Route 120. The theft occurred Saturday, Feb. 1 between 5 and 9:30 p.m. The property in question was described as a modern art sculpture of black wrought iron. 72 inches high and weighing about 40 lbs. Anyone having seen the item or knowing of its location is asked to contact Sgt. Daniel Kinnerk at the McHenry Police department. The caller need not identify himself and all information will be kept strictly confidential. Kinnerk said. Survey Village For Mosquito Abatement Cost At the regular village board of trustee meeting, March 13, bills were presented and ap proved in the following funds: General Fund $1,041.73 and the MFT Fund $420.22. Special guests for the evening were the complete village board of the Village of Sunrise Ridge who were present to observe procedures of a municipality. Clerk Lillegard presented a proposal for mowing of the beach, village hall and ball diamond for the summer. A request was relayed to the board for Clark Outdoor Spraying Company to survey the village by means of using a helicopter. This survey would be for a proposal to the village board as to cost for mosquito abatement. Permission was granted to allow the survey and arrangements for flying the ^helicopter over the village would be arranged through the police department. Clerk Lillegard presented to the board a written report pertaining to a grant for two full time employees for the summer months. The report included justification for the manpower such as cleaning out culverts, mowing, painting, patching, etc. The only stipulation of the grant is that supervision would be necessary. The report was tabled for additional study. Ed Olbinski presented a weight limit amendment to our existing ordinance and a special meeting would be called to discuss same at greater length. The proposed new building permit fees were also discussed and returned to committee for additional information and rewriting. It was noted that Daniel Strach was sworn in as a patrolman in the police department. It was requested by a resident that possibly the bus routes could go back to the original routes inasmuch as the roads were showing wear and tear. The meeting adjourned at 9:40 p.m. JOYOUS HOUSEHOLD The household of John and Viola Etchingham is very joyous these days since the celebration of their fiftieth anniversary. Lions District Governor Will Visit Local Club The McHenry Lions club will be visited March 24 by Walter i Walt) Wilson, district governor of District 1-J, Lions International. Governor Wilson has been a devoted Lions member for eleven years, with eleven year's perfect attendance record. YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of March 26. 1925) Changes in postal rates become effective April 15. Almost every class of mailable matter is effected, post card rate doubled. A meeting was held by baseball fans of this city at the McHenry Pleasure club room Monday evening for the pur pose of talking over the holding of a Mardi Gras. Mr. and Mrs. Nick N. Freund and children and Mrs. Simon Michels of this city had a close call from serious injuries at Elgin last Wednesday evening when a Chevrolet sedan they were riding in was struck a glancing blow by a Chicago Northwestern passenger train at Elgin. Another window has been donated to St. Patrick's church by^the Doherty family in memory of James and Johanna Doherty. Three one act playlets are to be staged under the auspices of the McHenry unity of the McHenry County Home Bureau at the community high school auditorium in this city on the evening of April 16. The titles of the playlets are "The Crowning Glory", "The Neighbors" and "The Red Parasols". Mayor D.G. Wells informs us that the stand pipe is soon to be given a thorough cleaning. It has been about two years since the municipal water tower has been given a cleaning. Mrs. Mary Simon, who has been spending the winter months in Chicago, has returned to her home here and is now prepared and ready to do all kinds of paper hanging. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of March 28, 1935) The spring season opened in McHenry Saturday with Dollar Day being observed in nearly every store. Parking space in Center^ille was at a premium with both sides of the street parked solid with cars from the high school and grade school building north for a block past the four corners on Green street and also parked for considerable distance on Elm street. The Empire theatre draws many patrons from Fox Lake, and other points in Lake County who in addition to coming to see the show on Saturday night, do much of their shopping in our local stores. Harold J. Bacon of McHenry has been named cashier of the Cary State Bank by its direc tors where he will succeed E.W. Meyer. For the past ten years Harold has been with the West McHenry State Bank where he held the office of assistant cashier for the last six years. Dr. C.W. Klontz has recently had a most modern X-ray machine installed in his office and by the first of the week will be ready to take any kind of an X-ray picture of any part of the body. N.J. Justen who is receiving treatment at St. Anthony's hospital in Chicago and who has been under the care of three nurses is doing as well as can be expected and shows a slight improvement daily. According to the Elgin Courier News announcement was made in Washington, D.C., Friday of the recommendation of Ray McGee of McHenry for the office of acting postmaster. Recommendations were made by Senators Louis and Diedrich. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of April 6, 1950) Miss Otti Effers, 17, of the Wing and Fin club, Sullivan Lake and Edward Klecka, 15, were seriously injured in a car truck crash Friday evening on Route 134. The truck driver was injured also. "Seventeenth Summer", a three act modern play from the book by Maureen Daly, will be presented by the senior class April 14. It is being directed by Miss Kathleen Henn. Roger L. Wilbrandt of McHenry is among twenty-nine University of Illinois geology students and faculty members who are making a week long field trip through Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina and Illinois traveling by bus the group will study land forms, rock structures, mineral industries and economics opportunities in the southern Appalachian region and other areas. A motion picture entitled "Merchandising Goes Modern" will be shown April 14 in the American Legion Home for members and friends of the McHenry Women's club by the Jewel Tea company of Chicago. The McHenry high school band presented its annual spring concert Sunday evening in the high school auditorium. In addition to the regular band numbers featured on the program were a marimba solo by Mary Ann Bolger and a piano solo by Rosemary Doherty, both with band ac companiment and a Stephen Foster number by the brass sextet. The program was under the direction of Paul Yanda. Mrs. Fred Bever and son of Chicago spent the weekend at their McCullom Lake cottage. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of April 1, 1965) Lynn Krebs, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Warren C. Krebs of McHenry, has been selected to represent the McHenry American Legion Auxiliary Unit 491 at Girl State. This year's session will be held at M a c M u r r a y c o l l e g e , Jacksonville, June 15 to 22, with enrollment of ap proximately 500. The project is for the purpose of providing citizenship training for Illinois Girls who are members pf the Junior high school class. More old Plaindealer copies are turning up. Carol Justen, daughter of Mrs. Helen Justen, has told of looking through some papers in the family safe and coming upon issues dated 1903 and 1905. Mr. and Mrs. Richard Doherty are the proud parents of a son born March 30 in the McHenry hospital. After two hours of dicussion on the best location for the proposed new high school in District 156 members of that school board voted 4 to 3 on the Boone Valley development site. M died at the Villa Rest Home at Pistakee Bay March 25 at the age of 86 years. Leo C. Thompson of Kane avenue, McHenry, marked his thirty-fifth anniversary with the Commonwealth Edison Public Service company system on March 30. Thompson is an engineering assistant at the company's Crystal Lake office. Mr. and Mrs. Barney Graff, who were among the earliest families to make their home in McCullom Lake on a per manent basis, will celebrate their golden anniversary in Florida April 8. He received instruction in working at shore stations, aboard ships and in aircraft producing photography used in Naval intelligence, operations and public affairs efforts. A 1968 graduate of McHenry high school, he is scheduled to report to Fleet Air West Pac, Cubi Point, Philippines. Private Michael F. Clark, son of Mr. and Mrs. Francis D. Clark, 4701 Bowner drive, McHenry, received a Parachutist badge marking his successful completion of the airborne course at the Army Infantry school at Fort Ben- ning, Ga. He underwent a rigorous physical training program, then tested his ability by jumping from 34-foot and 250-foot towers. The final week he was required to make five actual jumps.
