Such memor- ialization has never happened before and probably will never happen again. Edwin M. Stanton certainly , made a prophetic statement following Lincoln's death when he sadly said, "Now he belongs to the ages." On Lincoln's birthday we honor a man who rose from disheartening poverty to become one of the great est and most revered men among men in history. His singular humility would prompt him to dislike the homage America gives him. Defeats and disappoint ments plagued him in his lifetime. Events and people gave him ample reason to be discouraged and resent ful. He conquered discouragement, resisted resent ment. A most fitting eulogy was expressed by Ralph Waldo Emerson - "His heart was as great as the world, but there was no room in it to hold the memory of wrong." XiEORGE R. JUSTEN FUNERAL HOMfJ " W. Elm St., McHenry, Illinoii 3619 SERVICES % An Open Letter To The Public From Henry Block Of H&R Block Regarding Income Tax Rebates. Following the announcement of President Ford's proposed income tax rebate plan for individuals# I recommended an alternate plan to both the President and Congressional leaders. I believe my plan is more equitable and would maximize the economic impact. Here's how I compare the two plans: THE FORD PLAN: percent rebates 1. Would give flat 12 totaling $12 billion. 2. Would give a maximum $1,000 rebate to those with an income tax of $8,333. (Most taxpayers with incomes of $40,000 or more would receive a $1,000 rebate.) 3. Would give the largest rebates to those who are least likely to spend the money. 4. Would base the tax rebate on amount of the 1974 tax paid. the THE BLOCK PLAN: 1. Would give graduated declining percent age rebates totaling an amount to be determined by Congress. 2. Would give a maximum 40% tax rebate at lowest income levels declining to zero for those with an Adjusted Gross In come in excess of $40,000. 3. Would give the largest rebates to low and middle income persons most in need of tax relief and most likely to spend the money. 4. Would base the tax rebate percentage on Adjusted Gross Income and then apply it to the tax...eliminating addi tional tax advantage to those already benefiting from tax shelters. WHAT SHOULD YOU DO? WRITE THE PRESIDENT, YOUR REPRESENTATIVES AND SENATORS - Make your views known, whichever plan you prefer. They are the ones who will pass and approve such legislation. FILE EARLY -- The Internal Revenue Service is urging taxpayers to file their returns early. It is likely that the sooner the return is filed the sooner the taxpayer will receive any rebate permitted by new legislation. And, if you are entitled to a regular tax refund ... the sooner you file, the sooner you will receive it. If you have any questions about your income taxes . . . visit or call any one of our more than 7,000 offices nationwide. There is never a charge for tax information or for answering your questions. President of H & R BLOCK, INC. mmmmm m Would it really help to have an strument to predict the storms of life? When the barometer falls it's too late to build a sea wall or to dig cyclone cellar. Wise men prepare when the wind is calm. A leaking roof must be mended while the sun shines. The Church does not claim to pro vide a barometer of life. But it preaches every Sunday the spiritual readiness which climaxed Christ's Ser mon on the Mount: "Whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and docth them, I will liken him unto a wise man which built his house upon a rock: "And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat upon that house. . . . "And it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock."
