"Oh - is that you, Earl? 1 must have the wrong number." As we recognized Junior Freund's voice, we answered, "Like h-- you called the wrong number." * We hadn't had a call from Junior in so long that we thought he moved away to a different climate. But, now his beloved Cubs are winning (and a Sox need pulling up) so he learned how to use the phone all over again. Judge Herrmann brought us two Sox schedules. Thought it was real nice of him until he said, "I won't have any use for them." Jim Curran phoned, after talking it over with Sib Whiting, to find out if we were watching channel 9. Told him we didn't have that station on our TV. So he has promised to take up a collection to get us a set that has channel 9. And no other station! Somehow we get the feeling that Cub games must be on 9. Right now those Cub fans are on Cloud 9. Our Sox are having a tough time getting things together and the sports writers are on Manager Chuck Tanner's back. Now comes our friend Mona to cheer us up a bit. She sent us a Falstaff White Sox mug that should make even milk taste better. Mona also sent a pack of old clippings that should fit into our scrap book. There is a 3-dollar bill for Sox fans who gave up. And team pictures of both the Cubs and Sox from the year 1966. Thanks, Mona. Glad to know that you are still "with 'em." Local athletes stood out as the Marian Central track teapn finished third in a three-team meet at Crystal Lake with 105 points, Cary-Grove second with 49 and Marian third with 20. McHenry's Gary Gilpin was a standout for Marian, winning the shot put and the discus competition. In the shot put, he had a toss of 53'2", while in the discus he had a 130'5". Chuck Martina of McHenry finished second in the discus with a 121*11" and fourth in the shot put with a 40'7". Dan Knox of McHenry finished third in the low hurdles with a :47.2 and John Dwyer took fourth in the pole vault with lO'O". The Marian mile relay team of Dwyer, Knox, Martina, and Larry Sullivan of Wonder Lake finished second. We have information on the fourth annual basketball camp to be held at North Park College. Glad to give it to anybody interested. Anybody know if Hank Marino is still alive--and did he write a book on bowling. Fred Hartel of Whispering Oaks would like to know. DEFINITION OF A WAITRESS A waitress is a woman made up of the usual chemical compounds ordained by "nature. But she must have a per sonality and many virtues that the average woman does not possess: She must have the diplomacy of a Winston Churchill The social grace of an Emily Post The speed of a Banshee jet The smile of a Greek goddess The patience of Job The memory of an elephant The thick skin of a rhinoceros The strength of an Atlas The staying power of a mother-in-law The condition of a professional football lineman The grooming of a duchess And the speaking voice of a debutante And, last but not least, she must have a love of humanity. For humans show their worst side when they are hungry. When she is gracious to her guests as well as to her associates, she has mastered the art of serving the public. --Author Unknown-- McHenry Netters Win Rockford Quadrangular By Dick Rabbitt McHenry's tennis squad captured championships in five of the six singles classifications and won second place in the remaining contest in the Rock- ford Jefferson quadrangular rheet last Saturday at Rock- ford.
