Johnsburg Wildcats Capture Fox Valley Conference Tourney On The Sidelines With Dick Rabbitt Last week was the week that I really goofed off. Two of my most ardent fans', and really good friends, Bill Bolger and "Chief" Peterson called to my attention, of another McHenry high school team that won 20 or more games. The 1941-42 McHenry high team won 20 games and lost 3 according to my records. Also according to my records I see that the McHenry team played at Woodstock against a small St. Mary's team, that dealt them a loss 20 to 19. There was a player on that St. Mary's team named Rabbitt who was the high point man in that game with 8 points. My humble apologies to Bill and "Chief" for the mistake that I made, but couldn't resist putting in the rest of the story. I also failed to mention on the present McHenry "Warrior" team a senior who had played his last game at Buckner Gym. Joe Meyer a real hustler in my book, who showed what he was made of Friday night at Crystal Lake, canning two free throws that played an important factor in the Warrior win, and playing an outstanding floor game for Coach Ken Ludwig's McHenry five. Another sincere apology for Joe for neglecting him earlier in this column. Our congratulations to Ken Scanlin, McHenry's 105 lb., wrestler who was in the State Finals last weekend. Ken was defeated in his first match, and the winner from Forest View went on to win the title. Ken won his second match, but lost out in a bid for a Consolation Championship. Competition was tough all the way for the local wrestler, and credit should go to Ken and his Coach Marty SobzCak for a job well done this season. Had the opportunity to attend the meeting last Saturday morning to select the North Suburban All Conference team. After sitting through a three hour session, I will go on record in favor of eliminating All Conference teams. True it gives the boys the recognition they deserve, but the process of selection is something else. It is really dog eat dog for the selection of 12 boys out of a ten team conference. The coaches did go on record as favoring a 15 man team in future years. Not a guard was selected on the team. All coaches agreed that the success of a team depends upon its guards, but no one bothered to vote for some of the outstanding guards in the league. In my opinion Steve Kasprzyk was the best guard in the conference at both ends of the floor. Sam Mosolino fine rebounder from Crystal Lake was another fine athlete who failed to make the squad. Coach Ludwig was in there plugging for his boys, but he was badly outnumbered. It wasn't because he didn't try. I am sure at the end of the meeting some coaches had hard feeling toward one another, that is to be expected, when you try and select the best from a conference. I will pose the question, is it worth it? Congratulations are fn order to Steve Koerber and Marty Zeller who did make the team. To Tom, Steve, and Kenne in the book of all Warrior fans you three were indeed all conference. A big delegation of Warrior fans were on hand at Belvidere Tuesday night. Looked as if the city council had a meeting. Mayor Stanek and his wife, S.I.H. and his wife, Freddie Meyer and his wife, and Ed Datz and his wife were all in attendance to root the Warriors on to a big win. From all the talk I heard at halftime, there should be a great McHenry crowd at the game tonight. So come on fans, let's all get out and support the Warriors in their drive to STATE. to six points. The Johnsburg rally continued until the final 40-35 buzzer. The Johnsburg Wildcats captured the Fox Valley Conference tournament for the second consecutive time, defeating Harrison in a hard- fought contest 40-35. In the first night of the tournament, Avon beat Fox River Grove 22-11, and Big Hollow beat Countryside 45-39. Both Johnsburg and Harrison had byes for the first round. The second night, Johnsburg beat Avon 48-11. and Harrison defeated Big Hollow 42-29. Big Hollow came back to capture third place over Avon in a close 33-31 game. In the championship game, Johnsburg got off to* a slow start, trailing Harrison 21-9 by the middle of the second quarter. By halftime Harrison's lead was narrowed Island Lake Colt League Started BOX SCORE JOHNSBURG Bentz Behan Dixon . j , Oziminski Schmitt HARRISON Scully Kranz Gibbons Rice Price Topp 18 13 3 2 4 40 13 13 2 4 2 1 For the first time a Colt League will be started for in terested young men of the Island Lake grade school district and Wauconda high school district.
