FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 14, 1925) The eighth grade com­ mencement exercises, owing to the measles epidemic, will be cancelled this year. McHenry's new fire siren was given a tryout on Tuesday afternoon and while everything appeared to work quite satisfactorily, city officials are of the opinion that the volume could have been a little stronger. A few minor changes have been made. Another test will be made next Saturday. The wiring and installation of the system connected with the siren was done by Carey Electric company of this city. Colby's riding academy will open the season next Saturday. All of the horses and equipment are in excellent condition. The stables are located on the Colby farm a short distance west of the city. McHenry's first paving will be laid Friday morning when the big mixer starts work at the foot of Main street. According to Mr. McGucken, it will require about ten days to pave the entire length of Main street to the CNWRR right-of-way and also one block on Front street. George Kamholz of this city and Miss Helen Sauer 0f Chicago were united in marriage at the home of the bride's parents in Chicago on May 13. Arlyne Mae Gibbs, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Gibbs, was born in Ringwood Oct. 29, 1913, and died in her home in West McHenry on May 4, 1925, after a week's illness. Measles signs are quite common throughout the city at this time. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 16, 1935) G.A. Lipfert of Chicago has taken over the management of the Lily Lake Casino formerly operated by Fred Holly. Thirty tables of cards and bunco were in play at the benefit party for the Boy Scouts held at the bridge ballroom. Proceeds from the party will make up the fund to pay the expenses of sending a Boy Scout to the National Jamboree at Washington, D C. in August. A number of prospective college students have in­ terviewed Supt. C.H. Duker regarding the new college course which will be taken up by the local high school if enough students are interested. This wonderful opportunity for a college education will be available at the high school if enough respond to make the plan practical. The Boy Scouts enjoyed an overnight camp in Regner's woods at Pistakee Bay Friday night. This was a new place for the boys who were enthusiastic over the location as well as over the fine new Ford truck provided by Buss-Page Motor Sales to convey the boys to their camp site. Miss Mary Carey and daughters, Florence and Evelyn, arrived home after spending the winter at Miami, Fla. Matt Freund has opened a jewelry shop in the Peter H. Freund plumbing store where he has half of the large front window for his stock of jewelry. He is also a school teacher teaching an eight months' term at the Lily Lake school. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 25, 1950) Mr. and Mrs. P.M. Berger recently left Oklahoma City following his retirement and have moved into the home of his father, R. Berger, 96 years old at Pistakee Bay. The younger Mr. Berger has been away from McHenry for twenty-five years. McHenry will again be the scene of a colorful parade on Memorial Day in honor of the men who fought and died in past wars to preserve democracy in our country. Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Bohr have moved from Center street to their new home in Arlington Heights. Miss Nadyne Lewis, student nurse at St. Therese hospital, Waukegan, spent the weekend in McHenry with her parents. Old friends of Herman Sherbert, a former resident of McHenry where he was telegraph operator at the Northwestern depot, learned last week of his death which occurred in May wood. Sixteen ladies, all members of the McCullom Lake Red Cross first aid class will graduate May 26, at the beach house. Mrs. Gertrude Makofske organized the class. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 20, 1965) At the meeting of the board of School District 156, Supt. Carl Buckner reported to members that 102 students had signed up for behind-the-wheel driver training , instruction this summer. Mrs. Margaret R. Franklin of Lakeland Park, escaped with ntinor head injuries Thursday afternoon when her car collided with a Northwestern train at the Waukegan road crossing. With the deadline for entries in the 1965 Fiesta day queen contest Monday of this week, there were eighteen pretty candidates. Joseph J. Muska of Waukegan road, McHenry, died May 15 after an illness of about a year. Saturday, May 1, was the day selected by Miss Elaine Marie Michels and Mr. Kenneth D. Tcwnsend for their wedding which was performed at St. John the Baptist Catholic church, Johnsburg. A retirement dinner in honor of Miss Julia Feffer of Crystal Lake will be held May 27 at Martinetti's. Miss Feffer will complete forty-one years as a teacher and principal of Prairie Grove school and retire at the close of this term. Mr. and Mrs. Burton N. French of McCullom Lake celebrated their golden wed­ ding anniversary Saturday, May 8, at the Legion home.
