Home Economics Named To State Office Mary Dicks of McHenry has been installed as, the historian of the Illinois Student Home Economics association for the year 1975-76. The installation took place" at the Illinois Student Home Economics association conference at Illinois State university, Normal. Miss Dicks will assume her duties in May for the organization of about 950 members from colleges and MARY DICKS universities throughout the state. Mary is a junior at Illinois State university, majoring in Home Economics Education. She is currently secretary of ISU's Student Home Economics association and a member of ISU's Alpha Mu chapter of Kappa Omicron Phi, a national home economics honorary society. Among her other activities are membership in Kappa Delta Epsilon, a national education honorary society; Alpha Beta Alpha, national undergraduate library science fraternity, and formerly was a member of Alpha Lambda Delta, freshman Women's honorary society. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert M. Dicks of McHenry, Mary attended the Johnsburg schools and is a 1972 graduate of McHenry Community high school. West McHenry La Leche League To Be Organized The newly organized West McHenry group of LaLeche league will hold its first meeting Thursday, April 17, at 8{^m. The increased interest in the natural feeding of infants has led to the, growth of LaLeche league throughout McHenry county and to the formation of this new group. The new McHenry group will serve the city west of Route 31, and the Wonder Lake and Bull Valley areas. The original McHenry group will now serve the city east of Route 31 and the Johnsburg and Fox Lake areas. The name LaLeche is Spanish.and means "the milk." A non-sectarian, non-profit organization, the league's purpose is to help encourage "good mothering through breastfeeding." The West 'JMcHenry group will meet the third Thursday of each month. The East group will continue meeting on the second Wednesday. A series of four meetings will discuss, informally, different phases of breastfeeding. All women who are interested in nursing their babies are invited, as well as their babies. One need not be pregnant o even have a family to attend. Wives who hope some day to have children, grandmothers, and other interested persons are welcome. LaLeche league began in Franklin Park in 1956,when one mother who had successfully nursed her baby, helped another who wanted to breastfeed. This is still the basic approach, although the league is now international in scope, with over 2,000 groups helping thousands of women in thirty-two countries. Miss McHenry County Pagent Plans Announced Communities throughout McHenry county again are g invited to participate in th(T McHenry County Fair through one of the fair's most exciting, crowd-pleasing events, the Miss McHenry County Pageant. Don Peasley, public relations coordinator for the fair, said the new lineup Of attractions at the fair maintains the Miss McHenry County contest as the opening night feature. Several events are being shifted during the five-day fair, beginning Wednesday, July 30, but the competition featuring beauties from a dozen or more com­ munities is "firmly en­ trenched" as the leadoff night attraction. Peasley said all of last year's sponsors of local candidates are being invited to participate in the Miss McHenry County pageant. Each local com­ munity 'may select one can­ didate for the county com­ petition, and the preceding year's local sponsors have first choice on the right to sponsor a local contest and to determine the format of the local selec­ tion, Peasley explained. The reigning Miss McHenry County is Donna Humann from McHenry. She represented the McHenry County Fair association at the 1975 Miss Illinois County Fair com­ petition in January. Deadline for entries in this 1975 Miss McHenry County pageant has been set for 4 p.m. Sunday, July 6. Detailed rules and entry forms will be sent last year's sponsors when they indicate their decision to participate this year. Girls must be at least 16 by this Aug. 1 and not over 22 by Jan. 20, 1976, time of the state contest. Candidates must be single, never married and a resident of McHenry county for at least six months. The McHenry American Legion and auxiliary jointly sponsored last year's McHenry entry. McHenry Hosts 8 And 40 April Buffet Dinner The meeting of McHenry County Salon 483 of the 8 and 40 was held at the American Legion home in Harvard March 16. The hostesses were Helen Efflie, Florence Kennedy, Effie Phillip and Estelle Calvin. Money was donated for the Milk fund at the National Jewish hospital in Denver. Money was also sent to the Birthday fund at that hospital. The salon welcomed back May Chesak of Huntley after an extended ilfaess. Chapeau Alice Rossberg announced that the annual buffet dinner would be held at the American Legion home in McHenry April 27, serving from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the door, with all profits from this event going to the Cystic Fibrosis and Tubercular Children's funds. Beta Sigma Pi Plans Garage Sale May 2-3 Beta Sigma Phi, Chapter Alpha, met recently in the home of Mrs. William Haddick, where plans were discussed for the May 2 and 3 garage sale.
