Mrs. Alvary graduated from Vassar college with a Bachelor's degree and she has done graduate work at Roosevelt university. She founded the Junior Great Books program in McHenry county and led Great Books programs in four schools and two libraries. She also has served as past president of the League of Women Voters. He has served on the school Citizens Advisory committee - Long Range planning, since its inception in May 1974. His civic affiliations include serving as past president of the Chamber of Commerce, member of the City Plan commission and president of McHenry Rotary club. Major School Problems "The Northeastern Illinois Planning commission (NIPC) predicts that our area is destined to have a tremendous growth rate in the next few years. We must plan for this influx, both from the building facilities standpoint and from the type of education being offered the young people. We must find ways to make our present facilities more productive and profitable so as to maintain a tax rate which is reasonable. Not only must we provide a sound, fundamental education for all, but we must also see that our educational experiences provide students with saleable skills and vocational training to meet the growing competition for jobs in our area." Ideas For Meeting Problems "We must study and evaluate problems as they arise, and I am willing to give the time to study each one as it comes up, so that I can make some contribution to the board. This should be expected of all board members by both the parents and business community, as well as the students in our schools." JOANNE HIGGINS Joanne Higgins of 4315 E. Lake Shore drive, Wonder Lake, is one of the candidates seeking a three-year-term on the high school board. She has been serving on that board since last summer when she was appointed to fill the unexpired term of Howard Weiss. Mrs. Higgins and her husband have lived in the area for the past nineteen years. They have two sons attending the University of Illinois at Champaign, three daughters in McHenry high school and one daughter attending Harrison elementary school, Wonder Lake. Mrs. Higgins graduated from Loyola university and has done graduate work at Northwestern, Northern Illinois and the University of Illinois. She has done substitute teaching in the district and has been a CCD teacher in Christ the King church for nine years. BARBARA A, STANELL Barbara A. Stanell of 1318 Old Bay road, McHenry, is seeking reelection to the board of Johnsburg School District 12. A 9-year resident of this area, she is a high school graduate and attended nursing school for three years. Her experience relating to schools includes a three-year term on the Johnsburg board and one and a half years on the Executive board of SEDOM. He has taught at McHenry Junior college and as a journalist, and has covered and written numerous stories about education over the years. Weidner and his wife are the parents of seven children from 10 to 24 years of age. The incumbent has served on the college board since 1971 and has held the position of secretary of the board for the past two years. He is a member of the Harvard Chamber of Commerce, McHenry County Farm Bureau, Knights of Columbus, Harvard Moose lodge and various other farm and civic organizations. COMMENTS "Over three years after the successful referendum to build the permanent campus, many of the problems have been overcome and work is progressing on the new building. In the past few weeks, due to my insistence, we have been successful in getting the target date for completion of the Applied Science building moved up to Sept. 1, 1975. By moving the Vo-Tech department out to trie new campus this fall, added room will be made available at the IIT building which the college needs so badly. "I believe I can help the college satisfactorily complete its building program by using a common sense approach to the various problems that come up from time to time. "As a result of the recent referendum for the MCC education fund, the college will be able to maintain all programs as needed. If the state apportionment should raise sufficiently it is quite possible that the college will not have to levy the full amount that is now possible." WILLIAM T. RYAN William T. Ryan has announced his candidacy for trustee of McHenry County college. He has been a resident of Crystal Lake for ten years where he and his wife live with their four children. Ryan has been a practicing general dentist in Crystal Lake for eleven years. Prior to that, he served two years in the United States Air force, one of those years as Chief of Dental Services. He attended schools in the LaSalle-Peru-Oglesby area and earned Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois, where he was a graduate teaching assistant. Gealow also attended George Washington university Law school and received a Juris Doctorate degree. He has attended graduate business school at Bridgeport university and Indiana university and has completed many graduate courses in accounting, marketing, economics and industrial relations. He is employed as an attorney by the McGraw-Edison company, Elgin. The candidate is a member and appointed officer of McHenry Lodge, No. 158 A.F,& A.M., and is a member and elder of Faith Presbyterian church. Major School Problems: "Recognizing the present state of the economy in formulating the budget for District 15 and in approving both fees and expenditures. In the ever increasing rate of evolution in educational systems and methods, the school board must accept and exercise its responsibility in evaluating changes in present programs and new programs proposed by the administration as to implement only those which appear to have the greatest likelihood of improving the quality of education." Ideas for Meeting Problems: "The board should recognize that while many are on fixed incomes in this inflationary period, even worse, the income of many has been greatly reduced over the last several months. The board should take this into account in formulating its budget for next year and in approving both fees for students and expenditures at this time. While normally one of the two board meetings a month is an educational meeting wherein the administration informs the board of proposed new and changed programs, the board must, itself, accept responsibility for choosing the right programs for McHenry." Woodlawn Park avenue, McHenry, is seeking a three-year term on the board of grade school District 15. Mr. Lockwood is a 1965 graduate of MCHS and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a BA degree from Iowa Wesleyan college. He studied one year at Albert-Ludwig university in West Germany and is presently attending Northwestern University School of Law. He will begin working for a Chicago law firm in June. Mr. Lockwood is a member of the Illinois State Bar association and of the Hilltop Parent-Teacher organization. He and his wife, Cheryl Lynn, have two daughters, Jennifer and Cynthia, and a son, Lee. Major School Problems "Perhaps the most important problem facing the schools today is the conflict between traditional methods and the newer reform methods. Throughout the last decade, reformers, bolstered by a surge of public interest in education, have made numerous innovations in the public school system. Some of these have made sense and others have been confusing and even disturbing. There has been growing unrest in the community by some concerned parents and other interested persons over certain aspects of these programs. I believe the school board of District 15 has the responsiblity to respond to these concerns by justifying its educational policies." Ideas For Meeting Problems "There is but one sound educational policy - to give our children the best possible education. If a new policy is better than an old one, I am in favor of it. But I do not believe in experimenting with our children simply for the sake of experimentation. Innovative programs are silly if they cannot be shown to be more effective than the programs they replace. I feel the reforms initiated in the McHenry school system may suffer from this innovative silliness. In support of this, many educators have recently begun to question the adequacy of the open classroom concept and Dr. William Glasser's program. There seems to me to be indications that the reforms which have been instituted in the McHenry schools may be more harmful than helpful." rate. "My reasoning is based on several recently acquired facts, one being that the college will receive some $28,000 due to the county- wide increase in assessed evaluation. Additional funding is forthcoming because of the probably 4,000 additional credit hours (just under 12 per cent increase over last semester). This means that with the state aid of $20 per credit hour and tuition of $15 per credit hour, MCC will receive another $140,000.
