It's not too fancy, and it doesn't have any microcircuits or chrome trim, but it could save us more than $100,000 a year. Ed Steeve, Commonwealth Edison engineer, designed it; Carl Knutson, Assistant Shop Superintendent, helped put it together at our Maywood Technical Center. The vacuum chamber consists of a short, transparent plastic cylinder that's slightly larger in circumference than the pipe it's testing. We fasten it around the weld, where the leaks are hkely to occur, then seal it airtight.The space between pipe and cylinder is then partially filled with a clear liquid (usually water) and a vacuum pump is attached to remove the air. If there are any leaks in the weld, the air from inside the pipe will create a column of telltale bubbles. It's a simple process, but vitally important. When we put cables in underground pipes, we expect them to last for many years. A pin-hole leak would result in a cable failure, a loss of power, and a loss of "valuable man-hours in repair work. We have been testing welds by other methods, which were time-consuming, and cost as much as $14,000 for every mile of pipe. But our new vacuum chamber device will do the same job for a fraction of that cost. The money we save will help keep your rates down. And the time we save will give our Commonwealth Edison engineers a chance to do a little more of that valuable experimentation.
