The Varsity is suffering from a lack of depth especially in the distance events while the Fresh-Soph have been consistent in all events. McHenry's Gary Gilpin has been a stand out in early season meets as he has a distance of 53 feet 2 inches to his credit in the shot put and 132 feet 1012 inches in the discus. He will be defending his championships this Saturday at the Crystal Lake Invitational. Chuck Martina of McHenry has added depth to the weights as he has posted distances of 43 feet 6 inches in the shot and 123 feet 4 inches in the discus. Mark Saladin of Woodstock saw his first action of the year in last Saturday's Bishop O'Neill Relays and the speedy junior ran a 10.7 in the 100 and long jumped 19 feet 9 inches. Other Marian Varsity members who have been consistent point getters have been Dan Knox of McHenry in the low hurdles and triple jump; Craig Adams of McHenry in the 440; John Dwyer of Woodstock in pole vault; Pat Cristy of Wonder Lake in the 880 and Larry Sullivan of Wonder Lake in the pole vault and 440. The Fresh-Soph have been led by sprinter Scott Rinn of Woodstock who has posted times of 10.8 in th? 100 and 24.8 in the 220. Jim Bennett of Crystal Lake has not been defeated in the shot this year. He has a 43 foot effort in the shot and has tossed the discus 131 feet 7 inches. Tony Balchunas of McHenry has also looked good in the weights as he has efforts of 41 feet and 121 feet in the shot and discus . MCHS Varsity Tennis Squad Defeats Stevenson Through those years we have kept our own political and business life detached from this column. Now, perhaps we will feel free to make comments that didn't seem fair before. But, let us not forget that this column is a give and take space where the spirit of fun prevails. Believe it or not, by actual count we have had six requests to serve on different com mittees since our retirement was announced. That isn't what we had in mind. We want younger people to take active parts in varjous civic programs while we set our own pace. •This year we will hit the 40 year mark as Plaindealer Sports Editor. You will note that the sports page has frequently spread into two pages. Hopefully we can strive toward higher goals in giving you sports reports. This is truly a sports minded community. For several years, we have not had time to take in af ternoon sports events. Now we plan to get around. Our schools have plenty of action going. You may be sure we will take in some White Sox games. May even go to see those Cubs! McHenry's varsity tennis team defeated once beaten Stevenson last week by the score of 4 to 1. The Warriors were paced by Greg Worm and Terry Reilly in singles, and Kenne Ludwig, Randy Blankenhorn, Craig Smith, and Jeff Boyer in doubles. Joe Johnson lost the No. 1 singles spot, but has been showing improvement since making the change from doubles. Singles * No. 1 Heiser of Stevenson defeated Johnson 6-2, 6-2. ' No. 2 Worm defeated Allen 6- 2, 6-1. No. 3 Reilly defeated Behrens 7-5, 6-4. Doubles No. 1 Ludwig and Blankenhorn defeated Pierson and Kaiser 6-3, 6-2. Thinclads Win Triangular Over ZeeBees and Lake Forest By Dick Rabbitt Coach Wally Scott's McHenry high trackmen ran their way to a triangular win over Zion Benton and Lake Forest at McCracken field on Tuesday evening. The Warriors scored 75 points to 56* 2 for Lake Forest and Zion had 48> 2. Brian Nuss was the Warriors only double winner, as he won the 330 yd low hurdles and long jump. Tomorrow the Warriors travel to Woodstock to par ticipate in the Woodstock Relays. The sophs defeated Lake So, a big change has taken place for us. Admittedly, we have mixed emotions about it.
