They took second place by winning 38 to 10 over Plato Center and 34 to 22 over Hebron and losing to Elgin 50 to 14. McHenry players on the team were Overton, Bacon, A. Freund, J. Whiting, S. Whiting, Nye, Fay, L. Conway, E. Conway and Thomas. A.J. Kennedy and W.F. Riley of Chicago have rented the store room in the Laures block on the West Side and will open next Saturday a first class radio shop. They will specialize in the Reliable Radio Ap­ paratus, a set of their own making. They wjll also handle a number of other well known and popular makes of receiving sets besides carrying on a repair shop. Showing of 1925 millinery, smart hats, the best in style and quality, with new shapes and colorings, $3.00, $4.00, $5.00 and up. Children's hats at $1.50 and up. Blake Sisters Millinery. At Vogt's Drug store in West McHenry every child who makes a 5 cent purchase will receive an Easter novelty on Saturday only. The members of the home talent cast which recently presented "That's One On Bill" in this city were guests of the American Legion post of McHenry on Wednesday of last week when they saw "Rose Marie", at the Wood's theatre in Chicago. John Bolger, who acted as business manager of the local post during the local production, accompanied the players to Chicago. Lost: a pet alligator, answers to the name of "Peter". FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of March 14, 1935) Were it not for the deter­ mination of sturdy stock in the early nineties, many of us would not now be enjoying the protection of the Royal Neigh­ bors of America. On the twenty - first of March the Society will have reached its fortieth an­ niversary a day which is being celebrated by camps with many happy memories of fellowship. Residents of Spring Grove will be pleased to learn that the next road building project on the county program will be the construction of a road from Route 60 south of Spring Grove to connect with Route 173 north of Spring Grove. The route will pass through Spring Grove proper. Postmasters in the United States have sold 548,673 duck stamps each costing one dollar since the stamp act was passed last summer. Mr. and Mrs. Irven Schmitt have moved from Ringwood to the flat over the bakery on Green street. Roland McCannon of Ringwood resided at the meeting of the McHenry County rural section of Illinois State Teachers association of which he is president, Thur­ sday evening at Woodstock. Miss Rose Tonyan and Christine Wegener, who are graduate nurses of St. An­ thony's hospital, Chicago, have passed the state board examination which took place Jan. 9 and 10. Miss Tonyan is supervisor of the Pediatric department at the hospital and Christine Wegener is taking a post graduate course in laboratory technician's work. Friends of Charles Khunert are happy to know that the recent operation he underwent for the removal of cataracts on his eyes was successful and his sight is much improved. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of March 23, 1950) Whether or not McCullom Lake will become a village will be t answered next Saturday, March 25, when voters in that community go to the poles to decide the issue. Frank Kempfer, Sr., was taken to the Woodstock hospital Monday evening where he was found to be suffering from shock, rib, leg and arm injuries and a broken right shoulder as the result of an auto accident. •? One of the most attractive business places in McHenry today is Althoff's Hardware store in West McHenry which has just been completely remodeled. This year the Althoffs are observing twenty- five years in business. One of McHenry's oldest residents is Chris Blake who on March 30 will observe his ninetieth birthday anniversary. March 26 in the high school auditorium a musical program will be presented by the school organization which will par­ ticipate in the district music contest at Harvard April 1. Three choruses and the or­ chestra will present their contest numbers with eighty- five students taking part. Two recent burglaries have been under investigation by Deputy Sheriff Harold Fox of Johnsburg. Both occurred in Lily Lake where wmdows and screens were broken and homes * ransacked. Jacque V. Hopkins of McHenry participated in arena type play production ex­ periments at Trinity college which are teaching students of community groups which do not have stage and auditorium facilities. Hopkins has been cast for the part of "Spinnoto" in the play "A Bell For Adam". TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from thtf^files of March 18, 1965) McHenry high school musicians accumulated eighty- three sweepstakes points in state competition at Evergreen Park. The exact ratings for sweepstakes have not <been received. McHenry is almost sure to be among the top five class A schools of the twenty- four entered. Dorothy Vick of W. Park View, McCullom Lake, filed a petition for a Seat on the Board of School District 15. Sgt. Richard Clark", juvenile officer for the city of McHenry, and Sgt. Kenneth Espey, also of the local department, attended the fifth training institute presented by the Illinois Juvenile officers association March 11 in Joliet. William H. Hansen, YNSN, has served three years in the Navy and has re-enlisted for another six year period. He is stationed on the U.S.S. En­ terprise at Newport News, Va. The young serviceman has served on the U.S.S. Ticon- deroga and the U.S.S. Coral Sea. Mrs. Anna Krettler passed away at her home in McCullom Lake, March 14, just four days before her seventy-seventh birthday. McHenry County Association for Retarded Children opened a PAGE II - PLAINDEALER-WEDNESDAY, MARCH f, 1975 Referendum Progress Discussed By MCC^Board McHenry County college board of trustees discussed the progress of the promotion for the upcoming March 8 referendum at its board meeting last week. A progress report was given on what has been done as far as promotion of the referendum. John Garrett, vice-president, reported that the Board of McHenry County Education and Training association (sponsors of the tool and die apprenticeship program for the college) generously con­ tributed $1,000 to the McHenry County P^ducation foundation to help defray expenses in promoting the referendum. - In other business, the board sheltered workshop in Wonder Lake this month with Mrs. Adelaide B. Patzke of Mc­ Cullom Lake in charge of the shop adjoining the training center. Mrs. Charles Allen of Joliet is spending a few weeks with Mrs. George Kane. One of the biggest farm losses due to fire to occur in Northern Illinois in recent years took place during the blizzard last week on the E.A. Wesson farm on Greenwood road. The loss of the part brick barn was estimated at about $30,000, while forty-four registered Holsteins were killed in the blaze, each valued at $600, a heavy loss occurred through the burning of 10<) tons of grain and hay. Mayor Donald P. Doherty will seek his second term in office this spring and will be unopposed for the city's highest post city and village elections are April*20. heard from Dr.. James R. Davis, president, that Spring enrollment figures show a 20 percent increase over credit hours for the Fall semester of 1974-75. He also stated there are 125 more veterans this Spring than during the Fall semester. Richard Kirchner under Community Education and Frank Favaro under Hobby- Leisure Time-Rec, part-time instructors for the Office of Community Services, will donate their wages back to the college. The exact use of the money will be worked out with the instructors. ' John Garrett, vice-president, gave a report on the progress of the construction site. He had received communication from Jenkins and Boiler Company, Inc., general contractor, which stated the steel girders for the Applied Science building would arrive on the new site Feb. 28, with erection to start March 10. T Nathan Pohl gave the treasurer's report and stated that by making budget cuts, the adjusted deficit for 1974-75 would be $57,979 rather than $74,804. He added they are still looking for possible budget savings. The board approved the report.
