w The Sidelines - .Tw nex!few ^ys wil1 be busy times for McHenry High athletes. On Saturday Coach Walt Scott will take his thinclads to Libertyville for the North Suburban Conference Meet. Coach Gary Gray will have his tennis squad at North Chicago for the District Meet. The Warrior baseball team will be engaged in the District at McCracken Field, and the Girls track team will be in the District at Rolling Meadows. And not to be outdone the McHenry County Varsity and Sophomore track meet will be held at McCracken Field on diS5'S? be?inninS at 3:00 P.M. Finals will begin at 6:30 P.M. There is no admission, so a good crowd is expected to see the Warriors defend the title they won last year at Crystal Lake. The conference meet at Libertyville begins at 10:00 A.M.with the finals starting at 1:00 P.M. Anyone of four teams could come off with the big trophy on Saturday. Our Warriors will have to be given serious consideration. If everyone is hale and hearty, I look for Wally Scott's boys* to bring home the bacon to McHenry for the first time ever in the North Suburban. Zion Benton is also a threat. They have sprinters galore, but can be had in the field events. Libertyvilleis strong in the field events, but have a clink in the armour in other events. North Chicago has one of the best hurdlers in the state in Nate Lundy. But likewise they are weak in other events. Lake Forest has two .line distance runners, but you can't win a big meet in only two events. Crystal Lake is a bit down this season, but you can never count the Tigers out. It wasn't too many years ago when Warriors coaches were wondering if the team would score a point in the conference meet, now here we are talking about a championship. How times do change for the better. Coach Gary Gray's tennis squad is in for a bit of competition. With Lake Forest and Libertyville, plus Waukegan and Highland Park you can see the caliber of competition for the local lads. How can you compete with teams that have an indoor program the year around. Or for that matter where professionals are at your call at the clubs that some of the young players parents have access to. Ken Swanson's baseball Warriors are a definite threat to capture the District meet here. A heavy favorite over Richmond yesterday, the Warriors should advance to the second game against Woodstock, who drew a bye. That game will be played around noon tomorrow. The winner will play the winner of the Marian Central-Hebron game on Monday for the championship. The Streaks in the past have proved troublesome, as they won the District the past four years. But I'm picking the Warriors to advance to the Elgin Regional next week. The girls will take part in the Rolling Meadows District meet on Saturday. This will be a new experience for the gals, and although the competition will be stiff, it will be good for the gals to meet some of the larger schools in the suburban area. Something new has been added to the County Meet. Both the Varsity and Frosh-Soph will be run on the same day. This will be a definite handicap to schools like Marengo and Marian Central, who in the past have had small squads. Now the coaches of the larger schools will have to make some decisions. That is whether to run a boy who is a frosh or soph on the varsity level, or to keep him in his own class. It should be interesting to see how the coaches react to these decisions and what the future will hold in store. Maybe the county should have a two class system. Hardly ever does Richmond, Hebron or Huntley send a representative to the county meet. Next Friday night the Warriors are in the Rockford Boylan District. With the addition of new schools, and the breaking up into Class AA and A, the Warriors were routed West, which is a break. Again it is hard to compete against schools who have had indoor programs, and by going to Rockford, the Warriors will be at least even with the other schools in terms of facilities. When Foolish Pleasure streaked across the finish line to win the 1975 Kentucky Derby the world was watching. Foolish Pleasure and all the other fine horses in that race were doing a job they were bred for. Over 300 years of selective breeding has created the sleek, energetic Thoroughbred. The history of the Thoroughbred begins in England more than 300 years ago. At that time Englishmen wanted a horse as tall as their draft horses, a horse that had speed, agility and stamina. From the time of the first crusades the speed and endurance of the 'desert horse' had been known and respected. As a result Englishmen began to import Arabian, Turk, and Barb stallions from the Near East and North Africa to breed to their English mares. The greatest number of imported stallions were brought over to England during the 17th and 18th centuries. When these stallions, and their sons and grandsons were bred to English mares the British found they had developed a better horse than they had ever had before. When the breed was well established the infusion of imported blood was stopped and every effort was made to McHENRY COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL 1974-75 Spring Sports Schedule Codes: BaB - Baseball Te - Tennis Tr Track G Tr - Girls Track SB - Girls Softball Bdn - Badminton V - Varsity S - Sophomore F - Freshmen F-S - Frosh-Soph. * - Two Busses - One from each school Bus Leaves Date Soort Sauad Opponent Place Time East West Fri.
