The last of the seventeen are expected prior to the start of the fall term next September. Several features mark the new buses as safe and comfortable for the thousands who ride them. One of these is thermopane windows in the driver's compartment and in the rear to eliminate frosting. Another is heavy duty brakes, and oversize booster tanks. A 60-gallon gasoline tank assures trips as far as Milwaukee or Chicago without the necessity for a refill. This problem confronted drivers a year ago during the gasoline shortage, when many stations were closed. An oversize alternator, together with a dual battery hookup to the alternator system, is expected to eliminate difficulty in starting buses in extremely cold weather. Seats in all of the buses are padded, and each is equipped with an AM radio. Ill III II! Carl Ames, transportation director for School Districts 15 and 156, stands beside new buses with five drivers, Lynn Hammerstein, Bonnie Mazzone, Sue Wiese, Gertrude Zuber and Irene Weiss. In the lower picture, Ms. Wiese is shown in the driver's seat viewing new control panel.
