Creighton of 8515 Dorr road, Wonder Lake, was pinned in her car for a period of time after it was hit by another vehicle and crashed into a utility pole. The accident took place Friday morning about 10:45 at the corner of Route 120 and Ringwood-Draper road. The McHenry Rescue squad was called to extricate her from the car. Ms. Creighton was taken to McHenry hospital, where she was reported in satisfactory condition by hospital authorities Monday morning. Driver of the other car, Russell A. Regner of 3013 S. Pool street, Griswold Lake, McHenry, was charged with failure to yield at a stop or yield intersection. According to Sheriff's police, Ms. Creighton was east-bound on the highway when the Regner car pulled away from the intersection and hit the side of Ms. Creighton's auto. The force of the collision caused the Creighton car to leave the road/ STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Acom Acres Home Of Speed Horses PART II THE STANDARDBREED From the time that man invented the wheel and domesticated the horse the driving of horses has been going on. After it was proven that a horse hitched to a cart could be driven from point A to point B with relative safety the only factor that remained constant until this day was who could get there faster. Horse racing was one of the earliest sports practiced in America. The first trotting races were under saddle. Of ficial records show that a gelding by the name of Yankee was the first horse who trotted a mile in two minutes and fifty- nine seconds, the year was 1806. In 1845 the beautiful grey trotting mare Lady Suffolk was the first World's Champion- Trotter to be raced regularly to a sulky. The rage was on. Until horses disappeared from everyday use styllish roadsters flashed over the roads to the delight of their owners who liked nothing better than to test each others speed. For a time the Morgan horse was king of the road, but before long a grandson of the imported Thoroughbred stallion Messenger, the immortal Hambletonian 10, would begin to create a new breed of speed horse including trotters and pacers. When Hanbletenian was bred to the great roadster mares of his day the stage was set for harness horses to steadily cover a mile in less and less time, until today the fastest trotters and pacers clock times well under two minutes. The pedigree of every fast-record harness horse in America today carries some crosses to Hambletonian 10. The harness races held every year at County Fairs all over the country are one of the last bastions of true Americana. Our own Harvard track has been active sinc<? the turn of the century. Dr. Gordon Iverson is well known as one of our local veterinarians. He is also a breeder of Standardbred horses. The horses he breeds are from bloodlines that produce a natural inclination to pace, which is helped along when the horses are trained and raced by the use of hobbles. The hobbles serve to steady a horse in motion and aid in maintaining a consistant gait. Dr. Iverson's farm Acorn Acres serves as a kind of speed nursery and experimental station. New types of feed, wormers, and other horse related products are tried out on his horses before Doc recommends them for general use. At present Dr. Iverson is doing some experimental work in feeding silage to horses. He feels that in carefully controled portions silage may benefit horses and help cut feed costs. In the racing department the senior breeding stallion is Newport. Newport is a son of Adios who has been call the most influential Standardbred sire of modern times. (To Be Continued) The El Camino Real, or King's Highway, running from San Francisco to San Diego, was built on the old route connecting the early missions. Seventy Five in Seventy Five MONZA MIA!
