W! WITH A 2 POINT LEAD - Kenne Ludwig widens the margin to 3 as his free throw is good. Kenne's next shot was also perfect to increase the Warrior lead to 4 points with only 19 seconds remaining. THEN the bottom dropped out as Harlem tied the game 53 all to go into overtime. There were 6 points scored in the 3 minute overtime period, McHenry had 2. (STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) EARL WALSH So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR. There has been some response to our request for contributions for a St. Patrick's Day column. They are bashful and don't sign their names so we can't give credit where credit is due. ' S.I.H.: ' Do you remember a song that went like this? There was Jimmy just as stiff as starch, just like nis Daddy on the 17th of March. Were you there and tell me . did you notice, they were all out ' of step but Jim. We remember, but forget the words. Another asks if we remember f the song "Who put the overalls in Mrs. Murphy's chowder." Yep. We remember. But, ' nobody ever really knew. Some say 'twas the same 7 blatherskite who put the extra , drop in Mrs. McGinty's coffee. When Irish eyes are smiling, all the world seems bright and gay. Would that there were a lot more smiling eyes in this world of ours today. We always credit the Irish for having a special luck. But do admit that much of it comes from courage and pluck. St. Patrick has always been honored on the day March Seventeen When there's a special glint in Irish eyes and "Wearin' o' the Green." We cannot all be like that great saint and banish snakes from the good "ould" sod But we can always be trustworthy and remember that there is a God And if ill luck befalls us - sometimes for our very own good It gives peace of mind to be able to say "I did the best I could." This one came in marked "Nothing new, but never old." May the roads Rise with you And the wind be A|ways at your back; And may the Lord Hold you in the Hollow of His hand. -A Gaelic Blessing Now comes "Scotty" Thomas to claim that St. Patrick was a Scotchman. He has a lot of yarns about great deeds done by the Scots. How could we have lived so long and never heard? So. We move toward another great day. Co-workers have decorated our office with green and more green. We love it. You have heard it before, but never a St. Patrick's Day dawns that we don't think of our father (He came from Ireland) singing "The Hat Me F-a-a-ther Wore." We wish you a "Happy St. Patrick's Day" and will be glad to see all who come through our door.' We'll be wearin' the green. All Set "I thought of a fine idea today, dear. I promised a thousand dollars to a man if he would relieveme of all my worries." "But where will you get the thousand to give him?" "That will be his first worry." (STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Warriors Lose 57 To 55 Overtime Thriller To Harlem In Sectional By Dick Rabbitt For the "Fighting Warriors" and their fans the dream was shattered at Rockford last Tuesday night, as the Warriors lost an overtime thriller to the Harlem Huskies 57 to 55. To make it more dishear tening, the Warriors were leading 53 to 49 with 19 seconds remaining in regulation time. But the Huskies fought back to tie the score with 2 seconds remaining, and won in over time at the buzzer. The game started out as expected for a sectional tournament. Both teams displayed the jitters, and missed shots, and committed turnovers that normally would not have taken place during the regular season. Kenne Ludwig got the locals on the board with a 15 footer at the 7:30 mark, and a minute later Tom Stark's basket put the Warriors ahead 4 to 2. They then went over three minutes without scoring, and trailed at the end of the period 12 to 9. The tempo picked up a bit during the second stanza when Steve Koerber got rolling, along with Kasprzyk, Zeller and Reilly, but the Huskies with 6'9" Dan Brydon making the easy layup, managed to stay ahead and lead 28 to 22 at the intermission. In the third period the Warriors began to play like the Warriors of old. Zeller took the tip and made a basket, and Koerber followed suit seconds later to bring the score 28-26 Huskies^ Tom Stark's layup at 6:30 and Koerber's basket a minute later put the Warriors ahead 30 to 28. The Huskies went ahead 35 to 32 until Tom Stark's three point play with two seconds remaining put the Warriors ahead 36 to 35 at the end of the period. Stark's two baskets in creased the Warrior lead 40 to 36, and after KoCrber's two buckets mixed in with Kasprzyk's 15 footer, the Warriors led midway in the final period 46 to 42. With 2:45 remaining in the game the Warriors had their biggest lead 49 to 44, but. then the breaks seemed to go against them. Leading 51 to 49 with 19 seconds remaining, Kenne Ludwig stepped up and made two free throws amid a hollering, screaming Harlem crowd. Since sponsors now include Old Bridge, Swanson Chalet, Rusty Nail, Jerry's Phillip's 66 and The House of David, team members decided there is no need to call the league "In dustrial". A new name will be voted on. The league is presently looking for three area teams to complete an eight team schedule. Games are played on Monday and Wednesday evenings starting at 6:30 p.m. behind West campus high school. For further information contact League President Pat Wirtz after 6 p.m. at 385-0191. Greg Jury sank a 10 footer for the Huskies. On the inbound pass, it was in tercepted by the Huskies, and with two seconds remaining Jury again hit the basket that sent the game into overtime. In the overtime period the Huskies went ahead 55 to 53, but Reilly's basket tied it up at 2:37. From there on in, each team played with caution, but the Huskies retrieved a loose ball and as the buzzer sounded Brydon's layup went in, and sent the Warriors down to defeat. It was a stunned Warrior crowd, who were in complete silence after the game. The quick turnaround of events was just too much to take. The Warriors were not as sharp as in previous games. I'm sure that playing in the sectional had something to do with if. Nevertheless they gave it all they had. They went right down to the wire, and you can't expect much more. The Warriors closed the season with 23 wins and 5 losses, not bad for a team that was not picked highly in pre season polls.
