get so soon smart, and others --?" Oh, what memories! Another thought occurs to me, Earl, now that you are starting your new career you had better get rid of that hat in which you have been showing up at the head of your column, and get yourself a new glorious hair piece one of those new-fangled ones which make one look younger, so they say. Of course, being so much younger, I wouldn't understand and really don't need one but if I happen to see one you'll get a belated Christmas present, retirement award, or whatever you want to call it. Don't be surprised. You mentioned Lawrence Welk, one of your (our) favorites who wrote you recently. Funny, but tomorrow he'll be playing golf here in Tucson at the Dean Martin Open. Normally I'd be there at the Pro-Am as each year I take my grandsons out on that particular day for then they can get all the autographs of the famous personalities and I have visited with L.W. (not Loretto Walsh but Lawrence Welk and that's probably why you like him so much) on oc casion but right now Char is a bit under the weather from a virus she picked up so I've been sticking quite close to home doing the household chores. She's a bit better today and spent a few hours on the back porch in the 80 degree sunshine which certainly helps one to get a better feeling than that zero weather you are having back home in Illinois right now. Wouldn't trade you for anything but of course you youngsters can take it. After all, this is my 50th year in the banking business though I haven't done anything much about it for just over 5 years now. Brian has given a fine account of him self with victories in his last two matches. He won by a score of 10-5 against his Antioch opponnet and won with a pin in 3:26 in his match against Liberty ville last weekend. WITH A SPLASH-Bruce Fetzer a junior on the McHenry varsity swimming team is on his way to a second place finish in the 100 yard Butterfly event. Bruce covered the 100 yards in a time of 1:06. He also placed third in the 200 yard individual medley during the SWIMMER Mcllenry-Lake Forest swimming match at the West Campus pool this past Tuesday. The next home meet will be against Hersey on Wednesday, Feb. 5. The events will begin at 4:30 p.m. (STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD)
