They have been traced as far back as 9000 B.C. in Idaho. The Indians all had dogs before white man came to this continent, bringing his own favorite dogs with him. The dogs keen sense of sight, smell, hearing and tracking were very helpful to the first men, since their own lives depended on hunting for food. Dogs were then taught to work for man in other ways, suvh as hauling, as the Alaskan Malemutes, even before the wheel was invented; guarding, as the German Shepherd; rescue, as the St. Bernard and t h e N e w f o u n d l a n d (Newfoundlands are used to save people from drowning); and herding as the English Sheepdog. Even the smallest dog can save his master from fire by barking. Dogs have certainly done their share to help man. Probably their greatest con­ tribution, though, to early man as well as man today is that of companionship. Helping Paws needs volunteers to work in our office in Crystal Lake one day per week for 4 hours, from 10-12 and 1-3. The work involves an­ swering our phones, making out cards on animals, etc. We also need volunteers to take in dogs temporarily, until they can be adopted. Helping Paws will pay for feed and will see that the animal has its DHL shot. A donation is requested when you adopt an animal through this column. And for your protection, adoption contracts should be filled out at the time you adopt an animal.
