PAGE 6 - PLAINDEALER-WEDNESDAY, APRIL 9, 1975 1 Crystal Lake Moose Sponsor Wrestling Match, April 10th EARL WALSH' So I Hear ^ SPORTS EDITOR., Nice to hear from friends from afar this week. Now^read this-- a message on a card from Upland, California: Saturday - March 29 - Upland, California. r Howdy: - Weenjoyed a most marvelous day at Lawrence Welk's Country Club Village. Had a fine meal in this restaurant at noon with recorded champagne music in the background. Hope some day you can visit this place after you retire on May 1st. Keep a song in your heart. Clarence & Ann Stowell Elvera & Alex Justen We had sent him a couple of Chicago Tribune clippings about the snow in Tucson, but received the retort, "you, above all people, would be expected to know that you can't believe what you read in the papers these days." Then, there is reference to how different it was in the good old days when he was a sports reporter. Huh! (How well we remember "Bacon's Strip".) Some beautiful pictures were enclosed. Narry a snow flake in sight. "Zeke" still thinks the * Ann Stowell is the former Cleveland Indians are great. Anna Popp who grew up in (That's from being out in the McHenry. sun without a sun bonnet.) Lawrence Welk's restaurant is pictured on the card. Looks Very inviting. * A paper napkin and box of •Welk matches was carefully wrapped and sent to us. Must Save those matches for special occasions. Understand Arnold Rauen, Senior Citizen and Lawrence 'Welk faithful, also received a "Card. > Had a call from our Girl ^Friday, Marie, telling us a •letter came in from "Zeke" .'feacon-- and. it had 20 cents postage on it'" and maybe we • should come and get it. Lest we forget, he has taken up tennis after 40 years and challenges Adele (Our Brenda) to a match. Put your money on Brenda. With big league baseball opening this week, there aren't any glowing reports about the Chicago teams. If the Cubs are an unhappy family now, as reported ex tensively, what will they be before the season comes to an end? Reporters say there are too many "ifs" in the Sox picture. Time will tell. Lack of pitching indicates that the Sox will be coming in with some wings and a prayer. What the heck are they talking about. They have pit chers. Just give them work instead of giving the ball to Wilbur Wood so often with only- two days rest. TAKING WAYS--- t Just read • an article that reports one of every three guests occupying a room at an American hotel or motel takes part of it with him when he leaves, and the value of the items he steals is now- estimated to be about $500 million a year. Tidy little sum! Guess a couple of recent columns were short and Dick Wimmer wants to know why. Just giving our readers a rest, Dick. Dick Rabbitt handed in his copy this week with a notation: "Rub that blarney stone and get us some good weather. What a spring for athletics." OK, Dick, hang in there. We are on the hot line to the weatherman. The Crystal Lake Moose will sponsor a Wrestling Match April 10th in the Crystal Lake High School. Without (question, one of the greatest pro-mat stars in the world today is Wilbur Snyder, one of only 5 men that has defeated the current A.W.A. World champion Vern Gagne. But Snyder never has met the vicious Ox in a one-on-one competition and The Ox is certainly not one to use science in a wrestling bout. Ox is one of the rising young stars in pro- wrestling, already sporting a victory over Dick the Bruiser in the Intl. Amphitheatre last February 22nd. "No doubt about it." savs promoter Bob Luce, mat chmaker for the show," The Ox is rough and tough and Snyder is going to be hard-pressed to come up with a win!" The Ox is trying to get in the No. 1 challenger position to meet Vern Gagne and a victory over Snyder, one man who has defeated Gagne, would be a very impressive win to say the least. A terrific tag-team match on the card pits the Legionnaires, Pvt. Don Fargo and Sgt. Jock Goulet against the great team of Yukon Moose Cholak and Lou Thesz. This will mark the first appearance in this area of the former NWA World Champion, Thesz, and many fans will surely remember this legend. Warriors Still Awating Spring Season Opener By Dick Rabbitt The McHenry High Warriors of Coach Ken Swanson are still waiting for their opening game. With the snowstorm of last week, six games have already been cancelled and the outlook for this week is not too bright. Athletic Director Bill I Blankenhorn will be a busy fellow, trying to reschedule these games if at all possible. All we can hope for is some nice sunshine to melt the snow, and hopefully the season will get under way. There is a possibility that Coach Wally Scott's thinclads will move their meet scheduled for tomorrow, to Crystal Lake. The Tigers have an all weather track. The Warriors will face Woodstock and Crystal Lake in a triangular meet. The tennis team will be trying to get in some matches this week, if the weather cooperates. smr KEN SWANSON Ken Swanson is the head baseball coach and assistant football coach at McHenry High School. He and his wife Marti have three children, Kick, Gary and Laurie. His home town is Evergreen Park, Illinois. Ken attended Illinois Wesleyan University where he played football all four years. He had done additional work at Northern Illinois University, and Azuzua Pacific College, s In his 19 y^ars of coaching, the "big fellow" has coached football, basketball, wrestling, swimming, track, baseball and tennis. He is also one of the top rated basketball officials in Northern Illinois, and is frequently called upon to of ficiate the top high school games in the suburban area. Stock Car Racing Waukegan, Illinois - The 26th season of stock car racing will roar off the line Saturday night April 12th at the Waukegan Speedway. Late model and hobby stock cars will be featured in the program which begins at 8:00 p.m. After a one week delay due to spring snows and cold weather, the one-quarter mile paved facility is expecting most of the top late model drivers in the Chicagoland area to be on hand for the opening night. Practice will start at 5:00 p.m. Following the 1974 season, the turns were repaved at the popular Waukegan oval in anticipation of the 1975 cam paign. With the smoother surface now in place, track records may fall in the early competition.
