Carpet colors for 1976? PAGE 23-SUPPLEMENT TO THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER-FRL, MARCH 21, 1975 Carpet fashions for . America's bicentennial year are expected to run strongly to earthtones, not red, white and blue. This is the prediction of Robin McRae, designer for Lees Carpets, who already sees a significant swing to browns, off-whites, and rusts among people who are buying carpet this Spring. It's a solid trend and will continue to build through the fall season and the year to come, he feels. "It's helpful to imagine earthtones in the broadest sense," Mr. McRae said, "that is, colors that one associates with the earth, with growing things." Among the new earth- tones in the Lees palette this season are the obvious ones: taupe, leather, suede, hickory, walnut, ivory, bone, mocha, rust, bitter sweet, and firethorn. "But also consider grass greens that are far re moved from colors like jade, absinthe, and the old poison preen," Mr. McRae said. "The sun yellows that have such warmth and the rich gold, orange, and red tones that you find in a turning leaf will all be important as fashion accents for the near term. "The reason is that peo ple respond to warmth. They get enough cool bril liance on television," the designer said. Illustrating his point, Mr. McRae showed a color called white sage, an ivory with a subtle greenish cast, from a new Lees body shag called "Captivate. Pile yarns are polyester in a two-ply, heat-set con struction specified for the extra resilience and wear life this gives a carpet. "Captivate" comes in 19 colorways with the em phasis on subtle tonal variations, "shadows of color," in Mr. McRae's phrase. The carpet will cost about eleven dollars a square yard in stores. The designer showed a carpet called "Desert Shadows" in which an interesting mix of silver, vermouth, and birch cre ates a field and depth that is strikingly unusual. This carpet is of continuous filament Cadon nylon pile. It is meant for the hard- use areas of the home where superior durability is most appreciated. "Des ert Shadows," which is of dye techniques that is a little like printing on batik, comes m 14 color- ways. It will cost about nine dollars a square yard. Swiss chocolate, coffee, and burnt butter are a study in browns moving towards sunlight. They are three of a total of 21 colors in a luxurious washed vel vet plush that Lees calls "Silken Elegance." Pile yarns are nylon in a tight ly twisted and heat-set construction that offers superior tuft definition. The carpet will cost about eighteen dollars a square yard in stores. Doeskin, fern, and rob in's egg were the three colors Mr. McRae selected tc show from "Tradition," another new Lees plush, this one a Saxony with two-ply, heat-set polyester yarns. Doeskin, yes; and fern, maybe. But is robin's egg an earthtone? "Of or on the earth." Mr. McRae replied. "Tradition," in 20 colors, will cost about thirteen dollars a square yard. Obviously, fashion by the square yard.
