SUPPLEMENT TO McHENRY PLAIN DEALER-PAGE 10-FRIDAY, APRIL 18, 1975 Why You Should Paint With Quality Rollers and Brushes Daint can be one of the most inexpensive of all decorating products. Almost any room can take on a new magic color at a low. 1o* cost. It isn't necessary to change the furniture. fabrics or 0oor coverings. And a meaningful decorating tour de force can be achieved with only a minimum of physical ef fort. BUT., and this is a big but... even the highest quality paint will result in a disappointing ap plication if cheap, poor quality rollers and brushes are used. Ex treme "peaks and val'evs" will be apparent, for example, after using pool quality roller covers. The peaks will have adequate film thickness to hide, but the valleys will be thin and allow any background color to show through. Furthermore, there is a popular belief that darker colors will hide better than light colors. This is not necessarily true. The degree of hiding is due largely to the white hiding pigments which are in the bases used to tint deep colors. Deep color bases have far less white hiding pigment than pastel and medium tone bases. Also, colors which are bright and clean are often more transparent and hide less than the grayed or "mud dy" colors There are a few im portant other steps In pioneer days, good neighbors helped rebuild when a home was de stroyed. Today, a State Farm Homeowners Policy I INFLATION COVERAGE applies that same "good neighbor" principle to home insurance. Measure the square feet covered per gallon. Refer to the recom mended spreading rate listed on the label, making allowances if the type of surface is smooth or porous. There is always a tendency to use too little paint. 2. A radical color change may require a prime coat, tinted to wards the finish color. A white or off white background may be more difficult to hide than a dark-colored surface. 3. If the underlying surface is too porous, the paint will penetrate. carrying the hiding power and color with it. Here again, priming may be necessary. 4. The applicator manufacturer's recomm endation for roller type, nap size, etc. should be followed closely. Poor quality or wrong type will not provide a uniform and proper film thickness. 5. Be cautious with thinners. Excessive thin ning will spread the paint over too much surface, thus reducing the hiding. Recommended thinning quantities are listed on labels. 6. Take time to mix the paint properly. Settled pigment on the bottom of the container is a loss to the potential hiding power. Shake or stir thoroughly before ap plication. 7. Before repainting any surface, make sure that all cracks are carefully filled, then smoothed level with the surface. Small hairline cracks can be filled with spackling material. Large cracks often need to be filled with patching plaster. With every product, there is always an adequate set of direc tions. Follow them for satisfactory finished jobs. One of the better sour ces in all 50 states for paint information and assistance are Fuller- O B r i e n d e a l e r s , designated by their com pany as "Paint Pro Shops," because of their e x p e r i e n c e a n d knowledgeability of products, applications, uses and techniques. This inorganic material is neutral in reaction and it can be applied at any time of year without danger of burning grass; yet it neutralizes harmful effects of alkali salt from snow-melting chemicals or dog damage. Gypsum also breaks up com pacted clay soil so that air and moisture can move more freely and roots can grow normally.
